The Croatian national termbank Struna: a new platform for terminological work
Collegium antropologicum, 2013
The development of the Croatian Special Field Terminology program (known by its Croatian acronym Struna) began in 2007 as part of an initial coordination project launched at the initiative of the Croatian Standard Language Council, and has since been financed by the Croatian Science Foundation. It is being carried out at the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics, which serves as the national coordinator. This paper describes the current design of the e-Struna termbank and explains the adjustments made in the database structure and in the terminographic approach, both to support and reflect the methodological issues concerning interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary work. Based on examples taken from the Croatian anthropological terminology collection special attention is given to two frequently neglected categories of terminological description: context and note.
Croatian Anthropological Terminology ‐ Challenges and Dilemmas
This paper describes the project ANTRONA aimed at constructing basic anthropological terminology that covers the entire range of anthropology as a science. It is a part of national language planning oriented terminology management for the Croatian language, and as such it is focused solely at the production of a terminographic database. The major difficulties encountered during the procedural stages of the project are outlined, such as the wide range of the interdisciplinary field of anthropology, including concepts and terms from natural and social sciences and humanities, as well as polysemy and fuzzy boundaries between the lexicon of the general language and specialized language. On the basis of several examples, we argue that terminography should be dealt with primarily by keeping in mind the range of its subsequent applications the aim of which is not only ontological, but also communicative in nature, and that functional pragmatic approach offers a more flexible framework for dealing with the demands of terminology in such an interdisciplinary field.

Terminological standardization in the social sciences and humanitiesthe case of Croatian anthropological terminology The paper presents the construction of anthropological terminology in the Croatian language. It focuses, on one hand, on some specific challenges that Croatian, as a "non-dominant language", is facing in the process of developing and standardizing its scientific terminology. These challenges arise as a result of the small size of the Croatian scientific community and its limited influence on the development of particular disciplines, which means that concepts are frequently adopted from work by scholars writing in dominant languages, such as English. On the other hand, the paper addresses issues that necessarily arise when strict terminological standardization principles and ideals are applied to anthropology, as an interdisciplinary humanistic discipline using a wide array of often ambiguous terms which are difficult to fit into the rigorously organized conceptual system stipulated by traditional terminology.
Challenges of Croatian Linguistic Terminology
Collegium Antropologicum, 2022
The first part of the paper gives an overview of the Croatian Linguistic Terminology-Jena project stating its goals and achievements. The project is now (March 2023) in its last year. In the second part of the paper, plans and challenges of the project are discussed. Special attention is paid to the relation of linguistic terminology to anthropological (anthropolinguistic) terminology and the Jena project to the ANTRONA project, the first humanities and social sciences terminology project in the Struna program. The central part of the paper focuses on some of the most important issues and challenges (supported by examples) connected with the translation of Croatian onomastic terminology into English and vice versa.
Terminology Planning for the Croatian National Terminology Database STRUNA
The paper examines issues that have emerged during the development of the Croatian national terminology database Struna as the primary tool for the implementation of national terminology policy. Struna has been accessible over the Internet with a simple, searchable database (struna.ihjj.hr) since February 2012. The language and terminology situation in Croatia is discussed. The Croatian national terminology database Struna and a rather unique model of collaborative terminology work is described. This case study aims at helping other similar terminology projects benefit from our experience.
Digitization of older Croatian dictionaries: a possible substratum for terminological neologisms?
Libellarium: journal for the research of writing, books, and cultural heritage institutions, 2017
Considering that the present-day Croatian still frequently fails to have the exact translational equivalents for the novel ideas developed and disseminated via metalinguistic Eurospeak, the paper adopts and employs an unorthodox scientific method to refer to an articulated correlation between a conceptual framework theorized (i.e., the noninvasive library digitization projects pertaining to the select Croatian bi-and trilingual lexicography from the 17 th to the 20 th century) and the hypothetical questions addressed (i.e., their applicability to the coinage of Croatian neologisms that formationally imitate the previous paragons), with a pronounced tendency to signify a progressive replacement of the perplexingly anglicized language registers by the more decipherable formality levels. Consequently, such a succinct analysis results in a revalorization of the computerized conversion efforts and a permanent appraisal of the Croatian thesauri, which are neither antiquated nor obsolescent but may be incentively put into service for further similar studies in the subject matter.

Terminology and Terminological Activities in the Present-Day Slovakia
2018
The author of this paper aims to present current situation and problems of terminology monitoring and administration in Slovakia that lacks appropriate terminology discussion and terminography activities. In order to raise the awareness of the terminological issues, a centralised national term base was created intending to draw on the subcorpora of respective fields. The subcorpora not having been completed so far, terminology entries are to be filled in with available internet data. The author draws special attention to the key information of the terminology entry – definition, which, however, is not always to be found on the internet. Therefore, the team opted for the so-called defining context as a temporary substitute. The structure and content of both definition and defining context is to be analysed, which may serve for further semi-automatic retrieval in the specialised corpora. Slovak language has seen spontaneous and uncontrolled accumulation of terms for more than 17 years...
