Mental disorders are considered as incurable diseases and are related to sin or crime, so that sometimes the treatment is brutal and inhumane. Wrong perceptions or myths related to mental disorders (schizophrenia) still exist in Indonesia; some cultural societies always link the cause of mental disorders caused by the occult. Background Mental illness is associated with misunderstanding and unfavorable attitude worldwide. The belief in its spiritual nature made traditional healers the main service consultants for mentally ill patients. The present study is a cross-sectional study conducted among 425 main family caregivers of mentally ill patients at Assiut University Hospital. The objective of the study was to assess the caregivers’ knowledge and attitude towards mental illness as well as their health-seeking behavior for their mentally ill relatives. Results The studied caregivers had low scores of knowledge and attitude towards mental illness. Age of the caregivers, their education, and the type of first consulted care and aggressive behavior of the mentally ill relatives were the significant predictors of caregivers’ knowledge and attitude towards mental illness. Developing a Scale to Measure the Attitudes of Turkish People Towards Mental Illnesses
The purpose of this study was to examine the attitude of people towards individuals with mental illnesses. The sample was composed of 136 participants with a mean age 26.72 (SD=10.36) that ranged between 14 to 61 years. In order to understand the relationship between the variables, a self-prepared questionnaire was used. The results showed that the attitudes of Turkish people towards mental illnesses could be measured on three subscales: the influence of supernatural forces, stigmatization, and fear & exclusion. Furthermore, while age did not have an influence on the attitudes people had towards the mentally ill, the level of education seemed to have. Objective: To study the knowledge of mental illness and assess the perception and attitude of health care professionals towards mentally ill patients using a questionnaire. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted by department of Pharmacology, Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College attached to Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research from April to May 2016. The protocol was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee. After obtaining written informed consent a predesigned, validated questionnaire was used to assess the attitude and knowledge of Health Care Professionals towards mental illness. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: Out of 303 approached 287 gave consent to participate in the study. There were 170 male (59.2%) and 117 female (40.8%) participants. Regarding knowledge and attitude towards mentally ill patients 83.96% agreed that psychological counselling can help the patients to return to their normal life. Only 31.3% strongly agreed to have the knowledge to use talking therapy techniques and most of them (43.9%) were of the opinion that they require training course to find out which type of talking therapy is required clinically. They also disagreed to possess sufficient knowledge regarding group psychotherapy (41.11%) as well steps and techniques of group psychotherapy (42.50%). Conclusion: In the present study the health care professionals expressed to have knowledge regarding the techniques and skills used in counselling and psychotherapy but were lacking clinical experience in executing them.

Background. Stigmatizing attitudes to mental illness, and especially schizophrenia, are not limited to the general population but are also common among health professionals. Health professionals are in a position to model health related attitudes both in the general public and patients. Medical students are an interesting group to focus upon, since they are future health professionals and correcting stigmatizing attitudes is still possible during their educational curriculum.Methods. The aim of this study was to examine the attitudes of hospital staff toward major mental diseases: schizophrenia and depression.
