European Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
This work represents an automated solar-powered water pumping system for a fish farm located off-grid in a rural area of Pakistan. The ultrasonic water level sensor is used with the microcontroller Arduino UNO to automate the pumping system. The water level sensor is connected to the microcontroller based on the sensor programming and sensor data extraction from the water ponds of the fish farm. The microcontroller controls the water pump automatically to switch ON/OFF. This solution is very cost-effective for local farmers, and no human is needed on the site to monitor and operate the water pumping system for the fish farm. The designed system can reduce labor costs and effectively provide fish farms a smooth automated water pumping system.
Development of Aquaponic System using Solar Powered Control Pump
IOSR Journal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 2013
This paper describes the development of an aquaponic system using solar panel to control the water pump and air pump based on Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) technology. Solar power is ideally can be used in Malaysia due to location factor and also give the benefit to the environment as renewable energy. It involves a combination of electrical, electronics and agriculture into one sustainable system which consists of a solar panel, inverter, water pump and air pump. The solar panel is the most cleanest ways to produce electricity. With the average output voltage is 12V while the maximum output voltage produce by the solar panel is 18 V. The voltage depends on light capture by solar panel. Weather can minimize the light capture by solar panel thus affect the overall performance. This project requires a substitution power grid with green energy from solar panel which an inverter is used to convert Direct Current (DC) to Alternate Current (AC) and to step up 12V to 110V or 240V. A microcontroller is used to control the operation of an aquaponic system for switching water pump, air pump, battery charge and discharge state. Based on observation, the output power from inverter has produced 65.55% efficiency and the average output voltage of the solar panel is 16.16 V.

Temperature control presents a high cost for recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). It is necessary to find a solution that would save energy in RAS. A heat balance for recirculating aquaculture system was developed on python program and a heat predicting model on graphic interface user (GUI) was produced with the given name of RAS designer and operation assistant. The model can predict precisely the heat energy required to be added or removed to maintain the water temperature at optimum water temperature to guarantee fish welfare and productivity. The model was validated by comparing predicted heat energy to actual heat energy. The model can predict the total annual, monthly, daily, hourly and extreme condition heating requirements, solar radiation, and water temperature. The predicted temperature of the water in the tank by the model ranged from 21.96 ºC to 33.26 ºC with an average of 27.92 ºC ± 1.34 ºC. on the other hand the actual temperature of the water in the tank ranged from 22.20ºC to 30.90ºC with an average of 28.41 ºC ± 1.16 ºC. The model gives good and promising results that are relatively realistic.

Solar Photovoltaic power generation is fast gaining popularity in Kenya. However, the effects of high cell temperatures continue to be a major hindrance to their efficiency especially for standalone systems. Water can be used for cooling when combined with thermoelectric generators (TEG) in areas where it is available achieving double gains. Kisumu Nyalenda, in Kenya is one such site where weather and irradiance data have been collected for the design of a PV+TEG power generation system. In this paper, a 3-tier study is conducted to evaluate TEG power, voltage, current and temperature distribution and the overall performance of the hybrid system. Numerical simulations are conducted on Matlab Simulink platform model based on a medium temperature gradient (10 0 C - 100 0 C) category TEG. Bench study setups are done replicating the weather and irradiation conditions of a Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) in Nyalenda Kisumu. The TEG bench results are then used to guide the design o...
Solar Thermal Aquaculture System Controller Based on Artificial Neural Network
Engineering, 2011
Temperature is one of the most principle factors affects aquaculture system. The water temperature is very important parameter for shrimp growth. It can cause stress and mortality or superior environment for growth and reproduction. The required temperature for optimal growth is 34˚C, if temperature increase up to 38˚C it causes death of the shrimp, so it is important to control water temperature. Solar thermal water heating system is designed to supply an aquaculture pond with the required hot water in Mersa Matruh in Egypt as presented in this paper. This paper introduces a complete mathematical modeling and MATLAB SIMULINK model for the solar thermal aquaculture system. Moreover the paper presents the control of pond water temperature using artificial intelligence technique. Neural networks are massively parallel processors that have the ability to learn patterns through a training experience. Because of this feature, they are often well suited for modeling complex and non-linear processes such as those commonly found in the heating system. They have been used to solve complicated practical problems. The simulation results indicate that, the control unit success in keeping water temperature constant at the desired temperature by controlling the hot water flow rate.
Fuzzy Logic Controller based on geothermal recirculating aquaculture system
The Egyptian Journal of Aquatic Research, 2014
One of the most common uses of geothermal heat is in recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) where the water temperature is accurately controlled for optimum growing conditions for sustainable and intensive rearing of marine and freshwater fish. This paper presents a design for RAS rearing tank and brazed heat exchanger to be used with geothermal energy as a source of heating water. The heat losses from the RAS tank are calculated using Geo Heat Center Software. Then a plate type heat exchanger is designed using the epsilon -NTU analysis method. For optimal growth and abundance of production, a Fuzzy Logic control (FLC) system is applied to control the water temperature (29°C). A FLC system has several advantages over conventional techniques; relatively simple, fast, adaptive, and its response is better and faster at all atmospheric conditions. Finally, the total system is built in MATLAB/SIMULINK to study the overall performance of control unit.
Analysis of a Solar PV System for Aeration System in Aquaculture
2018
Artificial fish ponds harvester often face the problem of lacking the oxygen content in ponds. If there is too much oxygen, fish can even get sick. This will result in a great reduction of income for fish harvesters. Solar aeration can play a vital role in improving the water quality by removing dissolved gases. This aeration system can be applicable where electricity is not available .This paper discusses the feasibility of solar aeration system in rural places of Bangladesh. Homer software was used to simulate the aeration system for small scale ponds of a place called Godagari, Rajshahi. It was found that the optimal sizing of photovoltaic 2 kW, 2 battery of 400 Ah and inverter of 0.6 kW and Cost of energy is about 0.463 $/kWh which is 37.04 taka in BDT (1 US=80).
Recirculating Aquaculture Tank Production Systems Management of Recirculating Systems
and growing fish have been used by fisheries researchers for more than three decades. Attempts to advance these systems to commercial scale food fish production have increased dramatically in the last decade. The renewed interest in recirculating systems is due to their perceived advantages, including: greatly reduced land and water requirements; a high degree of environmental control allowing year-round growth at optimum rates; and the feasibility of locating in close proximity to prime markets. Unfortunately, many commercial systems, to date, have failed because of poor design, inferior management, or flawed economics. This publication will address the problems of managing a recir-culating aquaculture system so that those contemplating investment can make informed decisions. For information on theory and design of recirculating systems refer to SRAC Publication Recirculating systems are mechanically sophisticated and biologically complex. Component failures, poor water quality, st...
Simulation of a low-cost method for solar-heating an aquaculture pond
Energy in Agriculture, 1981
A greenhouse computer model was used to predict the temperature change of a solarheated aquaculture pond that is insulated with a double layer of transparent plastic film suspended over the pond. The results showed that a 9 ° C rise in water temperature can be achieved in January in Phoenix, AZ. This implies that such covers could allow year-round aquaculture production in Phoenix and other southern U.S. areas. Furthermore, the economics of a covered nursery pond operation appear particularly attractive.
