Background: The liver is the major site of Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus replications. Patients with diabetes tend to be at an increased risk for developing various forms of liver diseases. The infection of the liver can cause or exacerbate diabetes. On the other hand, diabetes can cause or intensify the severity of liver infection. This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted with the aim to determine the prevalence of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C virus infections and associated factors among patients with diabetes visiting the University of Gondar referral teaching hospital, northwest Ethiopia. Results: Out of the 610 participants (305 patients with diabetes, 305 people with no diabetes) of the study, 65 (10.7%) were positive for Hepatitis infections, of whom 44 (14.4%) and 21 (6.9%) were positive for at least one of the viruses in patients with diabetes and people with no diabetes, respectively. Out of the diabetic and non-diabetic groups of the study, 26 (8.5%) and 14 (4.6%) (95% CI, 0.96-4.02) were positive for Hepatitis B virus, respectively, while 23 (7.5%) and 7 (2.3%) (95% CI, 1.46-8.68) of the diabetes and non-diabetic groups were positive for Hepatitis C virus, respectively. History of blood transfusion (95% CI, 1.36-12.71) and unprotected sex (95% CI, 1.25-10.15) were significantly associated with Hepatitis B virus infection, while the type of diabetes (95% CI, 1.25-10.89) was associated with anti-Hepatitis C virus positivity. Conclusion: Positivity for Hepatitis C virus was significantly associated with Type II diabetes. Blood transfusion and unprotected sex were risk factors for Hepatitis B virus infections. Further studies that elaborate temporal associations and find out explanations for the relationship between diabetes and Hepatitis C viral infections are of paramount importance.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Hepatitis C virus among patients with Diabetes mellitus and healthy control groups in North West Tigray. Blood samples from each study subject was tested for Hepatitis C virus by using anti Hepatitis C virus antibody rapid test kits and confirmed using enzyme linked immuno sorbent assy. Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infections are a global major public health threat. Their co-infections and associated risk factors have been postulated in many countries, unfortunately, no such data exist in Cameroon. This study aims to determine the prevalence and possible predictors of HCV among DM patients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among DM patients at Regional Hospital Bamenda from February to June 2020. Blood samples were collected and tested for the presence of HCV. The overall prevalence of HBV in Ethiopia varies from 4.7-16.8% for Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and 70-76.38% for at least one marker positive. Patients suffering from type I Diabetes Mellitus (DM) incur high risk of infection with hepatotropic viruses because of frequent hospitalization and blood tests. Methods: A comparative cross sectional study was conducted at Woldiya General Hospital using 108 consented study populations from Diabetes and 108 non diabetes control groups during the period November 2010 -January 2011. VISITECT HBsAg rapid test kit and Humastat 80 chemistry analyzer were used. Multivariate logistic regression was used to see the association of HBV with clinical history of participants and Sociodemographic variables. All tests were two-sided with ∝-level of 0.05 and 80% power. Results: Prevalence of HBsAg was equal between diabetic and non diabetic individuals, 3.7% indicating that there was no difference between the tw o groups. Only history of invasive procedures and chronic liver disease showed association with HBsAg seropositivity. Globally, infection of pregnant women by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) pose a significant health challenge for not just the mothers but also the newborn infant. This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of HIV, HCV, and HBV among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in Kogi State University Teaching Hospital (KSUTH), Anyigba, Nigeria. Sera samples obtained from 200 consented pregnant women were screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-HCV, and anti-HIV antibodies using commercially available immunoassay test kit. Demographic variables and obstetric characteristic were obtained using structured questionnaire. Of the 200 sera tested, the seroprevalence rates were 1.0%, 0.5%, and 8.5% for HBsAg, anti-HCV, and anti-HIV antibodies, respectively. Although 0.5% were coinfected with HIV/HCV, none was simultaneously infected by the three viruses. Age, marital status, trimester, and educational and occupational status did not significantly affect the prevalence of HIV, HCV, and HBV infections. However, factors such as history of abortion/miscarriage (p = 0.04), intravenous drug use (p = 0.001), and history of other sexually transmitted infection (p = 0.01) were significantly higher in relation to HIV seropositivity. In conclusion, findings from this study revealed high HIV seroprevalence and a clear decline of hepatitis C and B infection prevalence compared with previous epidemiological data. Reason for the latter could be attributed to the current efforts to reduce mother-to-child transmission and possible HBV vaccination programs. High burden of HIV infection in our study suggests the needs to strengthen the national prevention programs including education of the people on the risk factors of HIV transmission.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important public health problem worldwide. Its association with, and predisposing nature for diabetes mellitus (DM) has been long established. This research was carried out to determine the prevalence of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) amongst people with possible genetic predisposition to diabetes mellitus living in and around Vom, Plateau State, Nigeria. 188 subjects were screened after they filled a structured questionnaire to determine some of their demographic data, social habits and possible risk factors. 5 ml of blood was collected from each subject and sera separated out. Biotech's third generation ELISA Kit for HCV antibodies was used for the screening. Liver enzyme analysis was carried out on positive samples to determine their disease status. A prevalence of 14.36% was recorded with the highest seropositive group being those in the age bracket of 18 -37 years. 13(13.40%) of males and 14(15.38%) of females were sero-positive. Liver enzyme analysis of sero-positive subjects showed increased levels which may imply early onset of liver damage. These result showed that these individuals could later suffer diabetes which may be triggered by their HCV infection if not treated. This is not over-looking the economic significance of their ill health, assuming they progress to cirrhotic HCV or develop hepatocelluar carcinoma due to HCV chronicity.

It has been reported from several Caucasian studies that there is an epidemiological association between hepatitis c virus infection and diabetes mellitus. The objective of this study was to determine whether any such relationship exists in a black African population. To determine the prevalence of Hepatitis C virus infection in Nigerians with diabetes mellitus in NorthEastern Nigeria. Hospital-based cross-sectional study. Medical outpatient clinic and the Blood bank of the Federal Medical Centre, Yola. Nigeria. From June, 2008 to December 2009, Two hundred and eighty consecutively recruited diabetes mellitus patients comprising 108 males and 172 females were screened for HCV infection. These were compared with five hundred and ninetyfive voluntary blood donors who were screened during the same period. Serological testing for HCV infection was carried out with anti-HCV using Enzyme Linked Immuno-sorbent Assay (ELISA) method. The bio-data of the patients, history and duration of diabetes mellitus, history of jaundice, blood transfusion were recorded on a proforma. Out of the 280 diabetes mellitus patients tested, twenty-six were positive for anti-HCV antibodies giving an infection rate of 9.3% compared with fourteen subjects out of 595 voluntary blood donors 2.4% (p=0.0000105). History of blood transfusion, and jaundice was positively correlated with presence of HCV infection in diabetic patients. Hepatitis C virus is more common in Nigerian patients with diabetes mellitus than in non-diabetic control subjects. It may be necessary to screen patients with diabetes mellitus for hepatitis c virus infection particularly those with history of blood transfusion and jaundice.
