Freedom of movement for persons are intended to create a single market for labor and achieve greater cohesion of the peoples that make up the European Union by removing barriers to migration and promoting a "European citizenship". This article aims to present aspects of policies on asylum and border controls within the European Union. Thus, we will discuss the most representative regulations on these notions, such as the Single European Act (SEA), the Maastricht Treaty, the Amsterdam Treaty, the Schengen Agreement, and not least the Lisbon Treaty.
