A Statistical Analysis of Book Publishing Industry in Ukraine: 1917–2017

Statistika Ukraïni, 2019

A broad statistical analysis of the book publishing industry over 1917-2017 is performed, with focus on the dynamics of industry indicators in 1991-2017. It is shown that throughout this period the average annual growth in the number of books and brochures produced by the book publishing industry made 620 units, or 5.13%. But the circulation had overall negative dynamics: its average annual decline made 3310 thousand, or 3.9%. The largest absolute decline in the circulation is recorded in 1993, 1999, and 2015. It is revealed that the per capita output in the industry was 1.5 books in 2013, 0.8 in 2015, and 1.1 in 2017. It is stressed that because books constitute a culture component and contribute in the moral enrichment of the society and book reading enhance the education level of a nation, the book supply of the population observed throughout the period of the Ukraine's independence is unacceptable. A fact raising concern is that reading ranks fifth as a way of recreation in the Ukrainian society. It is demonstrated that the assumption about minor significance of a printed book in the digital era is fallacious and ungrounded. Transformations in science and technology, politics or economy have been persisting in Ukraine, but its people remain to be book readers. A book may change the format or production methods and materials, but a book is an integral attribute of the humanity. The events in Ukraine, both positive and negative, had strong impact on the development and change of socioeconomic paradigms, which had implications for the book publishing industry. The development of any industry cannot be considered in isolation, by taking its dynamics off the context of socio-political processes and phenomena. It is shown that in the present-day conditions, when the living standards of the population are largely dependent on the salary rate or the household income, the need to purchase books had lower priority than meeting vital necessities of daily life. The importance of a further in-depth study of the external factors with impact on the industry development is stressed.

A cross comparison with the book publishing industry

Notwithstanding the recent increasing interest in creative industries (CIs), very few studies are dealing with a new and emerging topic like technological innovation. In CIs, innovation is in general considered from a single viewpoint: a means to develop new creative contents. One very important issue is surprisingly neglected: this is the technological innovations and, therefore, the characteristic and the management of R&D in the CIs. The present paper aims at understanding where R&D takes place in the book publishing sector, which economic actors are taking charge of it, where they are located in the value chain, how they are articulated with content producers.

Publishing in a Digital Era: An Analysis of the Norwegian Publishing Industry

Executive Summary: This master’s thesis researches the Norwegian book publishing industry, and the capabilities of incumbent publishers in ensuring long-term competitiveness and industry health. The impact of digitalization and the disruptive potential it presents to the publishing industry is the phenomenon deeming the thesis relevant. Departing from the resource-based view, the thesis applies dynamic capabilities theory in the creation of an initial framework investigating whether incumbent publishers have the capabilities required in a dynamic context characterized by digitalization. The initial framework emphasize that capabilities related to sensing market changes, seizing opportunities, and managing threats and reconfigurations are needed to succeed in the future publishing industry. However, distinctive aspects of the Norwegian publishing industry are highlighted: the Book Agreement legitimizing retail price maintenance, the level of vertical integration, and a standardization of contracts with authors. The distinctive aspects contribute to incumbents dominating the industry, and are analyzed to constitute sources of inertia. Consequently, dynamic capabilities theory is found insufficient in explaining how incumbent Norwegian publishers are to be relevant in a digital era. Thus, the need for a new framework emerges, resulting in the application of ecosystem and activity system theory. The subsequent analysis shows that thinking of publishing as an ecosystem reveals the potentially detrimental effect of leveraging bottlenecks and extracting, rather than sharing, value. On the same note, incumbent publishers are found to be dominators in the activity system, although they have the capability of coordinating activities in their network. The findings require the need for reframing the publishing industry in order to reveal the potential of thinking of the publishing business model in new terms. The contribution of the thesis is that aspects related to openness and flexibility are what is deemed necessary for incumbent publishers to stay relevant in the digital era. However, important to note is that the contribution is not to be considered definitive, as there are important aspects to the book industry in general, e.g. the promotion of national literature, which is not considered in the thesis. Nevertheless, the thesis aims to be a source of inspiration to incumbent publishers and industry stakeholders alike, as it casts new light on a traditional and important national industry.

Multidimensional impact assessment of a large collection of books using PlumX: methodology, technical limitations and indicators analysis [Complementary material to manuscript]

2017

The main purpose of this macro-study is to shed light on the broad impact of books. For this purpose, the impact a very large collection of books (more than 200,000) has been analysed by using PlumX, an analytical tool providing a great number of different metrics provided by various tools. Furthermore, the study focuses on the evolution of the most significant measures and indicators over time. The results show usage counts in comparison to the other metrics are quantitatively predominant. Catalogue holdings and reviews represent a book's most characteristic measures deriving from its increased level of impact in relation to prior results. Our results also corroborate the long half-life of books within the scope of all metrics, excluding views and social media. Despite of some disadvantages, PlumX has proved to be a very helpful and promising tool for assessing the broad impact of books, especially because of how easy it is to enter the ISBN directly as well as its algorithm to aggregate all the data generated by the different ISBN variations.
