The dynamic simulation of the urban traffic: A literature review

The establishment and planning of an urban traffic that meets all the requirements of mobility is the basis for achieving of effective economic and social activities within an agglomeration. To do this, several models and software simulations have been developed for very different purposes. The Traffic simulation is a tool to study the design and operation of facilities, to estimate the evolution of the traffic conditions on a network and to evaluate their consequences. Through this article, we propose an overview of the models and tools for modeling and simulating road traffic. At first, we start, through some definitions, to make an epistemological distinction between the notions of modeling and simulation in the field of traffic. We will then discuss the different modeling approaches used for the road traffic study. Subsequently, a classification of dynamic simulation tools and software will be presented.
Using Real Traffic Data for ITS Simulation: Procedure and Validation

The high levels of urban traffic is becoming a main concern in our societies, generating problems such as excessive fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. Recently, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have emerged as a way to mitigate these problems. However, traffic analysis and improvement typically rely on simulations, which should be as realistic as possible. Meeting this requirement can be complex when the actual traffic patterns, defined through an origin/destination (O-D) matrix for the vehicles in a city, remain unknown. In this paper we propose a novel technique in order to import traffic data to the SUMO mobility simulation tool. In particular, our approach starts from induction loop measurements available from traffic authorities, and then it uses the DFROUTER tool, along with a heuristic, to generate an O-D matrix for traffic that resembles the real traffic distribution. We apply our technique to the city of Valencia, and the obtained results are then compared through simulation to other existing traffic mobility data for the cities of Cologne (Germany) and Bologna (Italy), demonstrating the validity of our approach.

Computer simulation modeling is an established tool for assessing traffic operations. Over the past three decades, a variety of traffic simulation models have been developed, and many experiments and applications of these traffic simulation models to imaginary and real traffic operations have been conducted. This paper is intended to review widely used and newly developed models, in terms of modeling mechanisms, characteristics, and applications. Traffic simulation theories and approaches are briefly described. Simulation models developed for different traffic systems are then reviewed, including those for urban networks, freeways and integrated urban street/freeway systems. Important issues on model application are discussed.

The MULTITUDE Project (Methods and tools for supporting the Use, caLibration and validaTIon of Traffic simUlations moDEls) is an Action (TU0903) supported by the EU COST office (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) and focuses on the issue of uncertainty in traffic simulation, and of calibration and validation as tools to manage it. It is driven by the concern that, although modelling is now widespread, we are unsure how much we can trust our results and conclusions. Such issues force into question the trustworthiness of the results, and indeed how well we are using them.

Traffic simulation models and software tools have been developed for the purpose of traffic modelling, planning and to analyse different strategies in traffic control during simulations. Traffic simulation models and tools are increasingly used in real-time for traffic management with the use of area-wide online traffic data. A comparison of 17 simulation software tools has been conducted by analysing scientific papers and technical specifications. An online survey with the focus on realized functionalities and planned improvements has been conducted together with traffic simulation tool developers and product managers. Particular emphasis was placed on the flexibility and adaptively of real-time simulation solutions in the context of heterogeneous road networks (urban, interurban, rural) and other special requirements in non-mainstream regions. Traffic simulation is a widely used method applied in the research on traffic modelling, planning and development of traffic networks and systems. From the literature study, a variety traffic simulation models were found in experiments and applications with aims to imaginary real traffic operations. The traffic simulation models can be categorised into three namely, microscopic modelling, macroscopic modelling and mesoscopic modelling. This report is aimed to overview these traffic simulation models, in term of its function, limitation and application.
A development of a traffic simulator for urban road networks: AVENUE

This study develops AVENUE (an Advanced & Visual Evaluator for road Networks in Urban arEas). AVENUE incorporates a driver's route choice model and a traffic flow model that can reproduce over-saturated network conditions as well as under-saturated ones. The development of AVENUE is based on the object-oriented programming which affords flexible modifications to users' requirements and graphical environment for easy operations. This model was validated through an application to the Kinshicho area in Tokyo.

Development of large-scale traffic simulation models have always been challenging for transportation researchers. One of the essential steps in developing traffic simulation models, which needs lots of resources, is travel demand modeling. Therefore, proposing travel demand models that require less data than classical travel demand models is highly important, especially in large-scale networks. This paper first presents a travel demand model named as probabilistic travel demand model, then it reports the process of development, calibration and validation of Belgium traffic simulation model. The probabilistic travel demand model takes cities' population, distances between the cities, yearly vehicle-kilometer traveled, and yearly truck trips as inputs. The extracted origin-destination matrices are imported into the SUMO traffic simulator.
