Background The urgent need for patient safety education for healthcare students has been recognised by many accreditation bodies, but to date there has been sporadic attention to undergraduate/graduate medical programmes. Medical students themselves have identified quality and safety of care as an important area of instruction; as future doctors and healthcare leaders, they must be prepared to practise safe healthcare. Medical education has yet to fully embrace patient safety concepts and principles into existing medical curricula. Universities are continuing to produce graduate doctors lacking in the patient safety knowledge, skills and behaviours thought necessary to deliver safe care. A significant challenge is that patient safety is still a relatively new concept and area of study; thus, many medical educators are unfamiliar with the literature and unsure how to integrate patient safety learning into existing curriculum. Design To address this gap and provide a foothold for medical schools all around the world, the WHO's World Alliance for Patient Safety sponsored the development of a patient safety curriculum guide for medical students. The WHO Patient Safety Curriculum Guide for Medical Schools adopts a 'one-stop-shop' approach in that it includes a teacher's manual providing a step-by-step guide for teachers new to patient safety learning as well as a comprehensive curriculum on the main patient safety areas. This paper establishes the need for patient safety education of medical students, describes the development of the WHO Patient Safety Curriculum Guide for Medical Schools and outlines the content of the Guide.

Evaluation of World Health Organization Multi-Professional Patient Safety Curriculum Topics in Nursing Education Pretest, posttest noneexperimental study

The Multi-professional Patient Safety Curriculum Guide was launched by the World Health Organization to develop a patient safety-friendly curriculum in health education. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of teaching related to two topics from the Patient Safety Curriculum Guide on student nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward patient safety. A pretest, posttest, nonexperimental design was used. Patient safety education questionnaires were distributed to a convenience sample of 181 nursing students before the intervention, and 141 questionnaires after the intervention in one university in the East of England. The intervention consisted of two face-to-face lectures and one facilitated group work discussion. Seventy-one responses from pre- and posttest stages were matched. Paired t test, McNemar's test, and frequency measures were used for data analysis. The findings suggest that there are statistically significant differences in the subscales of the error and patient safety and personal influence over safety. The differences in the students' answers on patient safety knowledge before and after the interventions were not statistically significant. Although the student nurses highly commended the teaching delivered in this study, the use of experimental design in future curriculum evaluation may provide a more complementary insight to the findings of this study

The Patient Safety Education Project: An International Collaboration

The Patient Safety Education Project (PSEP) aims to advance the shift to patient-centered, systems-based care through high-impact education of health care workers using a superior "trainthe-trainer" dissemination mechanism. Employing a core curriculum that includes practice improvement toolkits, PSEP develops "safety trainers," who teach patient safety and foster its practice among "end-learners" in their own institutions. From 2005 to 2006, PSEP gathered support from leaders and identified learning topics. In 2007, the core curriculum was developed. In 2008, PSEP will be piloted before proceeding to rollouts in the United States and Australia. PSEP will be a course-driven college without walls that works with partner organizations; it will use a nonprofit, cost-recovery, sustainable economic model. Evaluation of PSEP's impact will measure change in attitudes, knowledge, and simulated skills at our courses. We will also evaluate practice change, patient outcomes, and practice norms in service delivery settings.

Educating future leaders in patient safety

Education of health care professionals has given little attention to patient safety, resulting in limited understanding of the nature of risk in health care and the importance of strengthening systems. The World Health Organization developed the Patient Safety Curriculum Guide: Multiprofessional Edition to accelerate the incorporation of patient safety teaching into higher educational curricula. The World Health Organization Curriculum Guide uses a health system-focused, team-dependent approach, which impacts all health care professionals and students learning in an integrated way about how to operate within a culture of safety. The guide is pertinent in the context of global educational reforms and growing recognition of the need to introduce patient safety into health care professionals' curricula. The guide helps to advance patient safety education worldwide in five ways. First, it addresses the variety of opportunities and contexts in which health care educators teach, and provides practical recommendations to learning. Second, it recommends shared learning by students of different professions, thus enhancing student capacity to work together effectively in multidisciplinary teams. Third, it provides guidance on a range of teaching methods and pedagogical activities to ensure that students understand that patient safety is a practical science teaching them to act in evidence-based ways to reduce patient risk. Fourth, it encourages supportive teaching and learning, emphasizing the need to establishing teaching environments in which students feel comfortable to learn and practice patient safety. Finally, it helps educators incorporate patient safety topics across all areas of clinical practice.

