Investigating the Impact of Facebook on Students" Social Behavior: SLIATE as a case study

Facebook, the world's largest social media site of today's world is the new trendsetter on interpersonal communication, interaction, and socializing. It has changed the face of social relationships and has taken the socio-cultural settings into a new phase. This study investigates the impact of Facebook on students' academic, social behavior, privacy, and physical health. A sample of 223 questionnaires was collected from participants of 20-24 years of age. The findings emphasized that Facebook is used for recreation and relaxation, remaining updated about trends, and for socializing. Besides, there is no significant adverse impact on students' academic, social interactions, and physical health. Also, the study indicates that students are aware of how to safeguard their privacy and security virtually, which is a good sign.
Facebook Addiction among University Students
In the last five years Facebook has started to take an important part of people's daily life as the result of developments in communication technologies. Nowadays so many scholars from communication studies accept Facebook as a mass communication media that provides people to reach so much kind information and also it provides people to communicate with their social contacts. Beside these additions, people have a great time and fun by using Facebook. However; beside its benefits to social and personal life of users, it is undeniably true that Facebook has some negative effects for its users because of heavy and aimless usage. Definitely the most important of these problems is Facebook Addiction. It is so common especially among teenagers. Facebook Addiction also makes teenagers experience problems and erosions in their social life and relations. This survey focuses on Facebook Addiction among university students. According to data taken by 903 students from Selcuk University; %5.1 of the students is addicts and %22.6 of the students is in the risky group. According to these results, it can be clearly said that %27.7 of participants is problematic Facebook users. It was revealed by this survey that there is a meaningful relation between Facebook operating time of participants and loneliness level of participants with Facebook Addiction level. Moreover, it was seen that Facebook Addictions of participants differentiate according to their Facebook usage purposes. • ANAHTAR KELİMELER Social networks, Facebook, addiction, university students. • ÖZET Son yıllarda iletişim alanında yaşanan teknolojik gelişmelerin bir sonucu olarak Facebook, bireylerin yaşamlarının önemli bir parçası olmaya başlamıştır. Bugün birçok iletişim uzmanına göre Facebook; insanların ihtiyaç duyduğu birçok bilgiye ulaşmalarına, eğlenceli ve hoşça 256 TÜRKİYAT ARAŞTIRMALARI DERGİSİ vakit geçirmelerine ve sevdikleriyle eş zamanlı iletişimde bulunabilmelerine imkân tanıyan bir kitle iletişim aracıdır. Söz konusu sorunların başında hiç kuşkusuz Facebook bağımlılığı gelmektedir. Facebook bağımlılığı özellikle gençler arasında oldukça yaygın bir sorundur. Facebook bağımlılığı, beraberinde gençlerin genellikle sosyal ilişkilerinde erozyonlar ve problemler yaşamasına neden olabilmektedir. İşte bu çalışmada üniversite öğrencilerinin Facebook bağımlılığı mercek altına alınmıştır. Selçuk Üniversitesi'nde öğrenimini sürdüren 903 öğrenciden elde edilen verilere göre; katılımcıların yüzde 5.1'i Facebook bağımlısı, yüzde 22.6'sı ise riskli kullanıcı konumundadır. Bu sonuçlara göre katılımcıların yüzde 27.7'sinin "problemli Facebook kullanıcısı" olduğu söylenebilir. Katılımcıların günlük Facebook kullanım süresi ve yalnızlık düzeyleri ile Facebook bağımlılık düzeyi arasında pozitif anlamlı ilişkinin varlığı bu araştırma ile ortaya konmuştur. Literature review 1 : Recent research suggests that use of social networking sites can be addictive for some individuals. Due to the link between motivations for media use and the development of addiction, this systematic review examines Facebook-related uses and gratifications research and Facebook addiction research. Method: Searches of three large academic databases revealed 24 studies examining the uses and gratifications of Facebook, and nine studies of Facebook addiction. Results: Comparison of uses and gratifications research reveals that the most popular motives for Facebook use are relationship maintenance, passing time, entertainment, and companionship. These motivations may be related to Facebook addiction through use that is habitual, excessive, or motivated by a desire for mood alteration. Examination of Facebook addiction research indicates that Facebook use can become habitual or excessive, and some addicts use the site to escape from negative moods. However, examination of Facebook addiction measures highlights inconsistency in the field. Discussion: There is some evidence to support the argument that uses and gratifications of Facebook are linked with Facebook addiction. Furthermore, it appears as if the social skill model of addiction may explain Facebook addiction, but inconsistency in the measurement of this condition limits the ability to provide conclusive arguments. Conclusions: This paper recommends that further research be performed to establish the links between uses and gratifications and Facebook addiction. Furthermore, in order to enhance the construct validity of Facebook addiction, researchers should take a more systematic approach to assessment. In the last decade, the use of social networking sites (SNSs) has grown exponentially. For example, statistics provided by Facebook (2014) reveal that as of March 2014 there were 1.28 billion active users on the site per month, and at least 802 million of these users logged into Facebook every day. With statistics such as these, it is not surprising that Facebook is the most popular SNS in the world (see Figure 1). It is also one of the most popular websites on the Internet, second only to Google in global usage (Alexa Internet, 2013). As a result of this popularity, social scientists have recently begun to examine aspects of its use (for a detailed review of this topic see Wilson, Gosling & Graham, 2012). The proliferation of Facebook usage among youth has become a significant aspect of their social and academic lives. The widespread popularity of Facebook among students has prompted this research endeavor, which aims to conduct a preliminary analysis of Facebook's utilization and its economic impact on adolescents at Alberoni University, specifically within the Languages and Literature Faculty. This study proposes a research model to examine the patterns of Facebook usage and assess its economic implications on adolescents. The primary objective of this research is to ascertain the extent to which Afghan adolescents employ Facebook for negative and positive purposes. This paper relies on a questionnaire distributed exclusively to students at Alberoni University. The survey, administered to 200 students, sought to gauge the extent to which they utilize Facebook for positive and negative activities. The questionnaire comprises both open-ended and closed-ended questions. In the interest of data analysis convenience, Excel was employed to process both qualitative and quantitative data. This study delves into the dynamics of Facebook usage and its economic ramifications among adolescents in Afghanistan. In the pursuit of data collection, a comprehensive approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods, inclusive of open-ended and closed-ended questions, was employed. It is essential to note that this research was confined to the Kapisa province within the precincts of Alberoni University. The participants encompassed a mix of male and female students. The findings of this research indicate that Facebook is predominantly used in Afghanistan for negative purposes, including the dissemination of discriminatory content, the sharing of immoral images and videos, derogatory remarks targeting individuals and government officials, the propagation of frivolous ideas, self-promotion through photos, fostering illicit relationships, and, most significantly, wasting valuable time rather than contributing positively to society. And it is found that the economic condition of people is very low and it has directly impacted their economic.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic brought a lot of changes globally particularly in education sector.With this, teachers used different platforms to serve as an avenue for teaching –learning and one of which is the use of Facebook. This study utilizeddescriptive quantitative research. A total of210 student –respondents answered the questionnaire, which wasadapted and modified from Nguyen (2017). Frequency, mean and t-test wereused to analyze the generateddata.Results revealed thatmajority of the students used smartphone as a device to access Facebookandthey were connected with their friends and teachers. They used Facebook daily and spend 1 to 6 hours per week. In addition, Facebook wasbeing used as learning platform. Most students used Facebook to get informationand to communicate with their classmatesabout school-related topics. When dataon actual usage of Facebookwere grouped according to gender, significant differenceexists, while, there was no significant differencewhen the datawere grouped according to track. The common issues encountered by the students were poor internet connectivity, verification of education-related resources and easily distractedby other Facebook contents. When data were grouped according to gender and track, results revealed that therewereno significant difference.

