A Research on Urban Identity: Sample of Kadıköy District

Journal of Contemporary Urban Affairs

Cities have idiosyncratic identities composed of the combination of identity elements which are generated by the natural, social or built environments. Due to globalization, neo-liberal approaches and urban branding, cities have lost their unique identities to a significant extent; and resemblances among cities have gradually emerged. Therefore, some research questions occur such as which urban elements are the identity elements that form the unique identity; what are the problems that threaten the identity elements; and which identity features should be emphasized. The aim of this study is to analyze the unique identity and identity elements, and also determine the positive and negative identity features of an urban district. Central Kadıköy, located on the Asian side of Istanbul, was chosen as the experiment area and 117 questionnaires were conducted. The results have revealed that the most frequently defined unique identity element of Central Kadıköy is the Bull Statue; the second one is İskele Square and the third one is the Moda Coast. According to the focal points of this study, relation with nature is an important identity feature that needs to be emphasized; on the other hand, over-urbanization and deterioration of historical identity are the characteristics that should be prevented.

A Holistic Research Approach to Measuring Urban Identity: Findings from Kyrenia Area Study

As cities are losing place identity under the influence of industrialization, technological advancements and globalisation, a key task for mainstream politicians, urban planners/designers and residents is to understand what makes a city unique and recognizable. As urban identity is formed not only through identifiable and memorable formal attributes, but through the meaning attached by the users of the city, there is a need for a holistic approach integrating objective measures achieved through pre-analysis of the urban environment, and subjective measures achieved through user surveys. This study, based on such a holistic research framework, aims to measure the urban identity in Girne (Kyrenia), using survey data with a sampling of 250 participants, following a pre-analysis of the town. The results of the analysis indicated that although historic landmarks are so powerful in constructing the urban identity, traditional urban pattern and social life have not been found significant in constructing the images of the city unless they are frequented by local residents. On the other hand, the new housing developments lacking locally appropriate architectural and contextual qualities do not influence the urban image at all. Further, as the findings revealed that the perception of urban identity changes in time, there appears an opportunity to regain and/or enhance identity through various strategies. These include urban design strategies that depend so much on the specific context of a particular area, including all environmental dimensions defined in the paper.

Urban Environmental Aesthetic and Identity: The Case of Masouleh, Iran

Art-Sanat, 2022

Urban environmental aesthetics and place identity have begun to take their place on the design and planning agenda, especially in recent years. Urbanization resulting from competition between cities has caused the loss of identity and aesthetics in cities all over the world. The decreasing use of traditional building methods and planning, without consideration of the local context, by developers, authorities, and even administrators of cities has led cities to resemble each other. In light of these developments, the shape, form, texture, and especially identity and aesthetics of settlements become important in planning and urban design. While the concepts of aesthetics and urban identity are difficult to define, there are some parameters to evaluate them. This paper has two main objectives. The first is to determine parameters to evaluate aesthetics and urban identity. The second is to check these parameters over historical and touristic settlements. For this purpose, the concepts of aesthetics and spatial identity will be explained within the scope of the literature. The city of Masouleh in Iran has been chosen as an example of a historical and touristic settlement. The systematic development of the historical settlement, as well as the landscape, identity, and aesthetics of the environment's harmony and texture, were evaluated with a descriptive-analytical approach methodology based on the parameters revealed in the scope of the research. The findings aim to reveal the aesthetics and identity of historical residential areas. Including this information in scientific studies will lead to the design of more aesthetic settlements in the future.
