An important development of the One Belt One Road Initiative (OBOR) is to promote qualitative improvements in trade and trade regulation among participating countries. This paper provides an analysis of bilateral trade between China and Kazakhstan, covering a period of time from 2002 to 2017 and divided into major trade categories. The main purpose of this work is to review the bilateral relations between Kazakhstan and China and determine the development of trade at the initial stage of the OBOR project. To solve this problem, two analyses were chosen and, the results of this analysis may show an increase in trade turnover in those product categories that were previously stated in the project. Firstly, in order to investigate the gap of intensity, and extensity bilateral trade positions used the Hummels-Klenow indices for export margins of trade. Secondary to assess the relationship at the intra-industry level used analysis of the intra-industry trade (IIT) activities developed by Grubel and Lloyd. The empirical analysis of the IIT index is represented as partially balanced. China's performance was analyzed as intensive in the main elected categories such as the increase in the export intensity of trade in large volumes in product categories. The development of the project is confirmed by a numerical increase in interest in the categories stated in the project earlier .
A New Perspective on China Trade Growth: Application of a New Index of Bilateral Trade Intensity
2010
This paper analyzes China’s trade relationships using a new trade intensity index, which incorporates gravity model estimation, to compare observed trade levels with levels would be expected to prevail given the economic, geographic, and cultural characteristics of the trading partners. The index is calculated to study China’s bilateral trade intensity, and uses Japan as a comparative case. Standard trade intensity index measures suggest China trades at a very intensive level with countries in East and Southeast Asia (ESA) and at a low level with countries in Europe (EU) and US-Canada (USC). The gravity model based index indicates that China’s level of trade with countries in the ESA region is consistent with levels that would be expected given the countries’ characteristics, while China’s level of trade with EU and USC are greater than one would expect given their characteristics. The new index also reveals insights regarding the evolution of China’s trade partners during the years...
Five Stylized Facts on Belt and Road Countries and Their Trade Patterns
China & World Economy
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) offers investment opportunities for several Eurasian countries but not all of them attract investments in the same way. This paper investigates the geographical distribution of BRI projects completed between 2013 and 2020. The analysis shows that pre‐existing trade patterns are related to the likelihood of a country receiving completed BRI projects. We single out and provide evidence in support of five stylized facts. First, BRI countries with completed projects tend to be poorer and larger. Second, projects are more likely to occur in countries with intense intermediate trade with China. Third, the countries that received projects have more diversified export structures and their sectoral specialization overlaps with that of China. Fourth, among middle‐high‐income countries, the allocation of projects tends to favor those with high levels of intra‐industry trade. Fifth, among BRI countries with projects, the complexity or sophistication of the goo...

This paper analyzes the impact of the Belt and Road Initiative on Europe with a specific focus on Italy. We concentrate on the impact of new railways and port infrastructures on bilateral trade. Our analysis suggests that the development of new railway connections will benefit most of the Northern and Central European countries. Some industries like automotive and electronics that have a higher value to weight ratio will benefit more than others. However, due to higher costs, railway services will never reach a high percentage of total import/export flows. Investment in new port facilities, although less “new” compared with railways, may be a bigger game changer. The development of the Port of Piraeus has already increased the importance of the Mediterranean Sea as an import/export hub for China. If the other planned investments in Egypt and Algeria are completed, this phenomenon will be magnified. This presents a huge challenge for Italy. The Italian port in the high Adriatic Sea c...
Influence of Belt & Road on consensual Trade with Path to Structural Trade Model
Winter 2023
Xi Jinping, the president of China, announced Belt and Road project. A large geographic area of the world, encompassing America, Asia, and Africa, was to be developed economically and through increased bilateral trade. BRI covers 64 per cent of the global population and 30 per cent of the international GDP. Analyses consequences of Belt and Road Initiative-driven changes to marine networks on bilateral trade movements (BRI). The gravity model approach was applied for results to study the significance of China through "Belt and Road project" (BRI) trade through various quantitative techniques, including (POLS), (FE), and applied to look at the hypothesized impact of bilateral trade of one Country with other countries. To study the importance of BRI on the two-way trade of China with 29 trading partners, panel data from 20 years (2000-2019) of data were obtained. China has a very good impact on international trade, and its GDP per capita is shown to be highly positive. The r...
Chinas trade intensity with South Asian countries
Journal of Economics and International Finance, 2018
The study seek to explore the extent and nature of trade and its growth over the period 2005 to 2013 between China and its five South Asian neighbours (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal). We measure the extent of trade by the trade intensity index and then check whether whole of this is explained by complementarity in the conventional sense. The study reveals that China's trade intensity increased with all south Asian countries, thus confirming its greater presence in real terms. This in spite of the fact that trade complementarities between china with these economies have experienced decline over the period. This confirms the strong presence of factors apart from traditional comparative advantage perspective that have increased trade intensity. However, china's import intensity with the region does not show a positive trend. As such china enjoys a trade surplus with these economies which in the long run may have many ramifications for these.

China is rapidly becoming one of the most significant trading partners of EU countries. This is as much the case for the 11 Central and Eastern European countries (CEE11) which entered the EU in 2004, 2007 and 2013 as for the older members. This paper sets out to examine data obtained from the Eurostat database concerning trade between the CEE11 and China between 2004 and 2014 in an attempt to clarify two main questions. Firstly, are there any differences between individual CEE countries’ trade with China during the last decade? Secondly, have the Visegrad (V4) countries (Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia) obtained any advantages over each other or over the other CEE11 countries? The Eurostat data, while limited in some aspects, suggest that all the eleven nations, despite variations, are struggling with trade balance deficits and therefore need to cooperate rather than compete concerning trade with China.
China and the international economy: a gravity model of the Belt and Road Innitiative
2019
The Belt and Road Initiative aims to increase China´s integration with the world economy through infrastructure projects and investment. We want to assess whether the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has contributed to increase Chinese trade with Sub-Saharan Africa. While the literature has covered the trade effects of the BRI, most of the studies try to measure the gains of trade derived from decreased transportation costs. While this remains as one of the most important features of the BRI, we wanted to measure how countries receiving BRI related investments trade with China. To achieve this goal, we built a Gravity model of trade for Chinese exports to 16 Sub-Saharan countries. If BRI investments are effective, China should trade more with these countries.
Europe between China and the United States: Geoeconomic Implications of the Belt and Road Initiative
European Research Studies Journal, 2020
Purpose: The research aims to examine the scope, nature and strength of the EU's relations with China and the United States, under new circumstances created by the development of the Belt and Road Initiative. Design/Methodology/Approach: In pursuance of the goals, three main research fields were identified. The first part of the research covers the EU-China relationship with special regard to the Belt and Road Initiative development. The second part concentrates on the transatlantic relationship under the specific terms of Sino-American competition. The third section is devoted to measuring the strength of economic ties between the EU with China and the U.S. The multidimensional analysis of the EU-China and the EU-U.S. bilateral cooperation is conducted within the framework of the geoeconomic theory. The main tool used in the first and second part of the research is a literature analysis whereas to reflect the strength of geoeconomic relations between the countries geoeconomic v...
