Volatility in Cryptocurrency Market–Before and During Covid-19 Pandemic
CIU Journal, 2020
This paper aims to measure the nature of volatility in the cryptocurrency market before and during Covid-19 pandemic period. To achieve this goal, the Wald test, Granger Causality and Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (1,1) have been applied considering the daily US dollar dominated closing prices of 15 leading cryptocurrencies and volatility index (VIX- CBOE) from 1 January, 2019 to 5 June, 2020. The presence of structural breaks in all the selected cryptocurrencies is observed which result in erroneous forecasting in cryptocurrency market. The small size of cryptocurrency market hinders the risk diversification. It is further noticed that cryptocurrencies are exposed to the systematic bubble risks and therefore it is very unpredictable. Inclusion of cryptocurrencies in the portfolio along with conventional instruments like stocks, bonds, precious metals, commodities, and paper currencies may gear up the overall return on investment and increase the possibility of risk diversification if necessary investment precautions are taken.
The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Volatility of Cryptocurrencies
International Journal of Financial Studies
This study aimed to investigate the interactions between Bitcoin to euro, gold, and STOXX50 during the period of COVID-19. First, a bibliometric analysis based on the R package was applied to highlight the research trends in the field during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. While investigating the effects of the pandemic on Bitcoin, the number of cases of COVID-19 was used as a proxy. Using daily data for the period 1 March 2020 to 3 March 2020 and based on a vector autoregressive model, impulse response, and variance decomposition were utilized to analyze the dynamic relationships among the variables. The results revealed that the COVID-19 cases and gold hurt the exchange rate of Bitcoin to euro, while there was great volatility regarding the response of Bitcoin to a shock of STOXX50. The Granger causality test was constructed to investigate the relationships among the variables. The results show the presence of unidirectional causality running from new cases to STOXX50 and fro...

The uncertainty originated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the unpredictability of both real and financial market indicators have increased the volatility of global financial markets. As a result of globalization, the determination of risk and information transfer between financial markets has gained importance during the pandemic process. In this context, the spread of volatility between the cryptocurrency market and the global stock markets was analyzed by considering the pandemic process. Bitcoin, which represents 42% of the total market cap, was used to represent the cryptocurrency market in the analysis. S&P500, FTSE100, SSEC and NIKKEI indices, which are among the world's leading indices in terms of market cap, were used to represent the global stock market. Constant Conditional Correlation Multivariate GARCH model was used for the analysis of volatility transmission. Daily closing prices covering the date range from 1st December 2019 to 1st July 202 were used for the analyses. The model results were positive and significant for all predicted conditional correlation parameters. In this context, there is volatility transmission and information transfer between BTC and stock returns. The model findings are expected to be a supporting element for financial market participants to make the right decision in the optimal portfolio allocation process.
IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON PRICE VOLITALITY OF CRYPTOCURRENCY
IAEME PUBLICATION, 2021
In this research the association between COVID-19 and the price volatility of cryptocurrency has been studied. The talk about COVID-19 has been there since almost the start of 2020 after badly affecting the health of the people of Wuhan, China and then spreading around the world causing the countries around the World to enforce a lockdown. Due to this, many economies got affected leading to destruction and downward movement in majority of the industries. In this study, an attempt has been made to check if COVID-19 has had an influence on the price volatility of cryptocurrencies focusing on four of them which include, BITCOIN, LITECOIN, XRP(RIPPLE) and ETHEREUM by using the prices of all four from 10th August 2016 to 10th August 2020. In order to check if the leverage effect is present or not, EGARCH model is used. The findings of the study show that leverage effect on the price volatility is present for LITECOIN, XRP(RIPPLE) and ETHEREUM but not for BITCOIN.

The purpose of this paper is to reinvestigate the properties of cryptocurrencies in the COVID-19 crisis as well as their co-movements with different asset classes including different stock markets, bonds, real estate, gold and oil. To capture the change in correlation caused by crisis, we employ multivariate GARCH Dynamic Conditional Correlation model. The findings suggest that cryptocurrencies can be seen no more than a diversifier for most of the assets. For real estate and S&P500 it is confirmed to be a weak hedge, while positive and upward sloping dynamic conditional correlations with gold obtained in COVID-19 period needs to be further investigated.
The Contagion Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic on Cryptocurrencies
Humanities & Social Sciences Reviews
Purpose of the Study: In this research, the association between the COVID-19 pandemic and cryptocurrencies' price volatility has been examined. Methodology: To check the contagion effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the price volatility of cryptocurrencies: BITCOIN, LITECOIN, XRP(RIPPLE), and ETHEREUM, the prices of all four are deployed from 10th August 2016 to 10th August 2020. The exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (EGARCH) model is used to check the leverage effect exists or not. Stata 16 has been used to execute all the tests. Main Findings: The study's findings indicated that the leverage effect on the price volatility is present for LITECOIN, XRP(RIPPLE), and ETHEREUM but not for BITCOIN. Applications of the study: This study is significant for investors to develop strategies for investments and secure the transactions and control the creation of additional currency units. Also, it gives insight to the policy and decision-makers to arti...

This study is conducted to investigate the potential volatilities and interdependencies among cryptocurrencies during global health crises, i.e., during COVID-19. The top five cryptocurrencies have been selected to assess their interdependencies. These currencies have been ranked as the top five due to their highest market capitalization. These top five currencies are Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, USD coin, and BNB. Monthly data for these currencies from the first month of 2019 to eighth month of 2022 is taken from online sources by investing.com. Squared deviations from mean values have been taken as measures of volatilities. These measures are simple but more precise to capture the possibility of potential interrelations in the volatilities of cryptocurrencies through regression analysis. The results of this study showed that the volatility of each cryptocurrencies involved is interlinked with the volatility of at least one other cryptocurrencies.
The Effect of COVID-19 Transmission on Cryptocurrencies
Risks
In recent years, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and Dogecoin have emerged as important asset classes in general, and diversification and hedging instruments in particular. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has provided the chance to examine and assess cryptocurrencies’ behavior during extremely stressful times. The methodology of this study is based on an estimate using the ARDL model from 22 January 2020 to 12 March 2021, allowing us to analyze the long-term and short-term relationship between cryptocurrencies and COVID-19. Our results demonstrate that there is cointegration between the chosen cryptocurrencies in the market and COVID-19. The results indicate that Bitcoin, ETH, and DOGE prices were affected by COVID-19, which means that the pandemic seriously affected the three cryptocurrency prices.

In this paper, we attempt to understand and identify the cyclical fluctuations in cryptocurrency markets. To this end, we apply the Markov-Switching approach on daily prices of 17 selected digital currencies. This model allows us to capture the nonlinear structure in cryptocurrencies' prices. The empirical results clearly show potential difference(s) among digital currencies when they react to the varying levels of the pandemic's severity. The existence of two distinguishable states and each state seems to be characterized by different features of market cycle's phase for each cryptocurrency. So, the Covid19 pandemic affects asymmetrically the different market phases of digital currencies. Such findings can have insightful portfolios implications.
