is a Slovak ethnologist and museologist, emeritus university professor, member of various scientific institutions in Slovakia as well as abroad, member of editorial boards of prestigious journals. Botík's areas of professional interest include kinship, family and social life, folk architecture and housing, migration studies, theories of ethnicity and ethnic minorities, Slovaks living abroad, and ethnic minorities living in Slovakia. Among other research areas, Professor Botík's interests have been directed to urbanism in relation to folk architecture, burial customs, and ethnographic photography of such artists as Karol Plicka and Pavol Socháň. He completed academic fellowships and field research in various countries, such as Argentina (1991), Bulgaria (1994) and USA (1995-1996). Professor Botík authored and edited more than twenty scientific books and wrote more than two hundred scientific articles. He was also a supervisor of several doctoral students. Many of them later became leading experts in the field of ethnology and folkloristics. On November 13 th 2018 he celebrated his eightieth birthday. On the following pages I will address Botík's most significant works and accomplishments as well as his academic career.
