Manually Operated Coconut Dehusking Machine for Rural Agriculturist

Dehusking of coconut is the major work after harvesting the coconut from the coconut plant. In existing manual dehusking methods available equipment's causes injury to the personal [1]. Also, it gives husk, which is important material for coir processing industry. Considering the drawbacks of electrical/hydraulic dehusking methods such as power requirement, high initial cost etc., and manual coconut dehusker has been developed and the machine has a provision to dehusk all sizes of nuts. The major parts of manually operated coconut dehusker are blades, L- rod, disc lever, table, spring. Dehusking table is provided with three set of teeth's, which are opened and closed when operated with bottom disc plate. The teeth are placed 120 degree with each other in circular arrangement to accommodate the all sizes of coconuts. The main objective of this machine is to remove the coconut shell and to eliminate the skilled labour involved in dehusking. The coconut outer shell is a fibrous husk one to two inches thick. This paper deals with the design and fabrication of pneumatic operated coconut dehusking machine. This project is aimed at producing an efficient and more economical machine for coconut industry. The coconut is known for its great versatility as seen in many domestic, commercial, and industrial uses of its different parts. Coconuts are different from any other fruits because they contain large quantity of tender and when immature they are known as tender-nuts or jelly-nuts and may be harvested for drinking. When they mature they still contain some water and can be used as seed nuts or processed to give oil from the kernel, charcoal from hard shell and coir from fibrous husk. One traditional method used for coconut dehusking is using a machete. This is done by using human energy. This method is risky and tedious and yet requires skills. Hence an alternative is suggested in our project which reduces time involved in coconut dehusking and human effort. Depending upon the survey different sizes of coconut are determined. The machine is designed to accommodate different sizes of the coconut that are cultivated anywhere in the world.

Development and Performance Evaluation of Coconut Dehusking Machine

-Contrary to the immense economic importance of coconut for both industrial and domestic uses, dehusking of the fruits after harvesting constitutes the most difficult and dangerous operations during processing. Performance evaluation of coconut dehusking machine was carried out. The machine was designed and fabricated using locally sourced materials. It consists of the supporting frame where the machine components were mounted. The de-husking unit consists of two galvanized steel pipe rollers with spikes and shafts. The driving and driven roller shafts are mild steel rods supported at both ends by ball bearings. Six spur gears were used with various pitch circle diameters and number of teeth respectively, and were attached proportionally to the driving and driven roller based on their functions in the machine. The flywheel is driven by a pinion which is attached to pulley and connected with a V-belt to the pulley of the electric motor, and rotates at the same speed with the driving gear. Two middle gears mounted on the same shaft with the flywheel were also incorporated to produce high torque. When the motor is switch on, power is transmitted through the gearing arrangement to the rollers with plurality of spikes and rotate them in opposite directions towards the center there by causing both the gripping and tearing of the husk when coconut is placed in between the rollers. While the rollers rotate, a feeding clamp welded to the frame is used to feed coconut fruit in the de-husking unit and a spring is attached to enable relative motion between the coconut fruit and the rollers during de-husking. Different sizes of coconut fruits were loaded at different times on the machine and the time taken for each fruit to be dehusked was recorded. A total of 80 fresh nuts were tested. The performance evaluation shows that the average efficiency of the machine was 92.50% while the average capacity is 120.6 coconuts per hour. On the other hand, the percentage number of distorted and broken coconuts were 7.5% and 3.75%. These figures are however infinitesimal Compare to the existing coconut dehusking machines. Hence it is recommended for use by farmers.

Design And Development Of A Motorized Coconut Dehusking Machine

The motorized coconut dehusking machine was designed using AutoCAD and made of locally available materials using local manufacturing technology and tested to evaluate its performance in terms of dehusking capacity, de-husking efficiency, percent nut damage and energy consumption at different angular speed of dehusking rollers and nominal diameter of nuts; three levels of dehusking roller’s angular speeds (50 rpm, 60 rpm and 70 rpm) and three levels of nuts’ nominal diameters (178 mm, 212 mm and 248 mm) were used. The study was laid-out in two-factorial experiment in randomized complete block design. Performance Characteristics of a Coconut Dehusking Machine

A coconut dehusking machine was developed and evaluated in terms of dehusking performance. The model consists of different component assembly parts such as speed reduction, transmission, coconut base, dehusking blade, frame, and control system. It is powered by a 7.5 hp gasoline engine and with an average output capacity of 240 coconut per hour. Its salient features which give it an edge over other existing machines in attaining effective dehusking are as follows: 1) a dehusking blade with cutting tooth and blade side face angle, 2) movable coconut base assembly, 3) ability to remove husks starting at the basal portion, which is the softest part of the coconut, and 4) operable by a single person. Coconut is one of the important ingredients in Indian household. It is widely used for cooking and also for the extraction of coconut oil. Though coconut is used widely in all parts of India, dehusking of coconut is not an easy task. Husk in botany is the outer shell or coating of a seed. It often may refer to the leafy outer covering of a coconut. Literally, a husk or hull includes the protective outer covering of a seed, fruit or vegetable. The dehusking machine is capable of removing husk from the coconut in an easy way and also time consumption is very less when compared to manual process. The model consists of a motor, gear arrangement, rollers with spikes, and a pressing plate.

Development of Coconut De-husking Machine

Generally, coconuts are de-husked manually using a machete or a spike. These methods require skilled labour and are laborious to use. Attempts made so far in the development of de-husking tools have only been partially successful and not effective in replacing manual methods. Considering, the drawbacks of manual de-husking of manual de-husking methods, existing automated de-husker, power operated coconut de-husking machine was developed. The power operated coconut de-husking machines operates on 1hp electric motor. It consists of main parts like frame, electric motor, speed reduction unit and de-husking unit. Single person is required for operating the de-husker. It can be operated by unskilled labour. Cost benefit analysis indicates that it should be commercially valuable.
