The historical union between religion and the state has bred all forms of vices, religion playing intrinsic role in the subjugation of the people while reward is postponed to afterlife. This work x-ray the dynamic contest between the state and religion with special focus on Nigeria. It examines the evolution and dimension of the conflict and also explores the separation between religion and the state. It seeks to draw a synergy between the prevailing theories of terrorism in Nigeria and it thereby identifies several internal facilitators. It concludes that Boko haram conflict is a secretion of the nature and quality of leadership of the state in the past and the lackadaisical approach to religious intolerance, ethnicity, youth restiveness, unemployment and alternative educational system of Almajiri, practice in northern Nigeria. It therefore recommends constitutional amendment of a total separation of the state from religion. It also recommends a concerted effort by the sub regional body ECOWAS in the fight against terrorism. Key Words: Boko Haram, secularism, pan-Islamism, church, killing, Islam.

Religious Movements and Lethal Violence in Nigeria: Patterns and Evolution

This article argues that lethal violence by religious practices and allegiances are more common in northern Nigeria more than in southern Nigeria, that the deadly attacks in the South are reprisal to the killing of Christians in the North, which polarises the society. Hence, a way of eradicating this violence is by initiating strategies to sanction adherents that incite religious violence, and therefore, it is suggested leaders should consider promoting inter-religious marriages, seminars, peace education, and religious tolerance, coupled with state sanctions for those who obstruct the peace.

Religion and the Nigerian State: Situating the de facto and de jure Frontiers of State-Religion Relations and its Implications for National Security

Oxford Journal of Law and Religion, 2014

Since its independence in 1960, Nigeria has struggled unsuccessfully to clearly articulate the relationship between religion and the state. Whereas the British colonialists seemingly bequeathed to the new nation-state a secular regime at independence, the internal contradictions, which, paradoxically were propagated by the colonial authority, incubated to pose a challenge to the new state soon thereafter. On the one hand, there was the Muslim north, groomed under the English indirect rule, which accommodated the sharia legal order; on the other hand, there was the Christian/Animist south, mentored under the British-secular regime. Thus the postindependence secular state, which seemed acceptable to the Christian/animist south, was abhorred by the Muslim north. This paradox has remained the Achilles' heel of Nigeria's corporate existence, as northern Islamists have consistently sought the establishment of an Islamic state to replace the extant secular regime. This article therefore seeks to situate the legal and constitutional frontiers of state-religion relations in Nigeria. It is intent on delineating the conceptual boundary between religion and politics, while evaluating the impact of the current relationship on national security. The article advocates for a moderate secular regime-by whatever name-that is constitutionally defined and institutionalized.

Nigeria's religion-state relation and its legal implications for freedom of religion

This paper argues that contrary to the perception of many scholars, Nigeria's religion-state pattern is a hybrid of religious preference models at the vertical and horizontal levels of government. And that this configuration has positive and negative legal implications on freedom of religion in the country. The paper combines the methodologies of Jeroen Temperman and Jonathan Fox to establish the thesis. These approaches evaluate actual state practices, whether or not such practices are backed by law, rather than focusing on what the Constitution provides. 2 W.