Patient Safety Education 20 Years After the Institute of Medicine Report: Results From a Cross-sectional National Survey

Objectives Educating healthcare professionals in patient safety is essential to achieving sustainable improvements in care. This study aimed to identify the key constituents of patient safety education alongside its facilitators and barriers from a frontline perspective. Methods An electronic survey was sent to 592 healthcare professionals and educators in patient safety education in the United Kingdom. Two independent reviewers conducted a thematic analysis of the free-text data. Themes focused on effective content, learning practices and facilitators and barriers to patient safety education. Results Of 592 individuals completing the survey, 545 (92%) submitted analyzable responses. Interrater reliability of coding was high with Cohen k value of 0.86. Participants endorsed experiential and interactive learning as ideal modalities for delivery and expressed a need for content to be based on real clinical cases and tailored to the needs of the learners. Description and Evaluation of an Interprofessional Patient Safety Course for Health Professions and Related Sciences Students

Objectives: The structure, process, and outcomes associated with planning, developing, and offering an interprofessional course on the foundations of patient safety is described, including how organizational, structural, cultural, and attitudinal barriers were overcome. Methods: Seventeen faculty members from 7 colleges and schools and medical center participatedVfrom the fields of decision sciences and systems, dentistry, medicine, law, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, social work, health care administration, and outcomes management in health systems. Student assessment included theme analysis of open-ended questions, descriptive analysis of multipleY response option questionnaires, and criterionbased assessment of student performance on case studies. Triangulation of student comments, final course evaluation, and student performance evaluations were performed to learn overarching themes of student experience with the course. Results: The students learned a different way of thinking, found the instructional design and active learning methods useful to learning, and felt prepared to solve problems in the future. Students believed that the content was an essential core knowledge for all health professionals (87%) and should be required for all health professions students (78%). Students achieved an application level of learning (77%) within the cognitive domain and the valuing level within the affective domain. Students agree (96%) that they can define and apply the basic principles and tenets of patient safety, including identification of tools needed to work effectively within the health system and to improve safety and strongly agree (100%) that they value patient safety as a professional practice framework. Conclusion: The universitywide implementation case may offer important lessons to others nationally in health care education.

Patient Safety Instruction in US Health Professions Education

Objective. To describe patient safety instruction in health professional curricula, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and dentistry. Methods. A systematic review of the literature from 1966 through 2010 was conducted using 6 databases and based on 3 search criteria: safety management, patient safety, and curriculum. Results. One hundred fifty-four articles were identified and 23 met inclusion criteria. A variety of educational methods have been used in health profession curricula to promote patient safety including lectures, workshops, objective structured clinical examinations, standardized patients, simulation exercises, root cause analysis, quality assurance projects, and other interactive learning methods. The development of patient safety curricula has been primarily discipline-specific, with little interdisciplinary research found. Conclusions. Safe, patient-centered care is directly influenced by the quality of education that healthcare professions students receive. From this literature review, research is needed to guide curricular change, specifically focusing on instructional methods and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Learning of Patient Safety in Health Professions Education

The awareness of patient safety became one of the emerging topics over the last two decades. However, in medical curricula, the knowledge of its principles is still facing challenges concerning its proper timing and the suitable methods of instruction. Many studies have shown several trials dealing with the introduction, implementation, and evaluation of patient safety courses in health professions institutions. Moreover, the training of healthcare professionals focuses on the clinical and curative competencies rather than preventive skills. Therefore, the knowledge about patient safety is a necessity for all graduates in health professions careers. Thus the World Health Organization (WHO) have developed a curriculum guide for patient safety to help health professions institutions integrating patient safety principles in their curricula. This chapter will focus on the educational aspects of patient safety topics in health professions education.
