Analyzing the Use of Information Systems in Logistics Industry
Information Systems Research Methods, Epistemology, and Applications, 2009
Information and communication technology (ICT) refer to a family of technologies that facilitate information capturing, storing, processing, disseminating, and providing a supportive role for human activities to enhance organizational efficiency and effectiveness. With the use of ICT, organizations are expected to have better decision-making capabilities and faster execution of activities. Logistics activities in a company consist of a wide scope of processes ranging from planning and implementing material flow and storage, services, and information from the point of origin to the point of consumption. If ICT could be used to support these activities, logistics cost would decrease over the long term and the efficiency of logistics activities would increase substantially. In this chapter, we explain a method for studying the impact of ICT in logistics companies. This type of study is useful to devise a long term business process improvement policy in a country or a region. We suggest methods for collecting data and presenting them through descriptive and statistical analysis. We suggest the use of t-statistic method to test relationships between various variables and ICT implementation. We have provided a hypothetical case study to show the steps in the analysis. We believe that the chapter will be useful to researchers in conducting studies on the impact and suitability of ICT in logistics and other service providing sectors. The results obtained from this type of study can help the decision makers to understand the opportunities and hurdles in achieving greater efficiency in the organizational processes through the use of modern information technology.

Effects of Information Technology on Logistics Firms' Performance in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia
International Journal of Academic Research in Accounting, Finance and Management Sciences
Logistics is the backbone of global economic growth. When the economy grows rapidly, more efficient logistics are required to accommodate the growth. Information technology (IT) has aided in the transformation of logistics firms' supply chain roles. As a result, IT is regarded as a critical factor influencing the process of modern logistics companies in terms of efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery. Although implementations have become more widely used in recent years, there is still little research focusing on the actual adoption effects on the logistics industry's company performance in Malaysia. The study's goals are to look at how IT implementation in tracking, safety and security, customer service, and information integration affects the performance of logistics firms in Shah Alam, Selangor. The hypotheses and prediction model in this study are tested using correlation and multiple regression analysis based on data collected from 44 logistics firms in Shah Alam, Selangor. The findings show that IT implemented in tracking, safety and security, customer service, and IT integration have a significant positive impact on firm performance. The largest contributor among the three variables is IT integration, followed by customer service, and the smallest contributor is tracking, security, and safety. This research will assist logistics players in achieving superior performance in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. As such, it is useful for strategic IT investment planning and decision making, as well as developing systematic approaches to IT implementation in the logistics industry.

Transforming Maritime Logistics with The Power of Information Technology
2018
Ports are an essential component of a portal cities' critical infrastructure set. Ports are both a doorway to commerce with other regions as well as an enabler of development within the city and its surroundings. Therefore, a highly productive and competitive port will be the key to accelerating such development. Advancements in Information Technology (IT) and automation have become critical drivers for increasing the productivity and competitiveness of ports to work more efficiently, which in turn may reduce both costs and time. This paper examines the power of Information Technology to transform maritime logistics in Indonesia using Australia as a reference point. Both countries incorporate Information Technology in their strategic plans, with Australia focusing on increasing automation and Indonesia developing the Indonesia National Single Window. In this study, important data regarding Information Technology in ports were gathered using online surveys. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were conducted in Melbourne, Jakarta, and Surabaya. The information extracted from these activities, is then used to examine the issues relating to application of information technology in maritime logistics. The challenges and obstacles to implementing IT in ports in Indonesia are also examined. The study found that maritime logistics productivity can be boosted by: having a vehicular booking system that can optimize port-road connectivity by optimizing the allocation of timeslots for transport resources; an integrated common platform that enables 2 different stakeholders and service providers to work collaboratively; the vision and importance of the smart city concept and the important role of IT in maritime logistics; and lastly, skill, capability and capacity building in this area. The study shows that creating and sustaining long term competitive advantage rests heavily on the management's understanding of these critical issues facing their ports and their will to solve the problems that arise from these issues.
