Modelling workflows and collaboration in virtual supply chains with nested modular Petri nets

Virtual supply chains (VSCs) focus on the development of supply chain network infrastructure in relation to the multitude of product offerings. Recognising the importance of VSCs in pursuing a global manufacturing strategy, many researchers have dedicated themselves to developing VSC models. However, existing VSC modelling formalisms are inadequate to capture the multiple workflows, thus enabling collaboration among supply chain partners. In response to the importance of VSC model development and the limitations of existing VSC models, this study proposes a modelling framework and a new formalism of nested modular Petri nets (NMPNs) to model workflows and collaboration among partners for VSC management. In the framework, an ontology-based semantic model is developed to capture the constituent elements and their relationships. In the NMPN formalism, a number of basic modules are developed as building blocks to design complex supply chains. The behaviours of the supply chain partners and the VSC as a whole are further analysed using various PN analysis techniques. An industrial case of the electric motors is reported to demonstrate the application of the NMPN formalism to develop VSC. It is concluded that the NMPN model facilitates information exchange and collaboration among supply chain partners.

Abstract High-level Petri nets have been used to model systems in a variety of application domains, ranging from protocols to logistics. This paper addresses an application domain which is receiving more and more attention: workflows in offices and their management. High-level Petri nets are used to model (1) the workflow in an office environment and (2) the workflow management system to support the control of office work. Over the last decade there has been a shift from "data-aware" information systems to "process-aware" information systems. To support business processes an enterprise information system needs to be aware of these processes and their organizational context. Business Process Management (BPM) includes methods, techniques, and tools to support the design, enactment, management, and analysis of such operational business processes. BPM can be considered as an extension of classical Workflow Management (WFM) systems and approaches. This tutorial introduces models, systems, and standards for the design, analysis, and enactment of workflow processes. Petri nets are used for the modeling and analysis of workflows. Using Petri nets as a formal basis, contemporary systems, languages, and standards for BPM and WFM are discussed. Although it is clear that Petri nets can serve as a solid foundation for BPM/WFM technology, in reality systems, languages, and standards are developed in an ad-hoc fashion. To illustrate this XPDL, the "Lingua Franca" proposed by the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), is analyzed using a set of 20 basic workflow patterns. This analysis exposes some of the typical semantic problems restricting the application of BPM/WFM technology.

Modeling and simulation of workflow processes using multi-level petri nets

A method for modeling workflow processes using a Petri net based multilevel formalism is proposed, which yields modular and hierarchical descriptions of the organization, the processes, resource management, and user interactions. The models allow the synthesis of agent based software in which mobile agents guide the cases through the organization units; the software can be interactively executed for simulation purposes or distributed within a computer network for implementing a workflow management system. A tool for editing and simulating the models is presented.
