Knowledge and Awareness of Primary Teeth and Their Importance among Parents in Bengaluru City, India

Introduction: Often people responsible for the oral care of children feel or believe that since primary teeth will eventually shed, it is not worthwhile to spend time/money on providing good oral health to children. Parents are the ones who take care of their children and make decisions for them. Hence, they should have knowledge about primary teeth, their health and caring in order to build confidence in their children through tiny teeth. Aim: To assess the knowledge of primary teeth and their importance among parents with children below 12 years. Materials and methods: A total of 1,000 questionnaires containing questions written both in English and in the local language (Kannada) were prepared for data collection and were personally distributed to parents visiting dental clinics for their children's dental treatment. Statistical analysis: Both descriptive statistics and Chi-square test were used. Results: Complaints related to dental caries constituted 82% of children visiting dental clinics among children in Bengaluru city. Only 39% of respondents were aware of all functions of primary teeth. Conclusion: The present study revealed that the parents of Bengaluru city had superficial or partial knowledge of primary teeth and that there is a need to improve this awareness.

Evaluation of Parents Knowledge and Attitude Regarding the Importance of Primary Dentition Based on their Socio Economic Status

Aim: To assess parents’ attitudes towards the dental health of their children, considering the role of the family’s socioeconomic background. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire was formulated based on the literature review and the objective of the study and was self-administered to 400 parents, oral examination of the child was performed using WHO dentition status and treatment needs. Chi-square test was used for analysis. Results: The knowledge of parents regarding primary teeth was based on their socioeconomic status. A majority of parents from group II reported that primary teeth stay for 3 to 6yrs of age in contrast to parents from group V who said that primary teeth would remain till 12 yrs of age. A statistically significant difference was found between the various socioeconomic groups (p=0.000).

Parental Awareness and Attitudes Towards Preschool Oral Health of Children Visiting a Government Dental Hospital of Kashmir

Introduction: Child's development and oral health habits in childhood are influenced and shaped by parents, especially by mothers. More positive the parent's attitude towards oral health, the better will be the oral health of their children, which is often associated with decreased caries prevalence. The present study was conducted to evaluate parent's awareness and attitudes towards oral health of preschool children attending a Government Dental Hospital in Srinagar. Material and Methods: The present cross sectional study was conducted on parents of 345 children who visited the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Government Dental College and Hospital, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Data was collected by using self designed questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 10 questions pertaining to parent's awareness and attitudes towards oral health of preschool children. A total of 322 parents returned the questionnaire and thus were included in the study. The dental examination recorded the number of erupted, decayed, filled and extracted primary teeth (deft). Results: It was observed that limited participants were having knowledge about the oral health of preschool children. Conclusion: Our results indicate that parents who had better knowledge regarding oral health, their children were having significantly lesser tooth decay than those who thought otherwise. It is thus recommended to educate the parents on the importance oral health and periodic dental checkups. Further studies with a larger sample size are warranted to validate our hypotheses.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practical behavior of parents regarding their children’s oral health in Bathinda, Punjab. Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted among 500 parents who reported in outpatient department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bathinda, Punjab. Data were collected through a self‑administered questionnaire. The statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (21.0 version; Inc., Chicago IL, USA) for descriptive and multivariate analysis, and the level of statistical significance used in this study was chosen at P < 0.005. Introduction: Oral health knowledge and awareness among parents is an integral component of preventing dental caries among children. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to assess the parent's knowledge, awareness and perception regarding the care of primary teeth attending the Dental OPD, BPKIHS, Dharan, Nepal. Methodology: A questionnaire based survey was conducted among 200 parents in randomly selected manner. Results: The data was analyzed using SPSS software version 12.0. Queries of Parents Related to their Children\'s Oral Health in Rural and Urban Area of Jaipur: A Clinical Study

Background: There are a lot of questions in the mind of parents related to primary teeth. Various myths are also prevalent in the society about deciduous dentition. As a pediatric dentist, we come across various questions that are repeatedly asked, other than the chief complaint of the patient. No study has been conducted till date to address such queries. The current study highlights the major queries of parents related to their child's oral health. Objectives: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the most frequently asked questions by aediatric patient's parents in day-today practice apart from the chief complaint and to compare the queries of urban and rural population. Method: A sample size of 200 was taken for the study. Parents/attendants of the patients were given a questionnaire which consisted of queries of parents other than chief complain. The data were analyzed to find out what most of the parents want to know from a pediatric dentist about their child's dentition. Results: Based on the survey, we were able to evaluate the most common questions about child's oral health and it was observed that there is a difference in the queries of parents among the rural and the urban population. Conclusion: The role of a pediatric dentist is of the utmost importance in creating awareness among patients and their parents about oral health and the importance of primary teeth.

04 | P a g e MOTHER'S KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICES TOWARDS CHILD'S ORAL HEALTH CARE IN WESTERN MAHARASHTRA: A QUESTIONNAIRE STUDY

Background: It is important to initiate basic good oral health habits in childhood so that the appropriate dental norms are established and then maintained into adult life. The family is the first institution that influences child behaviour and development, especially mothers, who are the primary model for developing behaviour. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the mothers in Pune city. All mothers having children aged below 5 years old was selected in the study. The questionnaire includes a range of response options designed to identify the awareness among the mothers towards their child's oral health and also the various measures taken to maintain oral hygiene. Statistical analysis was done using descriptive statistics and the chi-square test. Results: In this study, a total of 500 subjects participated. The knowledge regarding fluorides was poor and the majority 62% of parents were unaware of the positive anti-cariogenic effect of fluoridated toothpaste on dental health. Around 91% of mothers feel it is essential to clean their child's teeth after every meal whereas 9% feel it is not so required. Conclusion: The mother's knowledge of the child's oral health care was inadequate. Oral health education and school oral health programs should be conducted at regular interval.
