Metaphorical Approaches in Meaning Architectural Production

IJRSR, 2018

This paper tries to look at the concept of metaphor for the formation of meaning in architectural production. The study follows a theoretical and analytical research method in order to develop discursive formation and an attempt is made to create a conceptual discussion environment through the samples. The qualitative data of the work are derived from the contemporary architectural literature. And the notion of metaphors is approached through selected examples of contemporary architecture and this concept is discussed through the implications of design. What is important here is the question of the relation of the metaphor to the whole architecture and how the metaphor should affect the architectural meaning. Or, in other words, how necessary and effective the metaphor is for the work to be understood by the reader and for the creation of an aesthetic clause. In this context, the question of how metaphor use plays a role in architectural production can be regarded as always questionable.

Architecture and Metaphor

Beirut Arab University Press, Printed and Distributed by Stephan Library, Beirut, Lebanon, 2016

This book investigates the relation between architecture and the linguistic phenomenon; (metaphor). Concept beyond architectural ideas is an important issue for audience of architects, students, and critics. This book considers a philosophical attempt trying to uncover secrets and hidden intentions of the 20th century architecture. From a literary perspective, it interprets multiple meanings of the architectural forms, which understood as the 'Metaphor' in architecture. From Postmodern Age until now, architecture has passed three phases of complexity I, II, and III. Architectural metaphors have witnessed rising in degree of complexity to be read and figured out. This book, therefore, collects fifteen examples of the most remarkable projects analyzing ideas of their architects and clarifying what they meant by their metaphoric representations. This book is expected to be used as a reader-cum-textbook for many architectural theory classes for the next generation of architects.

Context is not only the physical reality that sorrounds us but also the atmosphere which is able to evoke emotions giving us an aesthetic pleasure. Metaphor is atool that make this atmosphere cognizable in a rational way.

5086 Typology and Structural Analysis of Metaphors in Architectural Design : Semiotic Analysis and Generation of Metaphors in Architectural Design part1

2007

This study aims to develop the roles of metaphors in architectural designs. We chose 210 architectural works of art containing metaphors in “SHlNKENCHIKU "magazines, then construct the database for metaphors based on structure mapping theory. We analyze the types and the metaphorical structures of these architectural designs and try to describe how these metaphors work. The results are as follows; 1) Various metaphors are generated from the experience of natural and artificial objects. 2) There are three levels of metaphors; “attributive", “relative" and “semantic" metaphors. 3) We can describe the mechanism of creative architectural design process based on the metaphors.

Architecture: the Making of Metaphors

Studying the application of the metaphor the primary objective of this seminar is to enhance AIA member's practical day-to-day work to the more ideal aspects of architecture and architectural design. This seminar will provide members the opportunity to discuss architectural ideas and their meanings.

2009. Re-Viewing Space: Figurative Language in Architects' Assessment of Built Space:: Rosario Caballero, Mouton de Gruyter, Berlin/New York, 2006, 261 pp., …

Journal of Pragmatics, 2009

This book studies the use of figurative language in professional architects' discourse. Based on architectural reviews, i.e. aesthetic as well as technical assessments of building designs by peer architects, the author identifies, classifies, quantifies and describes the metaphors that architectural reviewers employ in their assessment of built artefacts. However, the main goal of this book is not only to discuss the metaphorical basis of a large amount of a professional community's jargon, but also to demonstrate the usefulness of adopting a genre vantage point to analyse and study metaphor, and to provide researchers with ''an analytical framework for exploring metaphor in professional communication' ' (p. 4). In this regard, the author combines insights from traditional conceptual metaphor theory with discourse analytic procedures to undertake the study of genre.

The role of metaphors in the formation of architectural identity

2012

As is the case in every other field of art, the purpose of architecture is to reveal a unique situation which has never been experienced before and broaden the feelings, thoughts and imagination of human beings. Considering that the concepts of identity and uniqueness are close enough to be used for the same meaning, the main purpose of architecture can be defined as designing a building which has a certain identity. Metaphors seem to be quite beneficial instruments compared to several other methods and approaches applied by architects in order to achieve this purpose. Design problems are defined as “wicked” problems which are too complex to be solved with completely linear, rational, logical methods and with a certain algorithm and require considering both objective and subjective aspects of the problem at the same time and with creativity. Metaphors, defined as “imaginative rationality” appear to be quite appropriate tools for solving such problems since they unite rationality and...

Architecture the making of metaphors AIA lecture

Studying the application of the metaphor the primary objective of this seminar is to enhance AIA member’s practical day-to-day work to the more ideal aspects of architecture and architectural design. This seminar will provide members the opportunity to discuss architectural ideas and their meanings. “Architecture: the making of metaphors” have four learning objectives: 1. Review the background and applicability of metaphors and building design 2. Review the interactive process of the common metaphor to the sovereign and non-publically interactive metaphor 3. Understand how the architectural metaphor works in building design and use. 4. Learn how metaphor of planes, scale, form, and building components improves design, reading, using and enjoying architectural design.

METAPHOR AS A BASIC MECHANISM OF ART (PAINTING

This article describes research on visual semantics, diff erent forms of metaphor used in rhetoric and philology (tropes: metonymy, hyperbole, litotes, oxymoron, and others), and images, which are metaphorical also. The research was carried out using paintings. The authors state that the function of metaphor is to transform the sense of the image from a psychological point of view.
