The Relationship Between Student Use of Campus Green Spaces and Perceptions of Quality of Life

HortTechnology, 2008

Researchers have found that students' perception of their overall academic experience and the campus environment is related to academic accomplishment. Additionally, studies have found that the designed environment of the university can influence the degree of stress students may feel. The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between undergraduate university student use of campus green spaces and their perceptions of quality of life at a university in Texas. A total of 2334 students or 10% of the undergraduate student body received e-mails with information regarding the incentive for participation and instructions on accessing an online survey. The survey included questions that related to student use of campus green spaces, overall quality of life statements, an instrument to measure the quality of life of university students, and demographic questions. A total of 373 surveys was collected and analyzed to compare levels of quality of life of universi...

Assessment of User’s Preferences of Campus Green Space at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad-Iran

2017

Researchers have found that a user’s perception of the campus environment is related to quality life and academic accomplishment. In this study, we have analyzed the perceptions of more than 600 users at the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad to evaluate the level of green space use and to understand user preferences from aesthetics and safety aspects. The results show that for most of the respondents (more than 80%), the use of green space was nearly 40%. The respondents’ aesthetics and safety preferences were more than moderate (65%) and nearly high (70%) respectively. A high correlation (nearly 80%) was found between their aesthetics and safety preferences. Based on the results, we recommend a thorough investigation of the effective factors and exploration of the reasons for the reduced campus green space use.

Assessment of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ): Students Well-Being in University Classroom with the Application of Landscaping

MATEC Web of Conferences, 2016

The environmental quality (IEQ) in a building is an important element to perceive the good health and comfort level for the building occupants. However, each building contributes different environmental quality results towards the indoor spaces and the occupants. Learning environment is one of the spaces that need attention as it is related to student's well being as well as their learning performance. Existing knowledge on IEQ is still limited concerning the desirable levels of air quality, maintenance, and other factors affecting IEQ in Malaysian educational establishment. Therefore, the study of indoor environment quality in buildings has been carried out in educational building as it acts as important place in learning process. The methodologies used to conduct this research are divided into two methods, which are classroom measurement normal condition and classroom intervention setting. This is done in order to compare and monitor the improvement of environment in the classroom. This research focuses on the comparison of IEQ in different classroom environment setting and the student satisfaction level in their normal classroom environment. Measurement of temperature (°C), relative humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2), Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), dust particles (PM10), lighting (lux), and noise (decibel) in the classroom were collected and questionnaires were distributed among the students. This research found that most of the elements in the classroom was incompliance with the standard threshold limit value. The level of VOC in the classroom was noted to be significantly high (11.7ppm) compared to the standard threshold limit. An intervention on the normal condition classroom was set up with selected plant placed in the classroom. Results show a tremendous reduction in the percentage of relative humidity, level of TVOC, as well as CO2.

Biophilia and Educational Satisfaction: Analyzing theperformative benefits of courtyards in university settings throughthe lenses of biophilic design

2019

This research aims to investigate the effect of campus courtyards on students' satisfaction with education. It will look into two different types of courtyard within the Arizona State University. One courtyard space has more elements and attributes of biophilic design and the other has less. In addition, this paper will provide guidelines for designing courtyards that would improve student's satisfaction with education. The Methodology used is survey handouts to students after the researcher selects the two types of courtyards by observation. The participant in this study are randomly picked young adult college students (n=60). The results indicate a positive effect of biophilic design on student's satisfaction with education in courtyards. Furthermore, guidelines for designing courtyards based on biophilic design elements and attributes are suggested.
