On Generalized Knot Groups (original) (raw)
2008, Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications
Generalized knot groups Gn(K) were introduced first by Wada and Kelly independently. The classical knot group is the first one G1(K) in this series of finitely presented groups. For each natural number n, G1(K) is a subgroup of Gn(K) so the generalized knot groups can be thought of as extensions of the classical knot group. For the square knot SK and the granny knot GK, we have an isomorphism G1(SK) ≅ G1(GK). From the presentations of Gn(SK) and Gn(GK), for n > 1, it seems unlikely that Gn(SK) and Gn(GK) would be isomorphic to each other. Curiously, we are able to show that for any finite group H, the numbers of homomorphisms from Gn(SK) and Gn(GK) to H, respectively, are the same. Moreover, the numbers of conjugacy classes of homomorphisms from Gn(SK) and Gn(GK) to H, respectively, are also the same. It remains a challenge to us to show, as we would like to conjecture, that Gn(SK) and Gn(GK) are not isomorphic to each other for all n > 1.

The 2-GENERALIZED Knot Group Determines the Knot
Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, 2008
Generalized knot groups Gn(K) were introduced independently by Kelly [5] and Wada [10]. We prove that G2(K) determines the unoriented knot type and sketch a proof of the same for Gn(K) for n > 2.
Factor Groups of Knot and LOT Groups
A classical result of H. S. M. Coxeter asserts that a certain quotient B(m, n) of the braid group B(m) on m strands is finite if and only if (m, n) corresponds to the type of one of the five Platonic solids. If k is a knot or virtual knot, one can study similar quotients G(k, n) for the corresponding knot group. We identify a class of long virtual knots k for which G(k, n) is infinite for n ≥ 2. The main feature of these long virtual knots is that their Wirtinger complexes are non-positively curved squared complexes.
The knot 52 and cyclically presented groups
1998
The cyclically presented groups which arise as fundamental groups of cyclic branched coverings of the knot 5 2 are studied. The fundamental polyhedra for these groups are described. Moreover the cyclic covering manifolds are obtained in terms of Dehn surgery and as two-fold branched coverings of the 3-sphere.
On normal subgroups of an amalgamated product of groups with applications to knot theory
Boletin De La Sociedad Matematica Mexicana, 2014
In this paper, useful necessary and sufficient conditions for a normal subgroup of an amalgamated product of groups to be finitely generated are given. These conditions are applied together with Stallings' fibering theorem to give a simple proof that an irreducible multilink in a homology 3-sphere fibers if and only if each of its multilink splice components fibers.
arXiv (Cornell University), 2021
For a knot diagram K, the classical knot group π1(K) is a free group modulo relations determined by Wirtinger-type relations on the classical crossings. The classical knot group is invariant under the Reidemeister moves. In this paper, we define a set of quotient groups associated to a knot diagram K. These quotient groups are invariant under the Reidemeister moves and the set includes the extended knot groups defined by Boden et al and Silver and Williams.
Some Problems on Knots, Braids, and Automorphism Groups
We present and discuss some open problems formulated by participants of the International Workshop "Knots, Braids, and Automorphism Groups" held in Novosibirsk, 2014. Problems are related to palindromic and commutator widths of groups; properties of Brunnian braids and two-colored braids, corresponding to an amalgamation of groups; extreme properties of hyperbolic 3-orbifold groups, relations between inner and quasi-inner automorphisms of groups; and Staic's construction of symmetric cohomology of groups.
