Efficacy of Herbal Medicines as Remedies against COVID-19

Objective: Coronaviruses belong to the order Nidovirales, family Coronaviridae, and four genera, namely: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. In December 2019, a novel coronavirus was first officially reported in Wuhan City of China. Consequently, on February 11, 2020, the CSG named the virus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2); it causes the disease dubbed Covid-19. The virus was officially declared pandemic by WHO, on March 11, 2020. Up till date, no drug, including the existing ones, has been approved for covid-19 treatment. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19): a review of antiviral potential herbal medicines

In Wuhan, China, severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has emerged, causing serious symptoms in patients such as fever, dry cough, and exhaustion. This fatal pandemic spreads over the globe, causing significant infections in humans, mainly in the respiratory tract. COVID-19 is still without a treatment. Until date, researchers have paid close attention to new therapeutic methods, particularly promising antiviral medicines and vaccines. Especially, existing synthetic antivirals have been used against viruses that prevent replication, entry into the cell, and transmission of the virus. These antiviral agents have been the subject the basis of drug discovery studies that directly affect COVID 19. Therefore, we investigated on the potential herbal medicines against various RNA, and DNA viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. Finally, we recommend that natural substances and plants be investigated further, including clinical trials, for the treatment of COVID-19.
Herbal medicine, a reliable support in COVID therapy

At present, specific therapies for COVID-19 are not well established, being certain only that the immune system plays a decisive role in the initiation and progression of the disease. Plants have given and continue to give compounds with great efficiency and low toxicity, some of them being a starting point for extremely effective synthetic substances. Although herbal remedies are used mainly for preventive purposes, there are also guidelines issued by some countries that indicate the use of traditional remedies for different stages of COVID-19 disease.Europe has a long and strong tradition of using medicinal plants for therapeutic purposes, but clinical trials for this type of approach are scarce, compared to Asia. In this regard, a bridge between tradition and science, would have a strong impact on the capacity for prevention and treatment of COVID-19. The paper reviews compounds of plant origin that have previously proven effective in counteracting some coronaviruses but also some of their major effects-direct action on virus replicative apparatus (viral entry or replication, action on the viral enzymatic system), collateral action of natural compounds on the immune system and also the contribution of herbal medicine as vaccine adjuvants are tackled.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by a novel coronavirus, started in livestock within the markets of Wuhan, China and was consequently spread around the world. The virus has been rapidly spread worldwide due to the outbreak. COVID-19 is the third serious coronavirus outbreak in less than 20 years after Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in 2012. The novel virus has a nucleotide identity closer to that of the SARS coronavirus than that of the MERS coronavirus. Coronavirus pneumonia disease (COVID-19) is a newly identified coronavirus strain that causes symptoms ranging from cold-like signs to deaths that reached millions around the world. Until this time, there is no approved vaccine has been invented for clinical use, therefore, developing an effective program for therapy is of high priority to save the lives of patients and protect others from being infected. Nature resembles a huge reservoir of anti-infectious compounds, from which innovative ideas, therapies, and products can be deduced. Chinese herbal medicine had succeeded in the treatment of other coronavirus pneumonia such as SARS, MERS and, H7N9 avian influenza which gives us hope to find the targeted remedy in the traditionally used natural herbs consumed by natives from different regions. This work aims to highlight the use of natural traditional remedies to treat viral pneumonia. This systematic review will include studies of the effects of traditional herbal medicine and its role in the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia. Although promising results were obtained in many cases, but, only a few studies reported the fractional characterization of bioactive principles and/or mechanisms of action. It is requested that pharmaceutical industries, government agencies, and the scientific community will have a gaze at some of these plants for future research and, to find a potential drug candidates for the development of anti-SARSCoV-2 therapeutics in the near future.

