Knowledge-Based View as an intangible resource for the company will become the knowledge capability it possesses. Particularly in the context of SMEs in developing countries like Indonesia, SMEs have a big role in contributing to the country's economy. Therefore, knowledge capability is a resource that must be owned by SMEs that should be able to encourage adopting this type of innovation. In accordance with the basis of Knowledge-Based View, this knowledge will have an impact on company performance and its competitive advantage through the types of innovations that have been adopted. The quantitative method was used by distributing questionnaires totaling 120 SMEs in Indonesia and the data were processed using PLS-SEM. This study has a hypothesis that the relationship between knowledge management capability has a positive and significant effect on firm performance, as well as the mediating role of the type of innovation. The results in this study indicate that knowledge managem...
The effect of internal and external sources of knowledge on product innovation in Southeast Asia
2010 IEEE International Conference on Management of Innovation & Technology, 2010
This paper examines the effect of internal and external sources of knowledge on the introduction of new products based on new technologies or information to the firms responded to the questionnaire survey conducted in four Southeast Asian countries. We estimate binary probit models. The estimation results verify that local firms make full use of locally available sources of new technologies or information to achieve the product innovation. On the other hand, foreign-owned firms depend mainly on internal R&D capacities and cooperation with local universities.

Small and medium enterprises in Indonesia are currently facing stiff competition because more and more competitors are emerging. To win the competition, local companies must pay attention to the strategies adopted so as to produce innovations that can be a strength for the organization itself. Factors that influence the creation of innovation it self include knowledge management and network capability. The purpose of this study is to investigate how knowledge management and network capability affect the creation of innovation. This research uses descriptive research. Data was collected through a survey by distributing questionnaires to 200 respondents and returning 170 respondents. The results of the study indicate that there is a positive influence between knowledge management on network capability and the creation of innovation, besides that network capability has a significant effect on the creation of innovation.

Management research considers knowledge as one of the first sources of competitiveness of the company. This observation is at the origin of development in recent years, the Knowledge-Based View (Grant, 1996), resulting from the resource-based perspective approach. This research examines the importance of internal sources of knowledge and its relationship with organizational innovation and organizational performance. We did this research on a sample of 200 Tunisian companies operating in different sectors. Our study was built mainly on the basis of quantitative method. The data collection method is the questionnaire as part of a hypothetical-deductive approach and the mode of administration is self-administered survey and e-mail survey. The empirical verification of the assumptions of this research has led us to confirm the relationship between internal and external sources of knowledge with organizational innovation and organizational performance and to infirm the relationship between organizational innovation and organizational performance.

This paper attempts to investigate the extent to which the existing internal capabilities of firms and their interaction with external sources of knowledge affect their level of innovativeness. Part of these capabilities result from a prolonged process of investment and knowledge accumulation within firms and form what has been addressed as the "absorptive capacity" of firms (Cohen & Levinthal, Admin. Sci Q., 35 ). There are however other efforts that enhance the "original" definition of absorptive capacity and these relate to the way firms interact with their environment. Empirical data from an extensive survey that was carried out in seven European countries, the Netherlands, provides evidence for studying the relative effectiveness of specific mechanisms of knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. The results show that both internal capabilities and openness towards knowledge sharing are important for upgrading innovative performance.
The Impact of Knowledge Sources on Knowledge Creation: A Study in Thai Innovative Companies
In today fast changing business world, innovation has become the mainstay of every organization. Organizations have to ensure that their business strategies are innovative to build and sustain competitive advantage.Innovation is a result of knowledge acquisition, sharing and assimilation through knowledge creation. However, innovation is extremely dependent on the availability of knowledge and therefore the complexity created by the explosion of richness and reach of knowledge has to be identified and managed to ensure successful innovation. In the context of Thai innovative companies, there are not many studies conducted to investigate the impact of internal and external sources of knowledge on knowledge creation. The main purpose of this study is to identify the sources of knowledge which includes organizational knowledge and market orientation as well as to investigate their impacts on knowledge creation. The dimensions of organizational knowledge consisted of social interaction,...
This study aims to examine the relationship between knowledge stickiness and a firm's innovation capability in the context of developing countries, i.e., Indonesia. The main research question addressed by this study is: does knowledge stickiness affect a firm's innovation capability? Using data from 100 small-and medium-sized furniture enterprises (SMEs), the study finds that product innovations are predominant over process and organizational ones. However, incremental innovations are often more preferred than radical ones. This study also finds that the firms absorb knowledge from various sources to undertake innovations. Buyers, Internet, and suppliers are the significant sources, for sensory, coded, and theoretical knowledge. Buyers are also the main source of a great extent of various knowledge domains related to product, process, and organizational innovations. In general, the furniture firms do not pay considerable attention to planning stages when introducing innovations, as indicated by the fact that not all innovations are preceded by initiatives, except for really new processes and organizational innovations whose impact on the firms' revenue is less visible. Out of four dimensions of knowledge stickiness used in this study, three of them (i.e., knowledge interconnectedness, sensory knowledge, and coded knowledge) are proven to have significant impact on a firm's innovation capability. We find, knowledge interconnectedness and coded knowledge have a positive impact, while sensory knowledge influences a firm's innovation capability in a negative direction. All in all, this study provides empirical evidence that knowledge stickiness has a significant impact on a firm's innovation capability (explains 36% of total variance).

ideas are no longer generated solely within a firm's internal boundaries but also sourcedfrom the external knowledge environment. Therefore, firms can no longer rely solely on internal knowledge to develop new ideas or solve problems. This paper is based on empirical research which investigates different knowledge acquisition strategies utilized by firms during the innovation process. It suggests that there is a relationship between the kind of innovative activity (cumulative or radical) and the sourcing of knowledge (i.e., the internal and/or external environment). Two hypotheses are derived from the literature and tested empirically. These hypotheses are based on the premise that cumulative type organizations focus primarily on internal knowledge or existing core competencies within the firm and are less likely to scan the external environment for ideas and knowledge, whereas radical type organizations are continually pushing out the boundaries of knowledge and replacing existing core competencies with new ideas and knowledge and are therefore predisposed toward utilizing external knowledge. The research findings confirm the hypotheses and enable the development of a third dimension based on a dual ability to focus on both cumulative and radical innovation aligned with the most appropriate knowledge acquisition strategy.
