An Analysis of ESL Students' Segmental Phonemes in Pronunciation Class
Significance of Teaching the Pronunciation of Segmental and Suprasegmental Features of English
Interdisciplinary Research in Education, 2021
Pronunciation is an essential and rudimentary facet of language involved in an oral communication. This article attempts to highlight the significance of teaching the pronunciationof segmental and suprasegmental features of English. The segmental features involve consonant and vowel sounds or phonemes, whereas the suprasegmental features include stress, rhythm, intonation, pitch, length etc. The central function of a language is for communication through speech. The speech is sequences of the pronunciation of segmental as well as suprasegmental features. At least, legible pronunciation is essential for anunderstandable communication. Legible pronunciation of any one of Standard British English (SBE), Scottish Standard English and General American English (GAE) is indispensable for the proper and effective oral communication in the global context. Standard British English (SBE) is normally used in context of teaching English to the students in Nepal. It is a difficult task to teach t...

Making improvements of the speech feature is possible to do because pronunciation is teachable. Some experts in pronunciation teaching have suggested more comprehensive and contemporary teaching methods and techniques. In narrower context to English Study Program some seemingly cases are found in depicting the condition of how the last semester students who attend thesis seminar are tend to have difficulty in their Pronunciation. Many of them are still struggling in articulating the correct English pronunciation. The problematic speech features are targeted to the segmental part, such as the accuracy of vowel sounds production. For this particular research, the researchers want to investigate the similar problematic features of pronunciation of the second semester students of English Study Program of Universitas Brawijaya and later will try to implement some teaching pronunciation techniques to modify their pronunciation production. For this particular research employs a qualitative...

This study was conducted to examine some error-provoking areas of English pronunciation for Iranian EFL learners. More specifically, it was meant to determine if there was any difference among learners of different proficiency levels in the areas of problematic consonantal features, the vowel schwa, and suprasegmental features. Thirty male learners ranging in age from 14 to 21 at the three levels of proficiency participated in this study. The instrument used to gather the data was an oral test based on some passages containing the problematic pronunciation areas. The passages were extracted from the learners’ course books. The learners were individually asked to read the texts aloud. The recorded learners’ voices were scored on a five rating scale. The analysis of data revealed that learners’ level of proficiency was a determining factor regarding their production of consonantal features (θ, ð, w, initial consonant clusters) and the vowel schwa (ә), but it did not have any impact on the production of stress patterns, and intonation contours. The researchers provide some suggestions to improve the pronunciation ability of EFL learners in general and Iranian EFL learners in particular.
Segmental Aspects of Pronunciation Errors Produced by ELE Students in Classroom Settings
Journal of Language and Literature Studies
Pronunciation plays important roles in making the intelligibility of a speech. In pronunciation, speech and gesture production are interrelated and coordinated. Not all language learners can pronounce English words well. Learners make errors while speaking English. It make them not confident to pronounce other English words. Therefore, this study aims to identify students’ segmental aspects of pronunciation errors in classroom setting. This study is categorized as qualitative study to understand phenomena using data such as interviews, observations, and documents reviews to identify and interpret specific characteristics of the material to learn human behavior. The population of this research is the sixth-semester students of English department at Mandalika University of Education, Mataram-Indoneisa. This research used purposive sampling method that engaged of 6 students as the sample of the data. The students divided by 2 criteria: Gender and pronunciation level. To make the data v...
Investigating the effective strategies for teaching pronunciation
International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research and Growth Evaluation, 2023
Teaching English pronunciation strategies is very important and valuable in the English language, which in our country doesn’t have any proper strategies for teaching English pronunciation to English students because of these reasons most of the students have difficulties in learning English pronunciation. And using this strategy can solve the students’ problems. It also makes it easier for the language teachers to teach English pronunciation in a successful and reasonable matter. According to Mortimer (1997), English pronunciation strategies are very important and valuable in English language. Therefore, the tittle of my research is about investigating the effective strategies for teaching pronunciation at English Department of Sarepol University. Quantitative research method is used in this research. The populations of sample of this research consist of 100 students from different class of English Department of Sarepol University. This minor study aims at describing learners’ features of pronunciation in terms of their suprasegmental aspects found in their speech. Students were asked to read aloud a text entitled The Gorilla Joke from the © BBC British Council 2006. Students oral narrations were then analysed in terms of their intonation pattern and stress assignment in sentence level. A metrical analysis was also used to show how students produced their speech rhythm. The result of the analysis shows that given the same text to read students may produce various combination of intonation patterns. Students also misplaced stress within the syllables or assigned no stress at all. Based on the metrical phonology analysis, learners did not assign foot timely based on the timing units in connected speeches. The speech production is more like a broken speech. Students also neglected the morphophonemics rules in which they did not produce the appropriate allomorphs [t], [d], and [id] in the past participle words....

"This paper is a case study that identified the segmental features observable among and modeled by three professors in a state university in the Philippines (where Tagalog is the native language), in their reading of a poem. In reference to General American English (GAE) which Filipino speakers of English attempt to approximate, generalizations out of the data and pedagogical implications were derived. The sociolectal approach in describing phonological features of a particular speech community was employed in this paper. Results revealed that substitution, addition and deletion of sound segments are governed by the interference of L1 and caused by the fossilization of pronunciation “lapses” of the participants. These lapses can therefore be regarded as defining features of the variety of English spoken by speakers in the area and perhaps its neighboring provinces since the participants serve as models in the community. In view of this, teachers of English should strengthen the Communicative Competence Model in the teaching of the language in order to make students be sensitive and appreciative of varieties of English such as the one noted in this paper."

There are plenty of articles and papers focusing on second language learning and its methods; however, very few studies can be found to investigate the pronunciation problems of undergraduate students. In addition, understanding pronunciation is an important part of communicative competence. It is widely approved that students should master pronunciation to be able to grasp the language adequately; moreover, many solutions have been carried out. Yet, students should find out the problems to be able to fix the issues. The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems non-native speakers of English have, especially undergraduate students. Students with better and acceptable pronunciation can easily improve their other language skills than those with weak pronunciation. Throughout the study, university students were used as the tool to investigate the problems and later suggestions, recommendations, and solutions were given based on the data the researcher found. In this research two methods of data collection were used; qualitative (Interview) and quantitative (Questionnaire) were used on Charmo University / English Department Students.
