Electromechanical interaction of linear piezoelectric materials with a surface electrode (original) (raw)
2000, Journal of Materials Science
This paper presents a study on the electromechanical interaction between a compliant surface electrode and a semi-infinite piezoelectric material. Using integral transforms, general expressions of stresses, displacements, electric potential and electric displacement have been obtained for symmetrically deformed electrode. For surface electrode subjected to uniform displacement, the normal stress at the edges of the electrode displays a square root singularity. Such a stress singularity will eventually induce the initiation of crack and introduce mechanical and electric instability.

This paper concerns the determination of singular electromechanical stress field in piezoelectrics. A one-dimensional finite element procedure is generalized to compute the eigensolutions of the singular electromechanical field. The generalized procedure is capable of taking differently poled piezoelectrics, cracks and ultra-thin electrodes into account. To determine the strength of the singular electromechanical stress field, the hybrid-Trefftz finite element method is adopted. The independently assumed electromechanical stress modes are extracted from the eigensolutions previously computed from the one-dimensional procedure. Since the eigensolutions satisfy all the balance conditions, the hybrid-Trefftz models can be constructed by boundary integration. This feature enables the models to be interfaced compatibly with conventional finite element models. To illustrate the efficacy of the present approach, the eigensolutions and/or parameters directly related to the electromechanical stress intensity in crack, interfacial crack and bimorph with embedded electrode are considered. The predictions are in good agreement with the reference solutions reported in the literature or computed by using over 10,000 conventional finite elements. Finite element modeling of piezoelectric materials under electromechanical loading
Nowadays, there are increasing interests in piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials which are especially used in scientific and engineering applications. Though these materials have good characteristics, the behavior for large loadings can only be described by nonlinear relations which limit their usage in high performance applications. Domain switching (ferroelastic or ferroelectric) is the main reason for the nonlinearity of ferroelectric materials. External excessive electromechanical loads (mechanical stress and electric field) are driving forces for the domain switching process. The nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric materials subjected to electromechanical loading is simulated by a theoretical micromechanical approach using a 3-D finite element model. The model accounts for differently oriented grains. The dipole directions of the grains in the simulation model are randomly distributed. This is obtained by three equally distributed Euler angles for each grain at virgin state. Uni-axial, quasi-static loading is applied in the simulations. The behavior of piezoelectric materials subject to electromechanical loading is then investigated for a constant compressive stress and a cyclic electric potential at the electrodes. The response of the macroscopic behavior of the bulk ceramic is predicted by averaging the response of all individual grains. It is assumed that a crystal switches if the reduction in free energy of the grain exceeds a critical energy barrier. Due to intergranular effects domain switching may occur in reality even for those grains, for which the critical energy level is not reached. This effect is modeled by introducing a probability for domain switching, which depends on the ratio of the actual energy level to the critical energy level. Different functions may also be used to describe the probability. In the present work, however we restrict to polynomials. Using these probability functions it is possible to model the nonlinearity even in a small electromechanical loading range. The effect of different orders of the polynomial for the probability function and different material parameters are also analyzed. The results of the simulations are compared with experimental data taken from the literature. In addition to this, rate dependent properties of piezoceramics are investigated by implementing various frequencies of cyclic electrical loading. The frequency dependence of the behavior is obtained by using linear kinetics theory. In this approach the nucleation and propagation of the domain wall during domain switching is modeled. In the simulations different amplitudes of alternating loading are applied with various frequencies in order to understand the macroscopic behavior of piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials. Important parameters are the coercive field and the remnant polarization and strain characterization under various loading situations. The response of the material to the applied loading is
NEW DEVELOPMENTS CONCERNING PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS WITH DEFECTS
Abstract-The problem of a piezoelectric body with an elliptic cavity is revisited within the framework of two-dimensional electro-elasticity, In contrast to our previous formulation, the present analysis is based on the use of exact electric boundary conditions at the rim of the hole, thus avoiding the common assumption of electric impermeability. Expressions for the elastic and electric variables induced inside and outside the cavity are derived in closed form in terms of complex potentials. Comparisons between present (exact) and previous (approximate) models are effected to establish the limitations associated with the assumption of the impermeable hole, in particular when it becomes a slit crack. contribute to the high electromechanical performance of stressbiased actuators with particular attention being given to the importance of the extrinsic (domain wall translation) response mechanism. Based on the variation in lateral stress through the thickness of the piezoelectric layer within these devices, it has been suggested that the piezoelectric coefficient varies as a function of position within the layer, though no direct evidence has been previously presented. In this study, the results of Moiré interferometry investigations of local strains within these devices are reviewed. The technique permits effective depth-profiling of local deformations at reasonably high (0.25 µm) resolution. A least squares regression analysis approach was used in conjunction with classical laminate theory and free edge effects to fit this experimental data to depth-dependent piezoelectric response. As expected, higher d-coefficients were predicted for the upper free surface of the device compared to the interface with the stainless steel substrate. The predicted values were in general agreement with expectation and are further considered from the perspective of recent reports in the literature regarding multi-axial loading effects on the electromechanical properties of lead zirconate titanate-based piezoelectric ceramics.
Integrated piezoelectric structures under external mechanical stress: Theory and experiments
2010 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium, 2010
The purpose of the study is to understand and predict the behavior of integrated structures when submitted to external or internal mechanical stress. This is of primary importance in the field of thick or thin film technology. In our laboratory, a modified KLM model that enables to compute the electroacoustic behavior of piezoelectric materials under external mechanical stress has been developed. In this present work, we produce the first experimental results of electromechanical characterizations of reference materials under external mechanical stress in order to further validate our model. A static stress (with a stepper motor) and a superimposed dynamic wave (with PZT actuator) are applied to PZT type materials (PZ21 and PZ26). The hysteretic behavior and the evolution with the stress (0 to 100 MPa) of plane wave velocity are presented for the two samples. The evolution of ultrasonic wave velocities along the direction of stress are treated using conventional pulse echo technique. Results validate the acoustical and mechanical method but show high sensitivity of the mechanical aspect and reveal the need to enhance the experimental setup to obtain more accurate values.
Problems of strenght and plasticity, 2019
The paper addresses to the plane contact problem on an electrode on the surface of a functionally graded piezoelectric coating glued with no friction with a homogeneous piezoelectric half-plane. The coating and the substrate are assumed to be transversely isotropic, the axis of isotropy coincides with the axis of polarization and normal to the surface of the coating. Arbitrary independent variation of the electroelastic properties of the coating in depth is considered. Plane electrode is placed on the surface of the coating and potential difference is applied which leads to an el ectroelastic deformation of the coating and substrate. Using the integral transformation technique, the problem is reduced to the solution of the dual integral equation. This equation is solved by the bilateral asymptotic method, based on an idea of using Pade approximation of the kernel transform of the integral equation. An approximated dual integral equation is solved in a closed analytical form. Approxi...

Eccentric Crack in a Piezoelectric Strip Under Electromechanical Loading
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 2000
We consider the problem of determining the singular stresses and electric fields in a piezoelectric ceramic strip containing a Griffith eccentric crack off the center line under anti-plane shear loading with the theory of linear piezoelectricity. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to the solution of two pairs of dual integral equations, which are then expressed to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Numerical values on the stress intensity factor and the energy release rate are obtained, and the influences of the electric fields for piezoelectric ceramics are discussed.
