Examining the Use of Proverbs in Teaching English as Second Language: An Implication for Secondary School Principals in Nigeria

This paper is a pure conceptual paper that examined the use of proverbs in teaching English as a second language in secondary schools and its implications for school principals in Nigeria. Proverbs play an important role in language teaching as a part of gaining cultural knowledge, metaphorical understanding and communicative competence. The paper carefully looked at the meaning and nature of proverbs. Forms of proverbs, grammatical structures and usefulness of proverbs were also explained. Interpretation of proverbs as well as the relationship between aspects of proverbs and English language learners’ classroom were carefully examined. Conclusively, it was concluded that proverbs is an important segment in English Language, and it is the art of every language as well as every culture. Proverbs have been used to spread knowledge, wisdom and truths about life from ancient times up to the present time. The study stressed the need for school principals to ensure that qualified teachers are recruited to teach English Language. Existing teachers should undergo periodic capacity building programs in order to avail themselves with the new ideas in English Language.

Introduction to Paremiology. A Comprehensive Guide to Proverb Studies

THE PLACE OF ORAL LITERATURE IN THE 21ST CENTURY: A PERSPECTIVE ON BASOTHO PROVERBS

This study examines contemporary Sesotho proverbs with an attempt at establishing whether they perform a significant role in society. The research highlighted the fact that they have a role to play in the 21st century. Although not commonly used as in the traditional setup, contemporary proverbs have their place as a day to day activity. In terms of language development they also add value to language change and providing alternatives in the world of challenges. Through interviews and the questionnaire, the research, indeed, showed that contemporary proverbs’ survival is guaranteed. Their survival in this modern world is of great importance in this research. The observation was that some of these contemporary proverbs are the same as traditional proverbs in many aspects which include their origin and structure. Some of the contemporary proverbs use or adopt familiar patterns to express new truths, thus reflecting on new events or aspects of the modern society. The possibility is that those that adopt the structure of the Sesotho traditional proverbs have all the chance of staying in the language. Some of these contemporary proverbs, however, survive on the premise that they are jokes created for fun by youth and other members of the creative section of the society.

DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED BY IRAQI EFL UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN THE SOCIO-PRAGMATIC INTERPRETATION OF POLITICAL PROVERBS

ABSTRACT Proverbs, a specific kind of linguistic forms, are a part of every language as well as every culture. They have been used to spread knowledge, wisdom and truths about life from ancient times up until now. They make communicating with language more effective in that they economize using language because such expressions represent certain codes which can be best interpreted within the context in which they are used. However, knowing the general meaning of proverbs would be insufficient to understand what they mean. Indeed, to know the meaning of a proverb in most cases relies heavily on the socio-pragmatic knowledge in addition to linguistic knowledge. In other words, to socio-pragmatically understand or interpret a proverb, it is necessary to know not only about the linguistic aspects of that proverb but also the cultural and social aspects in which it is used. Such knowledge seems to be an obstacle for Iraqi EFL university students when trying to understand or interpret proverbs while they communicate or use them in different occasions. Thus, it is hypothesized that Iraqi EFL university students misinterpret political proverbs and lack socio-pragmatic knowledge required for the interpretation of such proverbs. Moreover, Iraqi EFL university students also seem to lack semantic and syntactic knowledge. A test of both sides: recognition and production is constructed and administered to a sample of 50 fourth-year students, at the Department of English, College of Education/Ibn Rushd, University of Baghdad, during the second term of the academic year 2011-2012. The subjects′ responses are collected and analyzed to identify points of difficulty and misinterpretation. Results analysis of the responses is carried out to arrive at the main findings that: 1. The misinterpretation or difficulty students faced in interpreting political proverbs is attributed to the insufficient or lack of their socio-pragmatic knowledge of English language. 2. The pragmatic failure in interpreting these proverbs comes from their linguistic inability to match the given proverb to its social context. 3. One reason for this socio-pragmatic failure or misinterpretation is that students resort to L1 socio-pragmatic aspects to solve socio-pragmatic aspects of TL. On the basis of the above conclusions, some pedagogical implications and suggestions for further research are put forward.

This study described a study about an analysis of English and Indonesian idioms and proverbs. This research purposed to analyze the differences and similarities between English and Indonesian idioms and proverbs that used in daily life. Idiom is a set of word that have different meaning from the basic word. Proverb is a speech that can be used in everyday life for many situation that containing parable, comparison, and advice to that can apply as the way of life. The researcher used some research methodology such as research design, source of data, collecting data, data analysis and research instrument. The methodology of this study is library research. Based on researcher analysis English and Indonesian idioms and proverbs actually almost the same in meaning, but they have their own culture to deliver ideas about idioms and proverbs. It is misunderstanding among the people when they have to deliver the proverb in different culture and socities. So the writer concluded that there are similarities and differences between idioms and proverbs of English and Indonesian but it is depended on their culture. .
