Design Elements Typography Fundamentals
Designers engage with words, typographically expressing them with purpose and poise. Typography is a process, a refined craft making language visible. Designers shape language with type and give words life and power to speak text fluently. Letterforms and their supporting characters are simple shapes that do so much. With distinct voices and personalities, type whispers delicately and shouts loudly. Communication lies at its core. Type is commanding and beautiful one moment, analytic and instructive the next. It is dramatic, whimsical, modest, and extravagant. Typographic practice (and those dedicated to it) gives spoken and written language vitality across time, generations, and cultures.

Typography is one of the magical things that people use on a daily basis. Any approach can be used to create a typeface including hand rendering, computer code or program generation. Based on ‘Text and Image’ by Mark Wigan (2008), letterforms can be manipulated in many different ways depending on the mood or context to be conveyed. Besides that, different classes of typefaces (fonts) have different innate levels of readability and legibility when using typography manipulation. This paper aims to identify the most suitable ways to apply manipulation in print advertising. The objectives are to analyze the important of typography manipulation, to investigate the awareness of public about typography manipulation effectiveness and identify the elements that brings about visual impact.
Legibility in typeface design for screen interfaces
2017
This thesis explores the considerations related to the design of a typeface specifically for the use in interface typography. The genre of interface typefaces is outlined and essential attributes and requirements of this category of typefaces are inspected from the viewpoints of legibility, readability and type design practices. The research is based on the analysis of interface typeface samples, interviews with type designers as well as empirical findings documented by designers. These trade practices and design artefacts are contrasted with findings from cognitive psychology and legibility research. Furthermore the author’s design of the «Silta» typeface and its creation process are used to scrutinize and validate these observations. Amongst the crucial factors in the design of interface typefaces the legibility of confusable characters is extensively analysed. Furthermore, the rasterized on-screen rendering of outline based fonts is identified as a major contributing factor requi...
Typographic Features of Text: Outcomes from Research and Practice
Typographic Features of Text: Outcomes from Research and Practice, 2014
This paper presents a comprehensive review of literature on the legibility of printed text in order to provide informed guidance on the design and preparation of typographic materials. To this end, experimental findings are taken into account, as well as the perspective of typographers, graphic designers, and authors. First, the typographic features of text are reviewed and illustrated individually to identify all the features that specifically characterise text layouts. It is emphasized, however, that the various typographic features should be selected in relation to each other, and that it is the combination and manipulation of all these typographic features as a group that makes the text legible. Studies are then reviewed and illustrated on the typographic structure of text as a whole. This information will prove useful to anyone involved in the development of typographic materials, including typographic and graphic designers, teachers and students
Digital Typeface Design and Font Development for Twenty-First Century Bangla Language Processing
Technical Challenges and Design Issues in Bangla Language Processing
Typeface and font design are fundamental to textual communication, and therefore, such communication, whether for use in print or on screen, is greatly enhanced and facilitated by the development and application of high-quality designs. The chapter discusses the key issues that underpin best practice in Bengali digital type design—from a design’s conception to its implementation, that is, the design concept and brief, the character set, the design dimensions, character fitting, and also the considerations for harmonious multi-script setting. The design methodology described is founded on research-based practice in non-Latin type design and font development. It considers how past practices in type-making and typesetting affected current Bengali typeforms and how an evaluation of these practices, in conjunction with the use of the existing and emerging font technologies, can inform the practitioner in the design of high-quality cross-platform OpenType Bengali fonts.

Principles of Typography for User Interface Design
Typography is a major part of the graphical user interface (GUI). Good user interface design depends on our understanding of how type works as a visual system. In this article, we summarize the typographic principles that were developed through print practice and show how they translate and expand within the electronic medium. We define typography as a dynamic system of contrasts resulting from the relationship of the type (its color, form, rhythm, and style) to its background. We then explain how to manipulate these contrasts to design effective GUI systems and presentations of text on the computer screen. We conclude by outlining the limitations and advantages of electronic type.
