Modeling innovation: Determinants of innovativeness and the impact of innovation on firm performance

… of Innovation and …, 2008

The objective of this paper is to report on the method, analysis, and conclusions concerning two research questions formulated as: What are the determinants of innovation at firm level?" and "what is the impact of innovation on firm performance?" The results are based on an empirical study covering 184 manufacturing firms in the Northern Marmara region within Turkey. A comprehensive and integrated innovation model is presented composed of two sub-models proposed in line with the two research questions posed. Results and conclusions are presented.

Innovation and firm performance

Zeitschrift Fur Naturforschung Section C-a Journal of Biosciences - Z NATURFORSCH C, 2002

I Correla tion matrix 2 Literature review In this chapter, the literature on innovation and firm performance will be discussed. In section 2.1, two different research traditions are discussed; the economics-oriented tradition and the business-oriented tradition. In section 2.2, the changes in the economicsoriented research tradition are discussed. In this tradition, the innovation process itself becomes more and more the topic of research. This is studied by using firm-level data. Section 2.3 discusses the definitions and indicators that are used in the new approach. In section 2.4, the implications of the new approach for empirical research (models and estimation methods) are discussed. Finally, section 2.5 concludes this chapter.

An integrated innovation model: how innovations are born and what are their impacts on firm performance?

2008

The main objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive and integrated model of innovation at the firm level and to discuss the effects of firm characteristics on the innovativeness capabilities of companies. The results are based on an empirical survey covering 184 manufacturing firms in the Northern Marmara region within Turkey. In this study, first an integrated model of innovativeness is proposed. Later, the innovation determinants, especially firm characteristics, which have a significant role on innovation development success, are analyzed together with how innovativeness of firms influences their competitiveness and performance.

Effects of innovation types on firm performance

2009

Innovation is broadly seen as an essential component of competitiveness, embedded in the organizational structures, processes, products, and services within a firm. The objective of this paper is to explore the effects of the organizational, process, product, and marketing innovations on the different aspects of firm performance, including innovative, production, market, and financial performances, based on an empirical study covering 184 manufacturing firms in Turkey. A theoretical framework is empirically tested identifying the relationships amid innovations and firm performance through an integrated innovation-performance analysis. The results reveal the positive effects of innovations on firm performance in manufacturing industries.

Drivers to firm innovation and their effects on performance: an international comparison

International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal, 2013

This research aims to analyse the drivers to company innovation and their effects on the financial performance. This study is based upon a sample of companies, located in two neighbouring countries (Portugal and Spain). Linear regression was the methodology deployed to analyse the importance of innovation types (differences between Portugal and Spain). To analyse the extent to which the innovation capacity variables influence financial performance (turnover), we made recourse to Probit Regression models. Our results show significant differences in terms of both the drivers and inhibitors to innovation in these two countries. The introduction of products into new markets only proved significant at Spanish companies whilst innovations in both products and processes are significant in both sets of Iberian companies.

Innovation strategies and firm performance

2015

This paper analyzes the effect of various innovation strategies of firms on their future performance, captured by labour productivity. Using five waves of the Community Innovation Survey in Sweden, we have traced the innovative behaviour of firms over a decade, i.e. from 2002 to 2012. We distinguish between sixteen innovation strategies, which compose of Schumpeterian four types of innovations, i.e. process, product, marketing, and organizational (simple innovation strategies) plus various combinations of these four types (complex innovation strategies). The main findings indicate that those firms that choose and afford to have a complex innovation strategy are better off in terms of their future productivity in compare with both those firms that choose not to innovative (base group) and those firms that choose simple innovation strategies. Moreover, not all types of complex innovation strategies affect the future productivity significantly; rather, there are only few of them. This ...

Innovation determinants in manufacturing firms

2009

In this paper the findings of an empirical study concerning the innovation determinants in manufacturing firms is presented. The empirical study covers 184 manufacturing firms located in the Northern Marmara region of Turkey. The types of innovation considered here are product, process, marketing and organizational

Company Size Effect in Innovative Performance

Journal of technology management & innovation, 2009

The study presents the result of a research that had the objective of evaluate the influence of the size of the company in the practices of management of external sources of technological information and the correspondent impacts of these practices in the innovation performance of the enterprise.. The survey was carried based on data collected from a set of Brazilian industrial companies that are considered innovative The analysis of the relation between the management of external sources of technological information and the performance, according to the size of the companies disclosed that although being limited to a smal number there are some significant differences in aspects related to the access to technology and the types of external sources of technological information used by the firms. Some significant differences between small and larger firms on how these managerial practices affect the innovative performance were also detected

Internal Determinants of Firms’ Innovativeness

2019

This article presents an analysis of the determinants of a firm’s innovativeness deriving from its internal potential and characteristics. The analysis is based on research carried out on 1355 firms that applied for public subsidies from the Innovative Economy Operational Program in 2014. The methods applied are logit regression, comparative analysis and literature review. The analysis is structured according to Bielski’s model of an organization indicating the following subsystems: management, goals and values, people, technology and structure. This analysis shows that firms’ innovativeness depends mainly on the following factors: their level of cooperation with academia, longer presence on the market, being highly equipped with modern technologies, being a medium-sized or large firm, as well as being an industrial rather than a service firm. All of the organizational subsystems play a role in determining innovativeness, but the most important ones are the technical subsystem, psyc...

Types of Innovation and Firm Performance

2020

The paper brings together firm-level R&D spending information with patent information and aims to investigate the impact of different types of patented inventions on firm output growth performance controlling for R&D spending and other firm financials. We consider forwardlooking indicators of breakthrough and general innovation, and backward-looking indicators of originality and radicalness in innovation activities. Firm performance is estimated through a Cobb-Douglas production function. We allow for non-linearity in relationship between innovation strategy and firm performance and we investigate sectoral heterogeneity looking at the impact in health industries and ICT producers. Models are estimated using two-stage least squares and generalised method of moments to control for potential endogeneity of innovation indicators. Our findings confirm non-linearity and sectoral heterogeneity in relationship between the different types of innovation and firm performance. While ICT produce...
