Preparation of nanosized alumina using a low cost precursor
International Journal of Nanotechnology, 2010
Alpha alumina powders have been prepared by the pyrolysis of sucrose, aluminium nitrate and ammonium nitrate. After spray pyrolysis at 400°C the mixture yields fluffy light brown precursor mass. After grinding followed by heat-treatment at 900°C and 1000°C it produced the alpha-alumina having particle sizes of 42 nm and 55 nm with surface area 12 m 2 /gm and 16 m 2 /gm respectively .The yield per unit time from precursor with ammonium nitrate is 3-4 times that of simple thermal spray pyrolysis without ammonium nitrate. The particle size and crystallite size have been decreased with increase of sucrose commensurated with ammonium nitrate in the reaction mixture. The crystallite sizes are comparable with particle sizes due to poor agglomeration due to excess addition of sucrose and ammonium nitrate.
Synthesis of nano α-alumina powders using hydrothermal and precipitation routes: a comparative study
Ceramics International, 2014
Two different synthesis methods, viz. precipitation and hydrothermal treatment, were used to synthesize ultra-fine α-alumina powders from aluminium chloride, ammonia solution and TEAH (tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide). XRD, BET surface area analysis, TEM and FEG-SEM were used to characterise the powders produced. The presence of industrial α-alumina powder as seed particles did not affect the transformation to α-alumina phase during the hydrothermal treatment at 220˚C, either in basic or acidic environments. The results obtained from the precipitation route, however, showed that the combined effect of adding α-alumina seeds and surfactants to the precursor solution could lower the transformation temperature of αalumina from about 1200˚C for unseeded samples to about 800˚C, as well as reducing the level of agglomeration in the alumina powders. The difference in transformation temperature mainly results from the nucleation process caused by the α-alumina seeds, which enhanced the θ → α transformation kinetics. The lower level of agglomeration present in the final powders could be due to a surface modifying role of the surfactants, preventing the particles from coalescing during the synthesis process.
Synthesis of Alumina Sub-Microstructure Particles Using In-House Methods
IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2018
The paper reported novel synthesis of alumina AlxOy Sub-Microstructure Particles Using In-House Methods. The structure was synthesized from aluminium oxide by in-house prepared method. The synthesis was performed using caustic soda (NaOH) assisted, pure aluminium was dissolved in pre-prepared solution of DI, H2O4, NaOH. AlxOy was prepared in crucible via 5 different pH solutions of DI, H2O4, NaOH. The pure aluminium powder was prepared from 2 NaAl(OH)4. The process passed through three reactions; Oxidation Al(OH)y, evaporation AlxOy, and dissolution 2NaAl(OH)z: Uniformly distributed activated was synthesis with the average diameter of the alumina AlxOy sub-microstructures between 10.34 to 40.2µm were realised. The prepared, activated alumina was tested against three columns of 1,260 cm3, 675 cm3 and 525 cm3 with 27 samples of different content of activated. It was found, all the three columns show to total reduction of the lead from the water with increase content of activated alumina.
Nanostructured Alumina from Freeze-Dried Precursors
Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 2011
Nanocrystalline alumina has been obtained on the 100-g scale by thermal decomposition of precursors resulting from the freeze-drying of aqueous solutions of different aluminium-containing products, namely aluminium acetate and aluminium L-lactate. Samples prepared at different temperatures (from 873 to 1573 K in steps of 100 K) were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and surface area measurements. In the acetate case, the transformation sequence involves the formation of θ-Al 2 O 3 as an intermediate phase between γand α-Al 2 O 3 , whereas this θ phase is not observed in the lactate case. TEM and SEM images show the nanoparticulate character of the aluminas obtained at relatively low temperatures, with typical particle size in the 5 to 10 nm range. Progressive grain growth occurs as temperature increases. Otherwise, the precursor characteristics have a clear influence on the microstructure of the resulting aluminas , as reflected also by the measured BET surface area values. Whereas long aluminium acetate fibres results in open arrays of low aggregated alumina particles, large aluminium lactate sheets lead to comparatively compact alumina microstructures. Nanostructured alumina obtained from the lactate precursor has been reconstituted in a granulated powder with sufficient consistence and flowability

Ultrafine particles or nanoparticles (ranging between a few nanometers to 100 nm) are of considerable interest for a wide variety of applications, ranking from catalyst to luminescence ceramics, due to their unique and improved properties primarily determined by size, composition and structure. This study presents the preparation and characterization of nanostructured spherical alumina particles by the Spray Pyrolysis method for the application in reinforcements of metal-matrix composites (MMCs). Synthesis procedure includes aerosol formation ultrasonically from alumina nitrate water solution and its decomposition into a tubular flow reactor at 700 ºC. The obtained particles are spherical, smooth, amorphous and in non-agglomerated state. Microstructural and morphological analyses were carried out using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and analytical and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM).

Nanosized alumina powder was obtained from the calcination of ammonium aluminum carbonate hydroxide (AACH) which was synthesized by precipitation method. Effects of calcination time, milling of AACH, the use of ultrasonic during synthesis of AACH and surface modification of AACH by surfactant were investigated. It was found that AACH which was calcined 1 h at 1200 ํC would become alpha-alumina completely, but it contained small degree of agglomeration. When AACH was suddenly calcined at high temperature without long heating up period, it would be able to reduce hard agglomeration in alumina particle. Furthermore, AACH milling and using of ultrasonic during AACH synthesis would also reduce hard agglomerates in the alumina particle. However, modification of AACH surface before calcination could not reduce the agglomeration. The synthesized alumina powder was fabricated into compacted bodies by biaxial press and cold isostatic press, respectively. The compacted bodies were then sintere...

This paper is trying to explore the effect of stirring time on the synthesis of nano-α-Alumina particles. In this study, alumina nanoparticles were synthesized through alkoxide route using sol-gel method, where aqueous solutions of aluminum isopropoxide and 0.5 M aluminum nitrate nanohydrate were used for preparing alumina sol. Sodium dodecylbenzen sulfonate (SDBS) was used as the surfactant stabilizing agent. The prepared solution was stirred at different times (24, 36, 48, and 60 hours) at 60◦ C.
Effect of Micro-Nano Particle Size Admixture on the Properties of Alumina
2015
Alumina ceramic is widely used because of its excellent chemical, thermo mechanical and dielectric properties. But low fracture toughness and flexural strength have limited some application of alumina ceramics. Size and distribution of particles have impact bearing on the structure and properties of ceramic materials. In this study, to investigate the effect of particle size of alumina, micron and nano-sized alumina particles were mixed in two different ratios, then pressed and sintered using conventional solid state sintering route. To compare the mechanical properties, 100% micro alumina and 100% nano alumina were also prepared. Sintering time was varied to select appropriate sintering cycle. Physical properties like density, apparent porosity and mechanical properties like Vickers hardness (HV), fracture toughness, at room temperature were evaluated. Microstructure was observed by means of a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). It has been observed that improved p...
