Exploring the Adaptation to Learning Styles: The Case of AdaptiveLesson Module for Moodle
Lecture Notes in Computer Science
Understanding learners and acknowledging diversities in their learning behavior is the key to design effective e-learning systems. This paper presents an innovative solution focused on adaptation to learning styles in the context of the learning management system Moodle. A new activity module named AdaptiveLesson has been developed as an extension of the Lesson module. It simplifies the interface for teachers who are creating lesson content while on the other hand provides students with individually adapted on-line courses in respect to their learning styles. Modifications in adaptive lessons with respect to regular lesson are described and the mechanism for adaptation to learning styles is presented. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed solution, a pilot evaluation of an on-line course developed by the AdaptiveLesson module has been conducted. The experiment is based on the comparison of an adaptive and an equivalent regular course. Results are discussed and guide...
A Module for Adaptive Course Configuration and Assessment in Moodle
Communications in Computer and Information Science, 2010
Personalization and Adaptation are among the main challenges in the field of e-learning, where currently just few Learning Management Systems, mostly experimental ones, support such features. In this work we present an architecture that allows moodle to interact with the Lecomps system, an adaptive learning system developed earlier by our research group, that has been working in a stand-alone modality so far. In particular, the Lecomps responsibilities are circumscribed to the sole production of personalized learning objects sequences and to the management of the student model, leaving to moodle all the rest of the activities for course delivery. The Lecomps system supports the "dynamic" adaptation of learning objects sequences, basing on the student model, i.e., learner's Cognitive State and Learning Style. Basically, this work integrates two main Lecomps tasks into moodle, to be directly managed by it: Authentication and Quizzes.
Research Trends for Implementing Adaptivity In E-learning Systems
The need of outcome based education has tremendously affected Learning Technology Market. The vendors of Learning Management Systems are looking the every possible alternatives and services required to meet the customer and learners requirements. Evolution of eLearning systems that are targeted towards implementation of adaptiveness in terms of personalized learning, learning contents, learning styles to ensure efficiency of learning is discussed in this article. Also different types of adaption in eLearning environment and independent eLearning systems which implemented the adaptivity at various levels are analyzed thoroughly on the parameters like learning style, mode of operation, learner's interaction as well various methods used for implementation are studied and we have tried to sum up the important researches that are helpful to improve and provide better services adaptable in eLearning systems. The proposed hybrid adaptive model for eLearning Systems will further add a n...
Towards a Generic Adaptive System applicable for Web-based Learning Management Environments
2005
One main objective of the AdeLE research project is the research and implementation of an enhanced, flexible and Web-based adaptive elearning system by the application of finegrained profiling and modeling information using multimodal sensor data in real time. Based on our knowledge about a wide range of existing learning management systems (LMS), we have decided to develop an approach to connect and control existing LMSs in order to extend them with adaptability or adaptivity. Backed on our experiences of the first fully functional implementation of the AdeLE system, we introduce our approach towards a generic adaptive system applicable for Web-based learning management environments in this paper.

While today's learning management systems (LMSs) provide lot of support for teachers to assist them in holding online courses, they typically do not consider students' individual differences in the composition and structure of courses. In this paper, we introduce a mechanism for extending LMSs' functionality to provide learners with courses that fit their individual learning styles, using adaptive sorting and adaptive annotation in order to highlight the learning objects (LOs) that support students' learning process the best. The mechanism enables teachers to add adaptivity to their already existing courses, using a flexible course structure in order to avoid limiting the richness of the learning resources and materials. Besides being flexible to teachers' needs, the adaptive mechanism aims at asking teachers for as little as possible additional effort when using it, requiring teachers only to choose the corresponding type of LO when creating an LO in the authoring tool of the LMS. *
Adaptivity in E-Learning Systems
2014 Eighth International Conference on Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems, 2014
Traditional e-learning systems have been, typically, designed for a generic learner, irrespective of individual knowledge, skills and learning styles. In contrast, adaptive elearning systems can enhance learning by taking into account different learner characteristics and by personalising learning material. Although a large number of systems incorporating learning style have been deployed, there is a lack of comprehensive, comparative evaluations. This paper attempts to bridge this gap by comparing a number of adaptive elearning systems. It considers three main perspectives: the learner model, the domain model and the adaptation model. A set of criteria is generated for each perspective, and applied to a representative sample of adaptive e-learning systems.
A Proposed Framework to Support Adaptivity In Online Learning Environment: Use Case In LMS
2016
Online Learning Environments (OLE) such as LMS, MOOC and ALS are becoming increasingly popular in many educational institutes like universities. However, LMSs and MOOCs provide the same content for all learners in a given course. Educational theory suggests that learners possess different proprieties such as background, preference, cognitive level and style of learning. This paper investigates an experiment of implanting the adaptation in these environments. The goal is to propose a model of adaptation taking into account several dimensions of adaptation. We will so examine these dimensions in the context of hybrid systems consisting of LMSs, MOOCs and ALSs.
Adaptive Courseware: A Literature Review
J. Univers. Comput. Sci., 2015
This paper gives a detailed description of how adaptivity is realized in e-learning systems, with a focus on adaptivity of courseware. The review aims to answer three basic questions on adaptive courseware: what has been adapted, how and why. Researchers have tried to adapt according to these different elements: student knowledge, behaviour, interests, preferences, learning style, cognitive style, goals, courseware presentation, navigation, annotation, sequencing and knowledge testing. An historical background of adaptivity is described: from word definition, through adaptive instructions and adaptive systems, all the way to adaptive courseware. The biggest challenge was to find the most prominent representatives of adaptive systems in courseware generation that were selected after an exhaustive search through relevant scientific paper databases. Each prevailing system is briefly described and the student features, to which the system adapts, are highlighted, together with the level...
Courseware Adaptation to Learning Styles and Knowledge Level
According to initial design of adaptive e-learning, content of an adaptive course should be suitable for students with different profiles (Brusilovsky, 1996). These profiles may contain information about goals, preferences, knowledge level, learning style, rendering psychological profile, and more. Typically, the learning content is developed for some groups of students that have similar values of one or several parameters of the student's profile.
Implementation of adaptive learning at higher education institutions by means of Moodle LMS
Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2021
E-learning courses have become popular means of delivering knowledge to students in higher education institutions. Most participants of learning process note that they benefit from the possibility to gain knowledge regardless of time, location and device they use. Among other advantages possibility to return to learnt material several times, divide material into parts, consume information through different types of educational materials (video, infographics, presentations, text, quizzes etc.) are mentioned. At the same time most of the surveyed students chose that they lack personalization both of materials and studying process, limited in terms of fulfillment and would like to have a choice of the level of study. The educational trend that is able to put into practice the above mentioned requirements is blended learning as it has a range of advantages such as usability, consideration of individual abilities, additional materials introduction, activities monitoring. Although it comb...
