Polish-English LSP Dictionaries in Translation Work: Labour-Law Terminology from the Polish Labour Code in Terminographic and Translation Practice

Language Culture Politics International Journal, 2021

The purpose of the article is to show the applicability of selected Polish-English LSP dictionaries in legal translation work. The paper analyses how well labour-law terminology, found in the Polish Labour Code, is covered in Polish-English LSP dictionaries and compares them to equivalents selected by Agnieszka Jamroży, the author of an English translation of the Polish Labour Code. Based on a collation of the English equivalents present in the reviewed resources, the author presents some conclusions as to what the studied dictionaries lack and what terminographers should focus on when compiling a labour-law dictionary that would be more useful to translators and other users. Essentially, the article presents the Polish labour-law language system and labour-law corpus, legal terms and labour law in the context of LSP dictionaries. The methodology is then outlined, followed by the findings from the review of the selected dictionaries and an example translation of the Polish Labour Co...

How Much Labour Law Terminology Is There in an EU Labour-Law Directive? Labour Law and Road Transport Specialized Vocabulary in Directive 2002/15/EC

2020

The paper discusses the terminology used in an EU document. It is part of a recently started research project on labour law terminology and terminography. Directive 2002/15/EC, the document selected for analysis, is an example of EU text dealing with two subject fields: labour law and road transport. Apart from that, it presents specialised vocabulary typical of EU documents. Analysing this directive enabled the author to compile a record of terms in the three fields: labour law, road transport law, and EU legislation, and then analyse them according to several classifications: the field of study, the type of concepts represented, and the length of terms (the number of words, a formal criterion). The proportions calculated made it possible to draw some conclusions as to the specialised vocabulary found in EU legal texts from the viewpoint of a translator and a terminologist, who need to be familiar with all the topics discussed in texts they are dealing with in a given job.

TermoPL — a Flexible Tool for Terminology Extraction

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the TermoPL tool created to extract terminology from domain corpora in Polish. The program extracts noun phrases, term candidates, with the help of a simple grammar that can be adapted for user's needs. It applies the C-value method to rank term candidates being either the longest identified nominal phrases or their nested subphrases. The method operates on simplified base forms in order to unify morphological variants of terms and to recognize their contexts. We support the recognition of nested terms by word connection strength which allows us to eliminate truncated phrases from the top part of the term list. The program has an option to convert simplified forms of phrases into correct phrases in the nominal case. TermoPL accepts as input morphologically annotated and disambiguated domain texts and creates a list of terms, the top part of which comprises domain terminology. It can also compare two candidate term lists using three different coefficients showing asymmetry of term occurrences in this data.

Problems of automatic processing and analysis of information from Polish legal texts

Kontrastive Untersuchungen rechtssprachlicher Termini am Beispiel des polnischen und deutschen Arbeitsrechts

Studia Linguistica Universitatis Iagellonicae Cracoviensis, 2013

A contrastive analysis of legal terminology based on Polish and German labour law The paper constitutes an attempt to apply methods used in linguistics and in terminology studies based on jurisprudence in order to compare specialist vocabulary from the field of Polish and German labour law. The presentation is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part. The theoretical part contains a brief description of the bilateral and unilateral methods used in contrastive linguistics, and subsequently presents methods of legal comparative studies applicable to terminology studies as well as relations observable between lexemes of general and specialist language. The empirical part discusses selected terms of Polish and German labour law which were a subject of a comparative analysis conducted with the help of the methods described in the theoretical part. The paper ends with a summary and conclusions stemming from the analysis.

Challenges of Terminology Extraction from Legal Spanish Corpora

2018

Untangling the complexities of legal documentation is an imperative need for non practitioners of the legal profession. The terminology used in the domain is complex and it usually requires expert knowledge to be fully understood, since the legal framework is constantly being updated and the meaning of terms vary accordingly. Non-proprietary Automatic Terminology Extraction (ATE) tools are required in this particular domain in which documents contain private and sensitive data. This paper describes methods for obtaining accurate legal terms from labour law corpora, overcoming the difficulties present in the area, and also analyses the peculiarities of the legal jargon, specifically, in Spanish language. The performed experiments, executed with JATE, a wellknown open source library in the ATE literature, are still preliminary, but promising.

Terminology Planning for the Croatian National Terminology Database STRUNA

This case study aims at helping other similar terminology projects benefit from our experience.

Calquing English Terminology into Polish

2013

Th is paper focuses on the question of calquing or loan translation. Basic tendencies in the fi eld of borrowing are presented, one of which is to preserve loanwords while the other one to form calques. Various defi nitions of calquing are included along with the common distinction between semantic and structural calques understood in terms of polysemy and creation of new linguistic entities. Problems with borrowing and calquing are indicated on the basis of traditional classifi cations. Th e discussion leads to a newer classifi cation which is derived from Carstensen and Busse (1994), i.e. one which leads to the distinction between calques and loan formations. Examples to indicate the accuracy of both categories are derived from computer terminology: both doublett es and various degree of translation. Th is part is based on a corpus study of text in Gazeta Wyborcza. Two tendencies are identifi ed in this respect: creation of families of new terms and formation of new terms in accordance with the principles followed in earlier terminology. Concurrently, other factors, which lie beyond the realm of contrastive linguistics, are pointed as the reasons for the existing diversity in terminology. Th ey are around the concept of sociolinguistic domains, in accordance with sett ing and participant framework. One of the reasons for not forming calques can be associated with the etymology of terms which inhibits this process.

Automatic identification of legal terms in czech law texts

2010

Law texts including constitution, acts, public notices and court judgements form a huge database of texts. As many texts from small domains, the used sublanguage is partially restricted and also different from general language (Czech). As a starting collection of data, the legal database Lexis containing approx. 50,000 Czech law documents has been chosen. Our attention is concentrated mostly on noun groups, which are the main candidates for law terms.
