Contemporary challenges for project managers in Serbia

Project management profession encounters numerous challenges in today's global environment. It is a known fact for every project management professional that most common challenges are the completion of project on time, scope changes, goals, unplanned risks, engagement on several different projects, lack of competencies, lack of top management and stakeholder engagement, economic instability, legal barriers and many others. Through literature search, it was observed that there are no data related to challenges project managers face in Serbia, and for this reason, the aim of this paper is to provide this information, based on a study conducted. Challenges presented in the survey are most widely and statistically recognized ones as globally present, and the idea was to show how these challenges fit into contemporary project management practice in Serbia and to show the difference between small and large companies. The research part of the paper was based on a survey, presented to project managers in project management practising organizations in Serbia, large majority of which being from a service sector. Through this survey four hypotheses were tested. Methods of descriptive and analytical statistics were used for evaluation of the survey, and all four hypotheses were confirmed. Major challenges for project managers in Serbia were identified, and it was shown that the size of a company does have an impact on dealing with challenges. Based on the data provided decision-makers in organizations will get a clearer understanding of real challenges in project management in Serbia, which should allow for better decisions.

Project Management Practiced in Public Project Stream of Bosnia and Herzegovina

This paper will show the results of research PM in construction industry of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project management in B&H is not accepted and acknowledged widely within this industry, primarily due to the current legal regulations. Construction companies in B&H are not at an enviable stage of project management in both building and civil engineering sectors. The research results point * out that there is a noticeable difference in human interaction and the application of project management techniques, depending on the company. Without increasing the involvement and the implementation of programmed computer software for this purpose, PM cannot be present in B&H.

Application of Project Management Approaches in Running an Organization in Modern Conditions

It is determined that we formulate the concept of project management as the art and science of effective use of experience, knowledge, skills, tools and methods to meet the expectations of stakeholders in accordance with the criteria of project acceptability within agreed parameters. It is noted that project management is an approach to achiev project goals within organizational structural and resource constraints for internal projects. For external projects there should also be considered political, social, legal and environmental constraints. Five modern approaches to project management are considered, among them: traditional, flexible, waterfall, system approaches in project management and program management approach. While analyzing these approaches their main components were highlighted, as well as substantiated which components are the most effective in project management. Among the highlighted components: defining the role of each member of the project team-because understanding of each area of responsibility will ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all processes; a clearly defined goal of the projectbecause the correctness of the goal determines the direction of movement and development of the project; ensuring transparency of tasks-this means creating a project management system in which all team members can easily and efficiently access all the necessary information about the project.

A Study of Project Management Practices in the Czech Republic

The importance of project management has hastily increased and its rapid development and tendency towards innovation has made it one of the key components of organizations' performance. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper was to conduct a systematic study of the current situation and practices in the field of project management in the Czech Republic. Four areas of project management are closely studied: stakeholders´ main demands and requests, main characteristics of project management, level of use of project management methods and identification of the characteristics of the respondents. The research has an explanatory character and works with primary and secondary data. Primary data was obtained through an online cross-sectional survey comprising of four parts (identical to the areas studied) conducted in the Czech Republic in 2016. The questionnaire consisted of twenty questions in total and it had elements of both quantitative and qualitative research. It yielded 118 usable responses. The sample examined was random but expert-it covered organizations operating in the Czech Republic and respondents were asked to identify their professionalism and experience in the area of project management. Furthermore, the results of the authors' survey were compared with the results of similar surveys from the last five years providing secondary data. This comparison brought forth additional insights and better understanding of the theoretical grounding. The results showed a prominent relationship and, to some extent, a correlation between understanding (defining) a successful project and identifying success factors, stakeholder demands and problematic areas, displaying a complexity of working in the field of project management. Furthermore, a vaguely-defined scope was identified as the most problematic area and issue influencing project success. Overall, the study indicates the necessity for innovation, such as the development of a basic framework for project governance approaches as well as an increase in the use of available project management methods. The Application of Modern Methodologies and ICT in the Management of Projects in Croatian Companies

Modern business is characterized by the implementation of numerous projects which help companies to achieve some important objectives that can not be successfully fulfilled through their usual operations and processes. Therefore the area of project management (PM) has become a topic of interest for company managers as well as theorists. Successful project management has impact on companies' competitiveness. Owing to this fact, numerous methodologies for successful project management were developed, such as PRINCE2, PMI Methodology, RUP and Critical Chain Project Management. Information technology and software for supporting project management (MS Project, Primavera, etc.) are of particular significance for project success as they support a systematic and thorough approach to project management yielding better performance. Our survey, conducted on a sample of prominent Croatian companies, examines the practice and consistency of application of the principles of PM methodologies. The research described in this paper focuses on relations between certain important characteristics of projects (including project size, duration and costs) and the issues of the used PM methodology and ICT, wherein certain regularities are established.

Application of project management methods in the Czech Republic

The paper aims to determine the level of application of project management methods in the Czech Republic. In the first part, selected project management methods based on an analysis of available information resources specifically regarding the Czech Republic are defined. The main theoretical background of the paper is based on documents issued by the International Project Management Association (IPMA) and the Project Management Institute (PMI). With the use of a questionnaire survey, the level of application of project management methods in organizations operating in the Czech Republic was assessed. The questionnaire survey was conducted in three stages, the first carried out in 2015, the second in 2016, and the final stage in 2017. Based on a comparison of the results of the individual analyses, it is possible to describe the development of the application of the project management methods over time.

Determining the Role of Project Management Office in the Success of Project-Based Organizations

The present research investigates the role of project management office in project efficiency and thus its success. The statistical population used in this work includes construction corporations active in the Iran construction industry and familiar with the concept of project management office. In such organizations, existence of the project management office and the success of their projects is firstly assessed and the role of the project management office in success of the organization's project as well as comparison of them with each other is then studied. For this purpose, a quantitative research methodology in the form of survey, along with designing a questionnaire with the help of 5-point Likert scale have been used. The results obtained indicate the existence of a highly strong linear relationship between the existence of project management office and the success of project. The results also show that the more highlighted the features of this office such as methods and standards for project management, project history archive, cooperation between employees/human resources office, project management educating and project administrative support, the more the success aspect of the project will be. Finally, the mentioned inferential statistics and qualitative features lead to generation of practical guidelines for organizations which have or are seeking to establish project management office.

Project Management – Challenges and Research Results

The demand for professional expertise in project management is constantly increasing due to the progressive complication of environmental processes and the functioning of organizations of all kinds as well as arising problems through projects' execution. To meet this demand, project management is intensively developed from both the practical and scientific side. As a result, project management has become a separate field of practical and scientific knowledge which has a separate subject of study, its own theoretical foundations, using specific research methods. The development of project management is done by specialized academic centers, research institutes, professional associations, consulting firms and individual professionals. The Chair of Project Management at the Warsaw School of Economics is one of the leading centers of scientific and practical project management in Poland. The issues described in this publication cover a wide spectrum of current challenges and problems in project management. The purpose of this publication is to present the research achievements of Chair and people co-operating with it in both national and – above all – international environment of specialists in project management.

Project management methodology in the public and private sector: The case of an emerging market

Application of project management methodologies in different countries is varied. The preference of a particular methodology largely depends on the specific features of a project management system in use. The aim of the paper is to draw the attention of project-involved readers to the need to develop, not a guide, but a specific project management methodology for projects in the public-private sector.
