Basically, the paper is centered on the construction, resp. the use of concepts in everyday life and on the need to legitimize sociological concepts in everyday practices. In particular, it focuses on the issue of everyday measurement. This issue is considered in the light of a comparison between the specificity of everyday measurement in M. Heidegger’s Being and Time (§§ 23, 24) and the so-called ‘standardized categories’ in the context of H. Sacks’ everyday ‘measurement systems’ (Lectures on Conversation). Special emphasis is placed on the complementarity between the two styles of thought, and on the logic of using everyday measurement constructs in everyday practices. The question of the legitimacy of the concepts sociology works with has always been the subject of fierce debate. At the same time, however, it has as a rule been concerned with the relevance of these concepts as part of the scientific toolbox and therefore with the need to legitimate them before the scientific community. Hence the self-evident requirement for researchers to exhibit the tools they use. To put it another way, it is an insistence on arguing for the purity of the scientific method or its ability to leave no trace on the subject under study. This indestructible scientific ideology is usually guided by the assumption that there is a deep order of social organization invisible to the everyday eye that can be revealed by the power of good method, formulated both at a distance from the reality under study and as sensitive to it. The problematic nature of this perspective has not, of course, gone unnoticed, above all in the tradition of so-called 'understanding' sociology, however broad and ill-defined this category may seem.
