A Novel Hierarchical Technique for Offline Handwritten Gurmukhi Character Recognition

The increasing need of a handwritten character recognition system in the Indian offices such as banks, post offices and so forth, has made it an imperative field of research. In present paper, we have presented a novel hierarchical technique for isolated offline handwritten Gurmukhi character recognition. A robust feature set of 105 feature elements is proposed under this work for recognition of offline handwritten Gurmukhi characters using four types of topological features, namely, horizontally peak extent features, vertically peak extent features, diagonal features, and centroid features. For classification, we have used Support Vector Machines (SVMs) classifier in this work. SVMs classifier has been considered with four different kernels, namely, linear kernel, polynomial kernel, RBF kernel and sigmoid kernel. For training and testing of a classifier, we have used 3500 samples of isolated offline handwritten Gurmukhi characters written by one hundred different writers. We have achieved maximum recognition accuracy of 91.80% with proposed technique, while using PCA feature set and SVM with a linear kernel classifier.

Speech Synthesis for Punjabi Language Using Festival

Processing of digital speech plays an important role in modern speech communication research and applications. The main propose of digital speech is communication which means transmission of messages between human and computer systems. The process of converting the written text into speech is called Text-to-Speech (TTS) and the generation of "synthetic" speech is known as Speech Synthesis. This paper discusses the development of Text-to-Speech system using festival framework for Punjabi language which is in Gurumukhi script. Since festival uses concatenation approach, diphone has been chosen as the basic unit of concatenation for speech synthesis. We defined the phone set and possible number of diphones for Punjabi language. Apart from that configuration of Festival framework on Ubuntu 14.04 Linux is discussed. Recording of nonsense word has been done from which the diphones are extracted for concatenation to produce speech. The aim of this paper is to give the details regarding the manipulations of some files required to add some new language in festival.

GFUC: Gurmukhi Font and Unicode Converter

Growth of information technology has played a great role in connecting the world together. The to and fro of information is common in this world. Fonts play a key major role in this communication process in digital domain. Common encoding scheme for one language helps in loss-less digital communication. Indian fonts lacks in this zone, as no Indian font has standard encoding format for mapping characters. Numerous indic fonts were created with diverse mapping schemes. Gurmukhi as one of the prominent Indian script also suffered from this negligence. This study investigates the Gurmukhi font and Unicode converter, which works for font to font substitution and font to Unicode substitution using an algorithmic process taking intake of Gurmukhi text written in OpenXML document. This converter works for 5 ASCII based legacy Gurmukhi fonts and tries to handle the diverse mapping scheme of these fonts. It gives the hustle free substitution mechanism for both inter-font and Unicode conversion. The performance of GFUC is measure of various well-defined norms and gives 100% accuracy during conversion.
