Gut contents of anuran larva (Elachistocleis bicolor, Chaunus schneideri, Odontophrynus americanus, Scinax fuscovarius, and S. granulatus) that coexist in a semi-permanent waterbody from Iguazú National Park (Misiones, Argentina) was analyzed. Our objective was analyse the gut contents of different tadpole species that coexist in the same water body during seasons of minimum and maximum precipitation, to increase the knowledge of the natural history of these tadpoles. Elachistocleis bicolor (obligate-suspension-feeder) it presents only planktonic algae in its gut (92%). In gut of S. fuscovarius and S. granulatus (nektonic) planktonic algae were abundant, especially in the rainy season (14 and 41%). The guts of C. schneideri and O. americanus (benthic) showed sediments (55 % and 17.5%) and vegetable fibers (33 and 61%). The largest particle size (< 100 µm) was found in the guts of C. schneideri and the smallest (< 25 µm) in O. americanus and E. bicolor.

Scinax angrensis (LUTZ, 1973) is an endemic species, which occurs in low altitude hillside forests, distributed from the municipalities of Mangaratiba to Parati in the south of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The aim of this study was to compare the morphology of Scinax angrensis tadpoles in two different stages of development, and verify their feeding spectrum. The mouth morphology of the two stages studied (27 and 37) appeared similar, with an increase in the size of the oral opening as well as an increase in the dimensions of the body. The examined species presented a trophic spectrum comprised of algae, protozoan, rotifers, microcrustaceans, nematodes, vegetation and invertebrate remains, fungus hyphae, and sand grains. The intensification of agriculture has led an important loss of natural habitats, with significant consequences for biodiversity. In this sense, the studies on anuran amphibian tadpoles inhabiting these environments are relevant, because the larval stage is a phase of population regulation. The aim of this study was to analyze the diet in Physalaemus biligonigerus tadpoles, an anuran species widely distributed in South America and that inhabit agroecosystems. Three sites were sampled; two agroecosystems with different alteration degrees (AG1 and AG2) and an uncultured (SM) third place. The captured tadpoles were anesthetized, fixed and preserved in formaldehyde (10%). Subsequently, the complete intestine was removed and analyzed for food items under a binocular microscope. We determined spatial and temporal distribution of tadpoles in 11 breeding habitats from Morro do Diabo State Park (MDSP), southeastern Brazil. Breeding habitats occupancy by tadpoles was tested to be different from a null model of random placement of species. We also tested whether tadpole occupancy in a given breeding habitat is organized according to different ecomorphological guilds, and we analyzed spatial partitioning of tadpoles among breeding habitats through similarity analysis. For temporal analysis we analyzed temporal partitioning of tadpole monthly occurrence also using similarity analysis, and assessed what climatic variable better predicts tadpole temporal occurrence in the MDSP, through regression analysis. Among tadpoles from 19 anuran species, distribution was different from a null model, but co-occurrence patterns among the breeding habitats did not differ among different guilds. However, breeding habitats with similar hydroperiods had similar species composition, which may be related to the reproduction patterns of species. Among the three climatic variables analyzed (rainfall, temperature, and photoperiod), temporal occurrence of monthly tadpole richness and abundance was correlated with temperature and rainfall. Most species were found only during the rainy season months, and overlap occurred within three groups of species. Thus, temporal distribution does not seem to be an important mechanism in species segregation at the MDSP, where the dry season is pronounced. In this case, spatial partitioning tends to be more important for species coexistence.

