Internet Addiction and Loneliness Among Students of University of Shkodra

Internet addiction is a kind of consumer behavior that has attracted the attention of many studies. Loneliness is a frequently reported mental illness addicted to the internet. Lonely individuals may be drawn online because of the increased potential for companionship, the changed social interaction patterns online, and as a way to modulate negative moods associated with loneliness. This study examines the relationship between internet addiction and loneliness among albanian students of University of Shkodra and the gender differences to this aspect. The participants to the research were 151 students from 18-23 years old, who live in different places of North Albania. In order to trace the connection between loneliness and Internet addiction among students was used the self-administered questionnaires: Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and UCLA Loneliness Scale. The research has shown that there is a mild negative correlation between loneliness and Internet addiction, on the other hand no gender differences was found in terms of internet addiction and loneliness level. The results suggest that students addicted to the Internet have significantly lower rates of loneliness.

INTERNET ADDICTION AND ANXIETY AMONG STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY OF TIRANA

There is no question that 21st-century youth has become far more dependent upon connectivity for studying, playing, communicating, and socializing. Scientific studies have found that excessive use of internet is related to a variety of negative psychosocial consequences. Internet addiction is a kind of consumer behavior that has attracted the attention of many studies. This study was conducted to see not only the prevalence of Internet addiction in male and female students, but also to see the relationship between internet addiction and level of anxiety. The study sample consists of 256 subjects of Faculty of Social Sciences, in University of Tirana, Albania, where 142 subjects are female and 114 others are male. Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were used as instruments for data collection. From the data analysis results to have not a significant relationship between the level of Internet addiction and the level of anxiety in university students, but we can see gender differences with regard to this aspect.

Relationship of Internet Addiction with Depression, Loneliness and Health Related Lifestyle among University Students

Internet addiction (IA) is a newly emerged clinical disorder and it has negative effects on physical and mental health. University students are the most vulnerable group for IA. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship of IA with depression, loneliness and health related lifestyle among university students. Cross-sectional survey was conducted by enrolling 175 students of Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya. Internet addiction test (IAT) was used to assess the level of IA. Depression, loneliness, and health related lifestyle were assessed using Peradeniya depression scale (PDS), University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) loneliness scale and health practice score (HPS) respectively. T-test and ANOVA were conducted to examine the differences; and correlation and regression analyses were used to examine the relationships between variables. Overall, 40.6% of students were placed in IA group. Generally 28.6% of students had mild and 12.0% had moderate addiction. No case of severe IA was seen. There were 20.6% of students in depressive state and 17.1% of students had poor HPS. The average score that the student got from loneliness scale was 23.42. There was a positive significant correlation between IA and both depression and loneliness. Moreover, a negative significant correlation found between IA and health related lifestyle. Male students had higher IA scores than female students. The study results are considered to develop preventive interventions and treatment strategies.

Loneliness and Internet Addiction Among University Students

The present study was designed to determine the relationship between loneliness and Internet addiction, based on a sample of young generation from Turkey. Participants in this study were students of the Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey (n = 440). Findings show that there is a statistically significant relationship (p <0.05) between students’ Internet addiction and only the grade they are studying. According to the correlation analysis, it was found that there is a negative relationship between the loneliness of students and the time they spend on the internet, and a positive relationship between internet addiction and age of students. Moreover, it was found that the age, time spent on the Internet and loneliness of university students were important determinants of Internet addiction.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTERNET ADDICTION AND DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, AND STRESS AMONG IUS STUDENTS

Today, with the widespread use of technology, new dependencies are seen. Internet dependency is one of them. Depression, anxiety, and stress are among the disorders seen in people with internet dependence. The accompanying conditions may also be the cause or effect of Internet dependency. The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between internet addiction and depression, anxiety, and stress in International University of Sarajevo students. In this study, the quantitative study is conducted. The research was conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina, using two scientific scales: Internet Addiction Test (IAT) of young (1998) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress (DASS). This study was conducted randomly among young adult at the International University of Sarajevo. The sample of the study consisted of 100 students (50 females, 50 males). The results have shown that there is a statistically significant, positive and weak correlation between internet addiction and depression, anxiety, and stress which means that students who have a higher level of depression, anxiety and stress tend to make a high level of internet addiction or vice versa.

The Effect of Loneliness, and Depression on Internet Addiction in Students

This is my first research journal on Internet addiction. This study aims to determine how much influence loneliness and depression have on internet addiction in college students. Internet addiction in this study was measured by the adaptation scale of the Internet Addiction Test, loneliness in this study was measured by the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, and depression in this study was measured by the adaptation scale of the Self-Rating Depression Scale.

Levels of Internet addiction and loneliness among students (Case study: The students of Universities of center of Golestan Province)

Objective: The Internet, as a social tool is a small part of research on virtual communication and loneliness. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the difference between levels of Internet addiction and loneliness. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted using descriptive survey method. The population of this study was the students of the universities of Golestan, who number was 16532. To determine the size of sample, 385 people were determined by volume estimation method according to Krejces & Morgan table. A proportional stratified random sampling method was used to select samples. Results: Findings of the research indicate that there is a significant negative relationship between loneliness and levels of internet addiction, as with increasing levels of Internet addiction, the feeling of loneliness is reduced. Relationship between the Levels of Loneliness and Internet Addiction

The purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between the levels of loneliness and internet addiction in teacher candidates. The research group of this study is formed with 347 teacher candidates who were attending Pedagogical Formation Program at Ankara University and Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. In the study, two different data collection tools were used. One of them was " UCLA Loneliness Scale " and the other one is " Internet Addiction Scale ". The opinions of the teacher candidates about loneliness and internet addiction did not differ according to the variables of gender, marital status, employment, accessibility to the internet at home and online time spent daily except for studying. However, there is a positive relationship in medium level between the loneliness and internet addiction levels of teacher candidates.

Analysis of the Relationship between University Students' Problematic Internet Use and Loneliness

The computer is part of the information and communication age, and the Internet today is the most used communication tool. Studies have shown that there is a relationship between problematic Internet use and loneliness. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between problematic Internet use sub-scales and loneliness. In this study, data were collected from the college students at an Anatolian University in Turkey. The participants of this study consisted of 392 undergraduates. Of the participants, 43% are male (n = 167) and 57% female (n = 225). The average age for the participants is 22 years old. The Problematic Internet Use Scale and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale were used as data collection instruments. In the present study, structural equation modeling (SEM) procedures are used to explore the relationships that exist among the variables. The findings of the study revealed that while university students’ social benefit/social comfort of Internet has a direct effect on their excessive Internet use and negative consequences, it is related to the loneliness level indirectly. In addition, it is seen in the research model that with an increase in the negative consequences of the Internet, the loneliness level was raised. Another result from the study is that when university students’ excessive Internet use increased, their loneliness level decreased.
