2016, Jurnal Agro Ekonomi
In the past sago processing business had an important role in increasing households' income of traditional sago processors, use of sago product, and sago added value. They could not perform such function anymore since they deal with some problems that lower their competitiveness, such as limited capacity to enhance quantity and quality of the product. The processors are also difficult to access market and financial support. The research aims to analyze the factors affecting the capacities of sago traditional processors and to create a strategy for strengthening their capacity. Research was conducted in Regencies of Central Moluccas and Western Seram. Samples size was 204 households of sago starch processors. Data collection was undertaken from January 2012 until April 2012 and analyzed using a structural equation model (SEM). The results showed that social economic profile of sago processors (age, business experience, motivation and individual beliefs about the social and cultural values of sago) positively and significantly influence personal capacity. Personal capacity has positive and significant influence on business capacity. Agricultural extension as an institution positively and significantly affects personal and business capacity. Business capacity also has positive and significant influence on productivity and the productivity has positive and significant influence on income from sago processing. Strengthening capacities of traditional sago processors needs agents of change (extension workers) with appropriate competencies, innovation messages, capital and equipment supports, market guarantee, government's policies for sago consumption, and preparedness of traditional sago processors to change.
