What's wrong with vowel-initial syllables (original) (raw)

This paper explores the special behavior of vowel-initial syllables and their implications within the framework of Strict CV phonology. It examines the notion that empty onsets are marked cross-linguistically due to their interaction with following non-empty nuclei, leading to a proposed V-to-C melodic interaction. The study presents a typological overview of languages concerning their treatment of vowel-initial words and discusses the implications of these linguistic patterns on the understanding of syllable parsing and phonological theory.
