Learning process has been one of the important aspects of human life. Student's learning styles are among the acquired factors. Based on their individual differences, different students use different learning styles for their learning. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the study of learning styles among high school students and its relationship with educational achievement. The statistical population under investigation included girl's high school students in the city of Ilam, Iran in the school year of 2014. The statistical population was consisted of 3958 students. The sample group was selected by the stratified random sampling method based on Morgan's table and through multiple-steps sampling. In order to assess the learning styles, the online questionnaire for learning styles, by Felder and Solomon is used. Collected data analyzed using SPSS software. According to correlation coefficients, among students in experiential field, there is a positive significant relationship between students learning styles who use Visual-Verbal learning style and their score means and among students in mathematics field, there is a positive significant relationship between students learning styles who use Active-Reflective and Visual-Verbal learning style and their score mean. In humanities field, there is no significant relationship between the students learning styles that use Sequential-Global, Visual-Verbal and Sensing-Intuitive learning styles and their score means. The Kruskal-Wallis test shown that there is a significant difference between humanities students score means with mathematics and experiential students that have Active-Reflective learning style. There is a significant difference between score means of grade two students in all fields in Active-Reflective and Visual-Verbal learning styles and similarly in grade three students in all fields in Active-Reflective and Sequential-Global learning styles.
Learning Styles research paper
It has long been established that students have a variety of learning styles. Clearly explain the ways through which an effective teacher caters for the learning styles of his/her students. " Every child has a different learning style and pace. Each child is unique, not only capable of learning but also capable of succeeding. " quoted by Robert John Meehan. The purpose of education is to aid each student to achieve widespread development according to his/ her own qualities. To attain this, students should be afforded with suitable assistance and guidance in sync with their abilities and learning prerequisites, so that they can cultivate their fullest potential. According to Salvin (2012), learning can be defined as a relative change in behaviour brought about by experience whereas other theorists have outlined that learning in an acquisition of skills and knowledge through a particular experience. A learning style is a certain way that the mind receives and processes new information. To further develop, it outlines that each learner has distinct and consistent preferred ways of perception, organization and retention.
IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING STYLES MAGNITUDE IN EDUCATION
In present situation the whole education actually operates in classroom which focuses upon communicating the necessary knowledge and skills effectively to its recipient. However, the teaching is very delicate and complex activity carried out in the classroom. Galloway (1976) says, "The teacher must also be effective teaching, especially for those children whom he identifies as poor learners, since the simple truth is that poor learning usually follows that effective instruction is a major contributor to learning and that for child who is not learning ands that for child who is not learning well, instruction is ineffective. Thus, the questions emerge as to how a teacher could become effective for each of his students. Classroom observation reveal the basic fact that students differ in their reaction time, in the amount of encouragement, they need to attack learning task, in term of amount, frequency and type of motivation they require, in ways in which they deal with a given task and so on.
Learning Styles and Overall Academic Achievement in a Specific Educational System
2011
Experts assert that individuals enjoy various learning styles. In many cases what is being taught has a less impact on learners' achievement than the way materials are presented. In other words, learning styles make an important component in the learning environment. The Learning Styles Survey (LSS), employed in this study, appears to be a viable tool to determine students' learning style. The present study is an investigation of the relationship between learning styles and overall academic achievement. In order to investigate this relationship a total of 317 students participated in this survey study. The Learning Styles Survey (LSS) instrument which is based on Joy Reid's Perceptual Learning-Style Preference Questionnaire (1987) was used. The statistical procedures employed in this study were one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. The analyses of the data indicated a significant relationship between overall academic achievement and learning styles. It was also found that the high, moderate and low achievers have a similar preference pattern of learning in all learning styles. Moreover, the learning styles framework does not change with subjects, where it actually plays an important role across all the subjects. Therefore, the results here suggest avenues of future research to understand this phenomenon.
A correlational study on the factors affecting learning style
This study entitled as “a correlational study on the factor affecting the learning style of the grade ten students” this study was conducted in the Sisters of Mary School – Boystown, Inc. Tungkop, Minglanilla, Cebu. The respondents of this study is the grade ten students of the said school in the school year 2018-2019, in the identifying the sample size of the study the researchers used stratified random sampling. Out 329 grade ten students, 210 was the sample size. In gathering the data the researchers used two structured questionnaires; the factors affecting the learning behavior questionnaires and the perceptual learning style preference questionnaires. The researchers found out that there is a significant relationship between the learning style of the grade ten students and the factors that affects them. Generally, the learning style preferences of the students are on the major level, above all the factors that affects the learning style of the grade ten students the teachers has the greater impact. The teachers must give more emphasis to the activities that would help the students to acquire better learning style for their studies.
Academic Achievement of Students with Different Learning Styles
International Journal of Psychological Studies, 2011
The present study investigated the impact of learning styles on the academic achievement of secondary school students in Iran. The Kolb Learning Style Inventory (1999) was administered in eight public schools in Tehran. The mean of test scores in five subjects, namely English, science, mathematics, history and geography, was calculated for each student and used as a measure of academic achievement. A total of 285 Grade 10 students were randomly selected as sample of this study. The results of the analyses of variance show that there is a statistically significant difference in the academic achievement of the Iranian students that correspond to the four learning styles [F(3, 285) = 9.52, p < .05]; in particular, the mean scores for the converging and assimilating groups are significantly higher than for the diverging and accommodating groups.
The effect of learning styles on education and the teaching process
Journal of Social Sciences, 2009
Problem statement: It is of great importance that individuals actively participate in the learning process; that, starting from the early ages, their awareness be raised about the efficiency of the learning styles in developing their academic success and self-confidence; and that the learning styles they have be determined. For this reason, this study aimed to reveal the learning styles having great importance for succeeding in the learning process and to determine the efficiency of these styles in learning process. Approach: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of learning styles on education and the teaching processes. This empirical research served two key purposes: First purpose was to detect the impacts of the learning styles on teaching and learning methods and second purpose was to evaluate the key models in a variety of learning environments to better understand their merits and deficiencies. In this regard, after emphasizing "learning style" concept, this study examined the conceptual and applied researches that can explain the effects of learning styles on teaching and learning processes. Results: Education should help raising individuals who are able to look at the world from various perspectives. Individual differences should be taken into consideration in achieving these objectives. Education should be given by taking these differences into consideration in the educational and instructional processes. Individual brings some latent potencies produced by the genetic heritage; these latent potencies may be modified or develop by social acculturation in time. Conclusion: To provide the best way of learning to the individuals, learning style should be determined beforehand by considering the differences such as personality, perception, ability and intelligence.
