Contribution to the knowledge of vascular flora on Astypalea Island (Dodecanese, Greece
The aim of this paper is to contribute further knowledge of the vascular flora of the Aegean island of Astypalea (Dodecanese, Greece). The island, which acts as a bridge between the Kiklades and the eastern Aegean, is administrated as part of the Dodecanese Archipelago but shows a remarkable presence of Cycladic elements, both in terms of fauna and flora. Astypalea, home to a high number of Greek endemics and of rare species with a restricted range, is part of the floristic region of the Kiklades (Kik). An analysis of endemic taxa occurring on the island, despite its chorological vicinity to the East Aegean Islands (EAe), shows more phytogeographic connections with Crete and Karpathos (KK). For the first time, 26 new taxa have been reported for the island.
The vascular flora of Mt. Oiti National Park and the surrounding area in Greece
Journal of Forest Science
This paper presents the first comprehensive checklist of vascular plants for an especially important area for biodiversity, namely National Park “Ethnikos Drymos Oitis” – Natura 2000 site (GR2440004) and the surrounding area in Greece. This list includes a total of 1,153 plant taxa, including 79 endemic taxa and two local endemic species (Allium lagarophyllum Brullo, Pavone & Tzanoudakis and Veronica oetaea Gustavsson). It is noteworthy that 551 plants are new records for the flora of Mt. Oiti. A total of 67 taxa are protected by national and international legislation, while 52 orchid taxa are also protected by the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Veronica oetaea, a priority species of Annex II of the Directive 92/43, is also protected by the Berne Convention. The high plant species diversity and endemism make Mt. Oiti National Park an important area with high conservation value, thus providing baseline information which could ...
The vascular flora of Akrokorinthos Castle and its surrounding area (NE Peloponnese, Greece)
Phytologia Balcanica, 2007
An inventory of 418 vascular plant taxa (species and subspecies) growing in Akrokorinthos Castle and its surrounding area is presented in this paper. One hundred and eighty-four taxa are reported here for the first time. The local distribution of plants in the interior castle area, on walls and in the surrounding area is discussed. The wall flora is presented and compared with other Mediterranean wall floras. In the life-form spectrum, therophytes are overrepresented (56.4 %). Nine chorological groups are distinguished, with the Mediterranean elements (63.4 %) as dominant. The endemic element is relatively rich, including 24 taxa with a restricted distribution range confined to Greece or an even smaller area. The adventive flora is remarkably poor and it consists of only seven taxa.
The vascular flora of the nature reserve Frakto Virgin Forest of Nomos Dramas (E Makedonia, Greece)
Willdenowia, 1996
The nature reserve "Frak:to Virgin Forest of Nomos Dramas" (Central Rodopi massif, E Mak:edonia, Greece), established in 1980 to protect a unique area of upper montane forest untouched for c. 400 years, harbours the southemmost natural population of Picea abies in Europe and, within Greece, is of outstanding biogeographical interest owing to the boreal11nd Central European element, well represented in its vascular flora. A first floristic inventory of the area is presented, based on extensive recent field work and on scattered published information. Concise notes on the ecology and frequency of most taxa are provided. Ajuga pyramidalis, Anthemis orbelica, Cardamine amara, Centaurea stenolepis subsp. razgradensis, Chamaecytisus absinthoides subsp. rhodopaeus, Geum rhodopeum, Petasites kablikiamts, Primula e/atior subsp. elatior, Silene roemeri subsp. roemeri, Sorbus austriaca subsp. austriaca, and Thlaspi kovatsii are new to or reconfmned for the flora of Greece.
Fresenius Environmental Bulletin
Species-area relationships for 31 Aegean islands with well-known flora were studied. The area alone explains almost 95% of variance in the floristic richness observed, and the Evvia Island belongs to the group of species-rich islands. Its vascular flora consists of 1837 taxa (species and subspecies) in 638 genera and 131 families, of which 40 taxa are locally endemic, and 135 are Greek endemics. The phytogeographical connections of the island are stronger with the phytogeographical regions of Sterea Ellas, Peloponnisos, East Central and Kiklades. Classification of the endemic species into IUCN-threatened categories is also provided. Threat is strongly clumped across habitats. Maritime and low altitude habitats are most-threatened, particularly maritime marshes, sands and rocks. Low competition and specialized habitats with low disturbance and high stress level are the main factors correlated to the abundance of endemic taxa on Evvia, as it is indicated by the dominance of stress-tolerators in the endemic flora.

Bergmeier E., Blockeel T., Böhling N., Fournaraki C., Gotsiou P., Jahn R., Lansdown R. & Turland N.: An inventory of the vascular plants and bryophytes of Gavdopoula island (S Aegean, Greece) and its phytogeographical significance. -Willdenowia 41: 179 -190. -Online ISSN 1868-6397; © 2011 BGBM Berlin-Dahlem. Gavdopoula is an island of 177.5 ha in the S Aegean, near the southeasternmost point of Europe. Based on field excursions in 1998/99 and 2009/10, we provide an annotated floristic catalogue of 186 vascular plant and 13 bryophyte taxa, with a full record of herbarium specimens and field observations, being the first botanical inventory of the island. Species richness in relation to island area is, as shown in a diagram, according to expectations. Among the vascular plants there are six regional ('Cretan area') endemics. The Saharo-Arabian-S Mediterranean phytogeographical element is well represented, with several species confined in Greece or even in Europe to the small islands south of Crete. Of these, Atriplex mollis occurs in Europe only on Gavdopoula. The moss Entosthodon commutatus has not previously been recorded from the E Mediterranean. The vegetation is controlled chiefly by the dry Mediterranean climate, calcareous shallow soils, sea spray and seasonal grazing. It consists of halo-nitrophytic and Pistacia lentiscus scrub, two types of phrygana, small-scale ephemeral pastures with winter-annuals on red-loamy soils, and sea-cliff vegetation. The new combination, Lysimachia arvensis var. caerulea, is published.
On the flora of the Vikos-Aoos National Park (NW Greece)
Willdenowia, 1997
An inventory of 466 vascular plant taxa (species and subspecies) from the Vikos-Aoos National Park (NW Greece) is presented, based on recent field work. 187 records are new to the flora of the National Park rising the total number of its vascular plant taxa to c. 800. The principal vegetation patterns are briefly described and their distribution in the area is mapped.
