Abstract
The Principality of Krotoszyn arises in 1819. The aristocratic family of Thurn and Taxis received it as a compensation for the loss of the postal monopoly over the territories in Prussia. These territories were in Greater Poland, which after the second partition of Poland at the end of the 18th century, came into possession of the Kingdom of Prussia. The present study analyses the rule of the Dukes of Thurn and Taxis and their administration instances in the Principality of Krotoszyn. The aims of the research are the analysis of the functional patterns, mechanisms, and the character of the princely form of government. It is, at the same time, a study about the most influential Mediatized House in the region of Greater Poland. Both, the activities of the Duke on-site, and the character of the princely administration from the regional perspective, are of interest. The analysis of the interactions between participants is based on individual examples. This method gave some hints about the form of government. Therefore, the study also includes socio-historical components. The aim was to examine the governance from a micro-historical perspective by focusing on the princely administration in the certain selected areas such as poor relief, fire fighting, relations with the associations (for example rifle clubs), the Prussian administrative bodies or different participants, and their approach to crisis situations. Referring to the governance, the journeys of the Dukes to the Principality of Krotoszyn are also described in detail. This research is at the same time a contribution to the history of Polish-German relations and the history of German nobility in the region of Greater Poland. The present study investigates the time period from the genesis of the Principality of Krotoszyn until its disintegration after the First World War. It is a pioneering study on this topic.