In the world, Facebook is one of the most well-known social networking sites, which is used a lot among students. The purpose of this research is to identify the devoted time students’ spend on the usage of Facebook, and its impacts on learners’ social life at Mirwais Khan Nika Zabul Institute of Higher Education, Zabul, Afghanistan. In this study, the quantitative research method was used to collect data from one hundred and fifteen students, and they were selected through a random sample. Likewise, the questionnaire was designed based on the literature review then the data was collected from the participants. Similarly, the data was analyzed by using IBM 24 version of SPSS and found out the frequency and percentage of the demographic data as well as the items. Effect of Facebook on the life of Medical University students

Background: Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004, owned and operated by Facebook, Inc. As of June 2012, Facebook reports more than 1 billion active users. Objective of study was to evaluate the effect of Facebook on the social life, health and behavior of medical students. Methodology: It was a cross sectional, observational and questionnaire based study conducted in Dow University OF Health Sciences during the period of January 2012 to November 2012. We attempted to interview all the participants who could be approached during the period of the study. Participants were MBBS students, while all students of other courses and programs were taken as exclusion criteria. Approximately 1050 questionnaires were distributed to participants. Fifty questionnaires were rejected due to incomplete answers, yielding 1000 usable responses for an approximate 95% response rate. Informed verbal consent was taken from each participant. Study was ethically approved by Institutional Review Board of Dow University of Health Sciences. All the data was entered and analyzed through SPSS 19. Result: Out of total 1000 participants, males were 400 (40%) and females were 600 (60%). Participants were in the age group of 18-25 years with a mean age of 20.08 years. Most of the participants were using Facebook daily (N = 640, 64%) for around 3-4 hours (N = 401, 40.1%). Majority of them (N = 359, 35.9%) believed that they were equally active on Facebook and in real life while few believed their social life became worse after start using Facebook (N = 372, 37.2%). Most of the participants admitted that they were considered as shy in real world (N = 390, 39.0%) while in the world of Facebook they were considered as fun loving by their friends (N = 603, 60.3%). A large number of participants (N = 715, 75%) complained of mood swings. Conclusion: Youngsters are willing to compromise their health, social life, studies for the sake of fun and entertainment or whatever satisfaction they get after using Facebook. What we observed in our study was that although majority of our subjects showed multiple signs of Facebook addiction, they don't realize it and if even they realize it they don't want to quit Facebook and even if they want to quit, they can't. Our observance concluded that majority of the users are highly addicted.
