Dialogue as a Constituent Resource for Dramatic Discourse: Language, Person and Culture

The article is devoted to the description of peculiarities of a person, language and culture. The offered approach of studying the human factor in the language singles out implicit connotations and makes it possible to see the differences in the perception of the reality by the members of the nation. The idea of the language as an environment of the existence of a person with which the constant interconnection happens; the person being the center of the linguistic picture of the world as the beginning of all categorical coordinates of the language is considered to be the basic idea. Studies of dramatic dialogue as discourse, as a special speech exchange system, are hardly in evidence, even in research of the language of drama. The Application of Discourse Analysis to Drama: A Cross-cultural Approach

This paper aims at briefly demonstrating how the major procedures of discourse analysis (i.e. speech acts, presuppositions, and the cooperative principle in conversation and general discourse relations) may be fruitfully applied to drama dialogue. Such a kind of purposive approach, in turn, makes it rather reasonable to distinguish between literary criticism and theatrical analysis, but not so that one is deemed to be superior to the other. "Co-operative Labour Division" is crucial because a production of a play is in effect "a play-an interpretation of it". In terms of this context, literary criticism should also take the text as its object of investigation and develop techniques of textual analysis to cope with the implied aspects embedded within a set of linguistic or sociological conventions. All this does suggest that the most important sets of linguistic conventions for interpretation are those which govern language use. This effect means treating the text as a series of communicative acts, not just as a configuration of elements belonging to various levels of language.

Examining the Language of Drama Texts with a Reference to Two Plays: A Stylistic Study, 2016

Analyzing the language of drama texts stylistically can be somehow challenging, due to the fact, dialogues need certain tools and techniques to be used. Therefore, the fundamental purpose of conducting this work is to show how to analyze plays stylistically. This paper focuses on two plays, namely, Major Barbra by G.B. Shaw, specifically, act (1) and knuckle by David Hare. In addition, showing a kind of comparison between the two playwrights' writing style, their choices and the linguistic variations, which the two texts have. Mainly, the analysis is based on Thornborrow and Wareing's (1998) model. This model applies methods of stylistics to analyze the aesthetic side of the language of the selected texts. This model also allows researchers to refer to certain tools related to pragmatics and discourse analysis to investigate the dialogues in order to reach to rightful interpretation. Since the language of drama texts shows diversity in its form, this methodology looks at a drama text as a combination of different genres which they need different tools from linguistics. In this way, readers can gain an understanding of the texts by following rational and tangible evidences from the language of the texts.

This paper discusses the CIU, the splendid technique to teach, learn, produce and examine drama, dramatic form and its structure. Here author tried to focus on methodology of drama. This technique enormously emphasize on the frame work of drama. It also helps to know the sole characteristics of a drama. Thismethod promptly responses the evaluator’s mind to disclose any works of art as a drama. The paper is started with a brief introduction ofthe concept of drama. Further it focuses on the importance of the work as well as the method in the field of structural approach of drama. Then further discusses the methodology steps by steps and analyzes the procedure of evaluation whether it is a drama. In conclusion we consider this methodas a “touchstone” to evaluate the literary piece as a drama. It also has shown the technique how to implement the method. Teaching drama will much easier by using this method.

Exploring the Language of Drama From Text to Context

This book is designed to help students to explore the language of dramatic texts through the approach usually known as ‘stylistic analysis’, an approach which is already well-established for the analysis of poetry and prose fiction (see, for example, this book’s companion volumes: Twentieth-century Poetry: From text to context, edited by Peter Verdonk, and Twentieth-century Fiction: From text to context, edited by Peter Verdonk and Jean Jacques Weber). How does the stylistic analysis of drama differ from the stylistic analysis of poetry or prose? Let’s explore this issue through an example.

Conflict Analysis of Novel Main Character: A Discourse Perspective

This study aims to analyze the conflicts of main characters depicted in the Sidney Sheldon novel entitled “Tell Me Your Dreams” published in 1998 using both discourse analysis approach and textual analysis. It is to find out how discourse can be formally use to analyze and reveal the internal and external conflicts of the main characters using a medium of lexical choices and the flow of the dialog among the characters. This study used a qualitative descriptive research method. It is concerned with the description and explanation of phenomena involving the main characters of the novel. The lexical choices and some linguistic features used in the dialog among the main characters shows show both internal and external conflicts in this novel. In this novel there are also external conflicts. Using certain lexical terms in the plot, this novel is packed with neat stories and provides images and knowledge of life for readers.

.+Forming+Mental+and+Context+Models+Applying+Sociolinguistic+Tools+to+Understand+Fiction

The study, takes up John Steinbeck's The Pearl as one of the case by applying the sociocognitive model of Van Dijk's theory of critical discourse analysis. CDA is used here as a tool to analyze and study the novel. Besides the use of selected CDA tool in understanding the formation and development of cognitive models from within the text, this paper also relates the findings with the overarching themes of resistance, exploitation, and counter-efforts against the ruling elite or ruling capitalists. The primary objective of this study is to understand and evaluate how context and mental models, as per theoretical disposition by van Dijk, are formed in fiction. The researchers have found that various mental and context models have been formed within the text using different strategies and tools at sentential level. This work concludes the ways in which language is used to varying degrees to exploit, resist and manipulate one another in society. Such sociolinguistic tools can also be applied in other narratives for better and detailed understanding.

Penerjemahan Dialog Berimplikatur Dari Bahasa Inggris Ke Bahasa Indonesia Dalam Novel a Game of Thrones

The objectives of this research are to know the types of implicature contained in the dialogue of A Game of Thrones, the strategy of translation used by the translator in translating the dialogue consisting implicature, and the equivalence deviation of translation. This research uses qualitative method which is comparative content analysis. The data is the dialog taken from A Game of Thrones. All the dialogues in the source text and in the target text are analyzed by using the comparative model. To analyze the types of implicature used Desilla's Theory. To analyze the strategy of translation used Molena and Albir and Newmark's theories. To analyze the equivalence used Koller's theory, and to analyze the deviation in translation used Newmark's theory. The risult of this research shows there are three types of implicature transference in translation. They are presevation about 129 (96.3%), explicitation 2 (1.5%), and modification 3 (2.3%). It means most of implicature in the dialogues are transfered into the equivalent implicature. For strategy of translation, there are eleven strategies of translation used by the translator.

Discourse Analysis (DA) versus Stylistics: the Main Distinctions

This paper sets out to point out the main dist inctions between two fields of study : Discourse analysis and Stylistics. As an illustrati on, an analysis of Shakespeare’s Act 3, scene 3 from Othello will be studied according to a discourse- oriented perspective, and then the same scene will be focused on accordin g to a stylistic analysis. Besides, we shall show how discourse analysis focuses on the relation between language and the contexts in which it is used whereas stylistics focuses on the relation between pattern and meaning in a context.
