Portfolio selection is one of the important problems encountered by any investor. The purpose of this paper is to solve a real stock portfolio selection problem in Iran. According to the uncertain environments in which financial decisions are made, most of the recent works in this field use fuzzy sets theory in order to incorporate these uncertainties into their analysis. The problem is to determine how to allocate a limited fund among the stocks of some pharmaceutical companies in Tehran stock exchange. For this purpose we apply two fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) methods to this problem. Finally, the results obtained from the two methods are compared in terms of the solution quality.
Applicability of Fuzzy TOPSIS Method in Optimal Portfolio Selection and an Application in BIST
International Journal of Economics and Finance, 2017
General structure of saving-investment cycle and the effectiveness of this structure are included in the most significant issues of the financial system. One of the points of intervention in providing an effective saving-investment cycle is possible through channeling the savings toward optimal investment fields. This study aims at detecting the existence of alternative methods in determining optimal selection combination in the risk and revenue perspective of individual and corporate investors who would like to evaluate their savings in capital markets. For this purpose, the applicability of Fuzzy TOPSIS method, one of the multi-criteria decision making techniques in optimal portfolio selection was researched. The applicability of the stock investment alternatives ranked according to Fuzzy TOPSIS method was examined by comparing them to the optimal selection results determined according to Markowitz, one of the modern portfolio management techniques. In the study where performance ...
Optimal Selection of Stock Portfolios Using Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Methods
Mathematics
In the past, investors used their own or others’ experiences to achieve their goals. With the development of financial management, investors’ choices became more scientific. They could select the optimal choice by using different models and combining the results with their experiences. In portfolio optimization, the main issue is the optimal selection of the assets and securities that can be provided with a certain amount of capital. In the present study, the problem of optimization, i.e., maximizing stock portfolio returns and minimizing risk, has been studied. Therefore, this study discussed comprehensive modeling for the optimal selection of stock portfolios using multi-criteria decision-making methods in companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange. A sample of 79 companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange was used to conduct this research. After simulating the data and programming them with MATLAB software, the cumulative data analysis model was performed, and 24 companies ...
A fuzzy-hybrid analytic model to assess investors' perceptions for industry selection
Decision Support Systems, 2016
The 2008-2009 global financial crisis and its subsequent ramifications on capital markets have led to an increasing attention on the importance of cognitive and behavioral issues in finance. The purpose of this study is to determine the ranking of the industry alternatives for portfolio investments based on individual investors' perceptions. Accordingly, a hybrid analytic multi-criteria decision model (MCDM)-based on the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and the Fuzzy Technique for the Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) methods along with sensitivity analysis-is developed to identify and rank-order the best performing industry options. The proposed model is applied to Borsa Istanbul Stock Exchange 100 Index (BIST 100) in Turkey. The results indicate that (i) the investors' perceptions on market conditions and global financial situation influence their industry selection on company stocks; (ii) the investors' perceptions on portfolio investments rely heavily on performance and risk levels of individual asset/stocks, and (iii) traded stocks of financial industry (along with its sub-industries) have greater performance expectations than those of the ones in other industries such as technology, services and tourism.
A multicriteria methodology for equity selection using financial analysis
Computers & Operations Research, 2009
In this article we present a multiple criteria methodology for supporting decisions that concern the selection of equities, on the basis of financial analysis. The ELECTRE Tri outranking classification method is employed for selecting the attractivex equities, through the evaluation of the overall corporate performance of the corresponding firms. The crucial importance issue of the industry/sectoral accounting particularities was strongly taken into account. An elaborate review of coherent research studies is also provided. Finally, the validity of the proposed methodology is tested through a large scale application on the Athens Stock Exchange.
Fuzzy Expert System for Stock Portfolio Selection: An Application to Bombay Stock Exchange
2022
Selection of proper stocks, before allocating investment ratios, is always a crucial task for the investors. Presence of many influencing factors in stock performance have motivated researchers to adopt various Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to make this challenging task easier. In this paper a novel fuzzy expert system model is proposed to evaluate and rank the stocks under Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Dempster-Shafer (DS) evidence theory is used for the first time to automatically generate the consequents of the fuzzy rule base to reduce the effort in knowledge base development of the expert system. Later a portfolio optimization model is constructed where the objective function is considered as the ratio of the difference of fuzzy portfolio return and the risk free return to the weighted mean semi-variance of the assets that has been used. The model is solved by applying Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm by giving preference to the top ranked stocks. The performance of the model proved to be satisfactory for short-term investment period when compared with the recent performance of the stocks.
In this paper, a two-phase approach based on multi-criteria decision making and multi-objective optimization is developed to solve the problem of optimal portfolio selection. In the first phase, the initial selection of suitable companies for investment is done by considering the criteria extracted from the literature review. In the second phase, a multi-objective mathematical optimization model is developed to determine the optimal investment in each company according to risk and return criteria. In order to deal with uncertainty conditions, a data-based approach is used, which is one of the newest applied methods in this field. According to the obtained results, it is observed that cash adequacy ratio with score 0.1604 is the most important criterion and operating profit with score 0.004 is the least important one. In the alternative prioritization section, it is concluded that Shraz, Shavan, Shenft and Vanft companies have a high priority for investment. In solving the mathematic...
Optimization of Portfolio Using Fuzzy Selection
BAREKENG: Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan
The problem of portfolio optimization concerns the allocation of the investor’s wealth between several security alternatives so that the maximum profit can be obtained. One of the methods used is Fuzzy Portfolio Selection to understand it better. This method separates the objective function of return and the objective function of risk to determine the limit of the membership function that will be used. The goal of this study is to understand the application of the Fuzzy Portfolio Selection method over shares that have been chosen on a portfolio optimization problem, understand return and risk, and understand the budget proportion of each claim. The subject of this study is the shares of 20 companies included in Bursa Efek Indonesia from 1 January 2021 until 1 January 2022. The result of this study shows that from 20 shares, there are 10 shares that is suitable in the forming of optimal portfolio, those are ADRO (0%), ANTM (43.3%), ASII (0%), BBCA (0%), BBRI (0%), BBTN (0%), BRPT (0%...
Fuzzy Portfolio Selection: a comparative study
European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology, 2005
In this paper, we carry out the numerical study of a fuzzy portfolio selection model where the objective is to minimize the downside risk and the rates of returns on securities are approximated by means of LR-fuzzy numbers of trapezoidal form. Data from 96 securities over 195 month are used to compare the selected portfolios with a simple utility function and with the outof-sample data as well as to investigate their true performance.
Fuzzy multi-attribute evaluation of investments
Most companies have a large number of projects that they would like to do for various reasons. However, usually there is never enough time and money available to complete all of them. Selecting a portfolio from available project proposals is crucial for the success of each company. This paper proposes a practical framework for modelling projects portfolio selection problem with fuzzy parameters resulting from uncertainty associated with decision makers' judgment. A fuzzy multi-attribute decision-making approach is adopted. A two-step evaluation model that combines fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity Ideal Solution) methods is used to rank potential projects. The proposed approach is illustrated by an empirical study of a real case from steel industry involving five criteria and ten projects.