Potential role of herbal medicinal agents against COVID-19 infection

In December 2019, a novel infection called Corona virus disease (COVID-19) was first detected in Wuhan, China; caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome Corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).On 11th March,2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 infection a pandemic. Since then the scientific community around the world is trying to decipher this infection to control it better. We have been successful in formulating the vaccine against it in record time, but during this course, it has taken a huge toll of human lives leaving behind people who got infected with various side effects of the infection. In the absence of any definitive treatment, many alternative modes of management systems have appeared. Various herbal agents appear to have a potential role in prevention and management of this infection. In the limited time so far, several studies have been conducted which have shown positive results but also highlights their potential drawbacks with insufficient scientific evidence. This review describes the potential role of common herbal agents as possible means of management of this infection and the need of further research in this direction where these traditional and relatively safe methods could be integrated in the management schemes of various chronic infections and diseases.
The Potentials of Medicinal Plants in the Treatment of Covid-19 Patients: A Review

COVID-19 pandemic (corona virus disease 2019 is a life threatening SARS-Cov-19 severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2) situation that was declared a public health emergency by WHO in early 2020. Today’s primary emphasis is on the treatment of COVID-19 yet the specific mode of action of antiviral agents being employed must be identified. At present, the human on risk are being vaccinated but there is no clear anti-COVID 19 medicine. This study focuses on herbal approaches as a potential alternative therapy for COVID-19, based on medicinal plants. Some herbs are well-known in different traditional medicines for prevention, cure and recovery of the diseases like COVID-19. Mostly the plant’s herbal extract inhibits viral replication; however several studies have shown that conventional herbal extracts may interact with important viral proteins associated with the virulence. Background: Various studies have been conducted to identify drug candidates to combat the virus, meanwhile some persons believe that consuming herbal medicines or medicinal plants that act as immunomodulators can prevent or even cure COVID-19. It was reported that about 85% of COVID-19 patients in China received combined treatment with Traditional and Complementary Medicine and regular medication. Recent systematic review has shown that herbal medicines can be significantly effective in alleviating different disease symptoms, including COVID-19. Objectives: The study was conducted to identify different herbal preparations and medicinal plants used in the prevention of COVI-19 and its symptoms. Methods: About twenty-five (25) different journal articles obtained from Pubmed, Elsevier, Hindawi, PLOS ONE, African Journals Online (AJOL), Lancet, Research gate, Google scholar and other journal hubs, relating to the use of herbal medicines and medicinal plants on prevention management of COVID-19 and related infection and its symptoms were reviewed and summarized to generate useful data and document the various herbs and medicinal plants employed in managing COVID-19. Results: From the results obtained, various plants have been tested across the globe as possible candidate in the prevention and management of COVID-19 symptoms. Some of the notable medicinal plants reported to have such properties include Artemisia annua, neem tree (Azadirachta indica), Garlic (Allium sativum), Lime or Lemon (Citrus limonum), Ginger (Zingiber officinale, Xanthorrhizol (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), Cinchona bark (Cinchona sp.), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), among others. Conclusion: Herbal medicines might have the capabilities to regulate the production and release of proinflammatory cytokines, interfere with the development of the virus in host cells, and modify certain molecular pathways related to the RAA system; hence many herbal agents might be useful in the prevention and possible treatment of COVID-19.
The Perspectives of Medicinal Plants for COVID-19 Treatment: A Review

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 as a pandemic disease due to its rapid spreading worldwide, caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that has brought about many fatalities. Until now, no effective treatment in the form of anti-virus medication or vaccine has been available for the disease. Therefore, this review aimed to identify some important medicinal plants with herbal formulae and guidelines which are used to treat viral diseases especially pandemic COVID-19 disease. Based on this argument, an online search was performed, which assisted to identify a group of plant species harboring antiviral properties. In the recent past, some natural herbal compounds prepared from existing medicinal plants available surrounding us have demonstrated encouraging antiviral properties. This review can be used as guidance of traditional medicine for the alternative treatment of COVID-19 disease with the utilization of medicinal plants.
