Critical assessment of healthcare informatics standards (original) (raw)

This paper critically assesses the current state of healthcare informatics standards, highlighting both achievements and persistent challenges in integrating standards effectively within healthcare delivery organizations. By focusing on intra-organizational information management, it emphasizes the limitations of current standards that stem from a fragmented, 'best of breed' approach to information system management. The review points out that while data interchange standards like HL7 have been developed, they often fall short in creating cohesive integration across diverse applications due to a lack of consensus on application roles and relationships. The analysis calls for a reevaluation of how to expand these standards to better unify the clinical process.