Abstract: Tadpoles are abundant in the environments in which they occur and remain in aquatic habitats for longer periods than adults, being relatively easier to collect. Despite the increase in tadpole research in the past decade, our understanding of its morphological diversity remains limited. Here, we provide morphological characterizations for larvae of 15 anuran species that occur at Emas National Park (ENP) and its surroundings, in Goiás, and compare them with descriptions available in the literature for other locations. We also present an update of the list of anuran species known to the ENP, based on tadpole sampling. We found tadpoles from 15 anuran species, of which five represent new records for the park. TROPICAL TADPOLE ASSEMBLAGES: WHICH FACTORS AFFECT THEIR STRUCTURE AND DISTRIBUTION
Tropical tadpoles may occur in a range of aquatic habitats, from tree holes (e.g., fitolimns), to permanent ponds and streams. Thus, tadpoles are exposed to a different sort of biotic and abiotic factors, according to the habitat they develop, and these factors may also vary over time. What are these factors? What are their relevance for the distribution of tadpole species and local assemblages? How do they affect the structure of tadpole assemblages? In this review, we explore these questions and recognize some trends regarding the factors influencing tropical tadpole assemblages. We can recognize at least nine major trends regarding the distribution and structure of tropical tadpole assemblages: (1) stream size and microhabitat diversity are important abiotic features influencing species richness and composition; (2) in ponds, the permanence gradient (e.g., hydroperiod), and the heterogeneity of habitat are the main factors modeling tropical tadpole assemblages; (3) species composition seems to be a more relevant assemblage parameter than species richness and should be first considered when planning conservation of both pond and stream-dwelling anurans; (4) predation seems to be the most important biotic interaction structuring tropical tadpole assemblages, with vertebrate predators (e.g., fishes) being more voracious in permanent habitats, while invertebrates (e.g., odonate naiads) are the most important in temporary ones; (5) tadpoles may play a regulatory effect preying upon anuran eggs and recently hatched tadpoles (6) microhabitat use varies in function of breeding habitat choice by adults, presence of predators, phylogeny, stage of development and heterogeneity of the habitat; (7) historical factors restrict the breeding habitats that species may use, and impose behavioral and physiologic constrains; (8) temporal variation in biotic (e.g., risk factors) and abiotic factors (e.g., rainfall distribution), and the reproductive patterns of the species may interfere in the structure of tropical tadpole assemblages, and (9) food resource partitioning in tadpole assemblages may both be or not linked to microhabitat occupation, feeding behavior, and morphology. Future efforts regarding the study of tadpoles should contemplate assemblages associated with streams, and experimental studies. RESUMO ASSEMBLEIAS DE GIRINOS TROPICAIS: QUAIS FATORES AFETAM SUA ESTRUTURA E DISTRIBUIÇÃO? Os girinos tropicais ocorrem em uma variedade de habitats aquáticos. Os girinos são expostos a diferentes conjuntos de fatores (bióticos, abióticos), de acordo com o habitat em que vivem, os quais também podem variar temporalmente. Quais são esses fatores? Qual a sua relevância sobre a distribuição das assembleias de girinos? Como eles afetam a sua organização? Nesta revisão, exploramos essas questões e reconhecemos algumas tendências associadas aos fatores que influenciam as assembleias de girinos tropicais. Little consensus exists on the role of food partitioning in the organization of tadpole assemblages. We studied trophic ecology of syntopic tadpoles through the analysis of gut contents, selectivity, and stable isotopes to assess the occurrence of food partitioning in tadpole assemblages. Tadpoles (n = 194) were collected in three wetlands and corresponded to four species: Elachistocleis bicolor (Eb), Scinax nasicus (Sn), Physalaemus albonotatus (Pa), and Dendropsophus sp. (D); and belonged to four ecomorphological groups (EMGs): suspension feeders (Eb), nektonic (Sn), benthic (Pa) and macrophagous (D). Sn, and Pa showed low selective diet and a wider trophic spectrum than Eb and D, which mainly consumed one or two food categories. Diet overlap was higher between Sn and Pa. Still, Sn and Pa presented some differences in the food resources consumed. Stable isotopes analysis showed that Eb, Sn, and Pa had a lower trophic position than D, explained by the high contribution of animal food oligochaete in D diet, in contrast to the importance of algae in the diet of Eb, Sn, and Pa. Diet specialization of some species, combined with the low dietary and isotopic overlap among the ecomorphological groups, suggests that trophic partitioning facilitates coexistence of syntopic tadpoles.
