Motivations for Using Social Networking Sites by College Students for Educational Purposes
Recently there has been a dramatic proliferation in the number of social networking sites (SNSs) users; however, little is published about what motivates college students to use SNSs in education. The main goal of this research is to explore the college students' motives for using SNSs in education. A conceptual framework has therefore been developed to identify the main factors that influence/motivate students to use social networking sites for learning purposes. To achieve the research objectives a quantitative method was used to collect data. A questionnaire has been distributed amongst college students. The results reveal that social influence, perceived enjoyment, institute regulation, perceived usefulness, ranking up-lift, attractiveness, communication tools, free of charge, sharing material and course nature all play an important role in the motivation of college students to use SNSs for learning purposes.

In a world where concepts like web 1.0 or CD are slowly becoming a part of the universal inheritance, a new era is slowly taking it's place among us. We are talking about the world of web 2.0, of gadgets and the world of the online communities. The main purpose of this study is to discover deep motivations that determine young people, mostly students to be a part of these online communities. The theoretical background of the research is the uses and gratification approach and the method that has been used is focus group. It is a qualitative approach; the method consists in focus groups. The motivations that determine young people to use online social networks are psychological ones, and they are strongly related to the human needs of communication, socialization, being an active part of a group, or maintaining long distance friendships.
Motives for using Social Network Sites (SNSs)–An analysis of SNS adoption among students

Social Network Sites (SNSs) are widely used and have been object of research for some years. Existing studies have investigated single Social Networking (SN) phenomena or the usage of particular SNSs. However, only little research has been conducted on the motives for using SNSs. The paper at hand will present a survey for gaining insight into the motives of SNS usage and potential contextual factors that might shape these motives. The study was conducted in two steps: 1) Generation of hypotheses by guided interviews; 2) Test of hypotheses by two online surveys. Drawing on the results as well as the current body of research, the authors will identify different motives for the usage and none-usage of SNSs and determine potential contextual factors.

This study explored the student motives for utilizing SNSs in Dar Salaam Tanzania. The Research design used in this study was cross-sectional Descriptive research design. The target population was 7337 students and a sample of 356 was selected through Proportionate Random sampling. The Quantitative data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, tables, frequency, percentages and standard deviation. Connecting to classmates, Sending messages, opinions and updates, socializing, chatting and updating profile were some of most students’ motives for using SNSs. BACKGROUND The aim of this research was to identify those factors which motivate the use of social networks by 4th year students in Secondary Education between the ages of 15 and 18. METHOD 1,144 students from 29 public and private schools took part. The data were analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling technique. RESULTS Versatility was confirmed to be the variable which most influences the motivation of students in their use of social networks. The positive relationship between versatility in the use of social networks and educational uses was also significant. CONCLUSIONS The characteristics of social networks are analysed according to their versatility and how this aspect makes them attractive to students. Social Networking as an Alternative Environment for Education

The main purpose of this research is to analyze the impact of social networks on educational process in Romanian higher education. Employing a theoretical framework regarding the educational value of the social networking web sites, we propose a model of implementing Facebook usage in higher education leaning processes. In order to support our argument, data were gathered through a survey on students and academics at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies. Our results reveal that social networking sites have become very popular among students and might be considered as valuable tools for education. The study also opens a wide perspective on students' availability to use social networking sites, but also other web based technologies. While the literature concerning the educational process in Romania is scarce, we contribute by providing empirical evidence about the degree of availability of students and academics in using social networking sites for education.
Motives and characteristics of Facebook use by students from a Romanian university

The increasing popularity of Facebook among university students is raising several research questions regarding the characteristics of use. In the context of modern school, the academic use and the usage related to the university context are of special interest. This paper aims at analyzing the motives for the use of Facebook and the characteristics of Facebook use by students from a Romanian university. The results show that the motives of using Facebook are mainly related to communicating with friends, to find out what happens in their university and to keep in touch with former high school colleagues. The results revealed significant differences between male and female students in terms of motives of using, network size, frequency and duration of use. Female students have more Facebook friends and spend more time on Facebook than male students. Moreover, significant differences exist between undergraduate and master students.

Social networks sites have a considerable impact on all our life aspects, especially the educational sector. This study aims at identifying the factors affecting students’ actual usage of social networks sites for educational purposes in Jordanian universities. The proposed model consists factors of UTAUT2 theory (Effort expectancy, Performance expectancy, Social influence, Facilitating condition, Habit, Hedonic motivation). The role and potential of social networks sites in tertiary education

Purpose of the paper: Social Networks Sites (SNSs) are becoming very popular among students and constitute a promising field for tertiary education evolution. This research aims at assessing the usage of social networks for educational aims and at evaluating the perception of university students towards this kind of usage. Methodology: Methodologically, the paper rests on an extensive, comprehensive and comparative theoretical research on the subject, as well as on primary research involving the in-depth survey of 125 university students in Northern Italy. Findings: The findings underline the importance of utilizing SNSs to improve educational communications, sharing of information, student-student and studenteducator interaction, efficiency, polyphony and more. The research also stressed the need for SNS adoption to be specific and in accordance with both student and lecturer attitudes, competences and limitations, as well other therein specified stakeholders and added values. Research limitations: this is an exploratory study based on a sample of moderately limited size and, although generically valuable, it focuses specifically on Northern Italy. Implications: the present research, in addition to its practical applications, may be extended to the academic faculty and to an analysis, based on a wider sample, of the underlying motivators that inhibit students and faculty from adopting SNSs for educational purposes. Originality/Value of the paper: although literature on SNSs in education does exist, studies on university students' attitude towards SNSs are scarce and contrasting. This research sheds light on this still underexplored, yet increasingly important subject by descriptively aiding the comprehension of SNSs for educational purposes, while prescriptively indicating advisable courses of action.
Determination of University Students’ Reasons of Using Social Networking Sites in their Daily Life
The aim of this research is to find out undergraduate students’ reasons of using social media in their daily life. In this research students were chosenfrom Near East University's various departments. 229 volunteer undergraduate students from the department of teaching the mentally disadvantaged, department of music teaching, department of pre-school teaching, department of psychological counseling and guidance, and department of computer education and instructional technology were chosen as a sample. This study was applied during the 2013-2014 spring term. The survey was development by the author. This 5 type likert survey contains 16 positive statements. The collected data was analyzed with the SPSS package software. Results were shownthrough percentages and descriptions. According to the results, the most frequent reason for using social networking is for instant communication with their friends.
