Cyber security in internet of things

Review of Computer Engineering Studies

Internet has become a vital part of our lives. The number of internet connected devices are increasing every day and approximate there will be 34 billion IoT devices by 2020. It is observed that security is very weak in these devices and they can be easily compromised by hacker as some manufactures failed to implement basic security. Current devices use standards that are easy to implement and works for most forms of communications and storage. There is no such standard solution that will work on every device within the Internet of Things, because of the varied constraints between different devices, resulting in classifications within the Internet of Things. This research addresses security challenges in the Internet of Things (IoT). To this end, it's the discussions of the IoT evolution, architecture and its applications in industries. Secondly, it classifies and examines privacy threats by survey, pointing out the challenges that need to be overcome to ensure that the Internet of Things becomes a reality.

A Critical Study on Security Threats, Issues, and Challenges in the Internet of Things

Asian Journal of Computer Science Engineering(AJCSE), 2020

Smart grid, smart homes, intelligent water networks, and smart transport are the most infrastructural structures possible today to link our planet. The general vision of such systems is usually linked to a sole notion called the internet of things (IoT). In IoT, the whole solid infrastructure is diligently linked to information and communication technology through the use of networked embedded devices, where smart surveillance and control can be done. In such a sophisticated dynamic system, all instruments are interconnected to provide useful measurement and control instructions through the distributed sensor networks. The way we interact with the world around us is fast changing in technology. We are moving to new networking paradigms, the internet of objects (loT), which maintains data generation and internet communication for greater value and service through the worldwide number of interconnected sensors or intelligent objects. The IoT should facilitate the interconnection and sharing of information and useful data through thousands of devices, people, and services. To revolutionize the way the internet works, the IoT seeks to put together the ideas of machine-to-machine connectivity, big data, artificial intelligence, etc., to operate within a shared framework to interconnect cyberspace and human beings, which contributes to the advancement of cyber-physical systems. The idea of IoT has drawn considerable attention to research as the huge connectivity presents several challenges and hurdles, such as heterogeneity, scalability, safety, large data, and power demand. To achieve a stable IoT implementation, several security concepts on each layer should be enforced. The future of IoT can only be secured by discussing and resolving the security problems associated with it. Several researchers have tried by introducing effective countermeasures to resolve the security issues for IoT layers and tools. To date, there are limited surveys that highlight the challenges and issues of the IoT that has been identified as unique to the future internet and that various research communities must address and address. This paper gives an overview of security principles, technology and security challenges, proposed countermeasures , and future directions for IoT security. So far, a limited number of surveys have highlighted the challenges and issues of the IoT, the unique feature of this future network, and which different research groups have to face and address. Security Issues and Challenges in Internet of Things

Advances in Wireless Technologies and Telecommunication, 2017

The Internet of Things (IoT) aims at connecting a large number of communication and information systems. With the further development of pervasive computing, these systems can be integrated into everyday objects, such as household devices and tools. When complex systems are interconnected, it is complicated to keep track of how secure a system or connection is and to distinguish which devices are connected within the IoT and which devices are not. As to the security, the IoT will be faced with more severe challenges. There are the following reasons: 1) the IoT extends the ‘internet' through the traditional internet, mobile network and sensor network and so on, 2) every ‘thing' will be connected to this ‘internet' and 3) these ‘things' will communicate with each other. Therefore, the new security and privacy problems will arise out of which authentication and access control are the most vital security issues that need to be taken care of. Therefore, we should pay more...

In this chapter, the authors collected data from issues related to threats in the applications of IoT-based technologies that describe the security and privacy issues from 30 peer reviewed publications from 2014 to 2017. Further, they analyzed each threat type and its percentages in each application of the internet of things. The results indicated that the applications of smart transportation (20%) face the highest amount of security and privacy issues followed by smart home (19%) and smart cities (18%) compared to the rest of the applications. Further, they determined that the biggest threats were denial of service attack (9%) followed by eavesdropping (5%), man in the middle (4%), and replay (4%). Denial of service attacks and man in the middle attack are active attacks that can severely damage human life whereas eavesdropping is a passive attack that steals information. This study has found that privacy issues have the biggest impacts on people. Therefore, researchers need to find possible solutions to these threats to improve the quality of IoT applications.

Internet Of Things: Review On Security Of Novel Technology

The IOT colours a prescience of a world where all devices are interconnected and incessantly continue to share our most practical information with each other. This information, in turn enables these products to deliver improved functionality and efficiency to its users, by specially customising the devices based on their requirements. However , there are grave risks involved in this kind of a world where the devices perpetually share users data among each other. With this exponential rise in the production and usage of IoT devices, one of the biggest concern that this tech obsessed society faces is security. With more and more of our household appliances and items being connected to the internet, these facilities makes these devices vulnerable to attacks. Everyday products capable of connecting to the internet are coming into the market and with them, they bring even higher security concerns. Internet of Things which is gaining more traction every day will soon be synonymous with human existence, however its boundaries are not yet well established and neither is it secure[13]. There prevail abundance of security challenges with the present architectures and the technologies which make the cornerstone of the Internet of Things. Security breaches will not only affect businesses but consumers as well and therefore the challenges are immense. The paper focuses on conducting a systematic literature review to find out security challenges faced in IoT and to provide a prospective security framework to mitigate the potentially dangerous association with IoT.
