Manipulation of Ideology inTranslationof Political Texts: A Critical Discourse Analysis Perspective

Journal of Language and Translation, 2011

As a culture-based phenomenon which involves both linguistic and social aspects, translation has been investigated from various perspectives. The present Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)-based study is an attempt to probe into the manipulation of ideologies in translations of political texts. A CDA approach, based on Fairclough (1989), Van Dijk (2004) and Farahzad (2007), was adopted to conduct this research. Three English political books alongside their corresponding translations in Persian were critically analyzed both at micro and macro levels. At micro-level, lexical features based on Van Dijk's model (2004) and grammatical features based on Fairclough's (1989) framework were analyzed. This was followed by the analysis of macro-features (based on Farahzad, 2007) such as notes, prefaces, and footnotes in the translated books for the purpose of revealing the translation network's diverse world-views and ideologies. The results show that translators make use of certain...

Advances in Language and Literary Studies The Impact of Ideology on Translation of News Stories

Translation has always undergone the impact of various metalinguistic factors which impose their impact during the process of translation and rendering its final linguistic product. News stories or better to say political discourses are among those linguistic materials that more than other textual materials undergo the impact of factors such as ideology. Not being aware of such discursive practices leads the so-called translator to suffice to linguistic substitutions without observing imbedded intentions. For the purpose of this study through a qualitative type of research and based on critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach for textual analysis and following van Dijk's concept of ideology (2002) in translation this study aimed to scrutinize the impact of ideology on Persian translations of different pieces of news stories in English in 2012. The corpus consisted of some pieces of English news stories in worldwide news agencies (namely, Reuters, Washington Post, New York Post, and Forbes) about Iran's nuclear program. Results of the study showed that ideology was the very important stimulus which can control and direct the purpose of the news stories being translated from English to Persian and revealed its impact in a desired way as news stories for target audience.

The Role of Critical Discourse Analysis in Translation: A Case of the Political Speech

Istanbul University Journal of Translation Studies, 2024

This study aims to provide insights into understanding the theoretical background of the application of critical discourse analysis (CDA) in the translation of political texts in the field of translation studies. The study also casts light on the investigation into the ideological and discursive issues in translation through the use of CDA as well as political discourse and translation. CDA is crucial in understanding the role and significance of discourse in the translation of a political text without disregarding the literary sense, authentic style of the speaker in the target language, and rhetorical devices. In this regard, this study considers the case of a political speech to demonstrate the role and significance of CDA in the translation of political speech. For this reason, the study has selected the case of Donald Trump’s inaugural address for translation into the target language of Turkish by the study’s author through the use of a critical lens. Following a critical approach and Norman Fairclough’s (1995) model for CDA in the interpretation and translation of political discourse, this study aims to provide explanations and solutions to the difficulties encountered in the interpretation and translation of a political speech. Therefore, the comparison of the source text with the target text offered and discussed in this study helps to underline and raise awareness about the contributions of CDA to translation studies.

A Critical Discourse Analysis of Political Ideology and Control Factors in News Translation

There are some factors in translating a text which influence the result of translation process, one of which is political ideology and control factors which impose some limitations and give direction to the translator. Through this paper an attempt has been made to substantiate these imposing factors as well as describing the ways translators might apply. Based on critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach to textual analysis and following Lefevere's (1992a; 1992b) concept of patronage, it has been tried to compare some newspaper texts with their related translations so as to depict the role of imposing factors in the process of translation. Results of the survey and analysis of the factors behind the translational aspects indicate that ideologies and political issues are important stimuli which can control the materials being translated, and then presented to the mass through news texts.

Ideology in Translating News Headline: A Critical Discourse Analysis Point of Vie

2018

Translation study is no longer seen as the product where the analysis stays on the strategy and method. Further, the process can be analyzed through both the source text and the target text. What can be seen here is the factors influences the translator in translating or reproducing the text. Translation study has found its close relationship with Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). There are many studies conducted by previous researcher who have successfully liked translation study and CDA. Therefore this research also tries to prove the link between translation study and CDA. Its focus is to determine the translator’s ideology in translating news headlines. The researcher randomly took 20 news headlines from B2B, a news website, in order to get the authentic data. The news headlines taken as the data are translated by one translator. This analysis is based on the first model of method proposed by Al-Hejin adopted from Norman Fairclough. The finding shows that the translator transmi...

Ideology and Translation: A Critical Discourse Analysis Approach towards the Representation of Political News in Translation

International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature

Recently the impact of ideology of the powerful agents namely-Political Parties, News Agencies and even the translators-on the translation has been considered significantly among the translation scholars. This study investigates the role of ideology in translating news media. To this end, we utilize Norman Fairclough's assumptions in critical discourse analysis, claiming that "ideologies reside in texts" that "it is not possible to read off' ideologies from texts" and that "texts are open to diverse interpretations" (Fairclough, 1995a) It also follows Lefevere's (1992a, 1992b) Patronage theory. In this paper, we will compare the news texts with their translations in order to reveal the role of ideology in the translation process.
