The impact of non-intellectual variables on the academic success of business students

Marketing Education Review, 2005

The study investigated the impact of non-intellectual variables such as demographics, personality, and behavior as predictors of academic success for students who are early in their undergraduate career and students who are late in their undergraduate career. After controlling for intellect, non-intellectual variables explained between 16% and 23% of the variance in academic success of 269 business students. While student motivation was a significant predictor of academic success, behavioral variables such as time spent at work or time spent on studying did not show expected relationships with academic success. Implications for marketing education and direction for future research are also discussed.

FACTORS THAT EXPLAIN UNDERGRADUATE BUSINESS STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN THEIR CHOSEN FIELD. DOES GENDER MATTER?

Global Conference on Business and Finance Proceedings, 2020

The purpose of this study is to find out how undergraduate students perform in selected courses at a business school. Management and communication oriented courses require different skills to those of core business courses. There are many studies on students’ success in economics, accounting, and finance, but not in management and marketing. The data in this study are from a business school in Norway. Undergraduate business students can choose different pathways in their third year. We compare students’ performance in different selected majors. The methods chosen were the independent samples test and a linear regression model. It appears that the most notable indicator of success in the chosen major is performance in the introductory course within the same field. Mathematics is another important element, while grade point average (GPA) scores have a minor impact. There is obviously some gender effect. The males perform well in quantitative subjects, while women outperform men in marketing.

Determinants of Undergraduate Students' Academic Performance: The Case of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka

International Journal of Scientific and Research Publications, 2020

The primary objective of this study was to examine the factors affecting students' academic performance at undergraduate level. The research is conducted based on students of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura which is one of the state universities in Sri Lanka. The Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce is one of the largest faculties in the university system and enrolls about 5,000 internal undergraduate students. The sample consisted 191 graduate students who were completed their degree program in the year 2016 and 2015 (Academic year 2011/12 and 2010/11). Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted as main analytical methods. The result of the correlation analysis showed that there was a positive correlation of past academic performance, proficiency in English, lecture attendance and time spent outside the university on academic performance and negative correlation between internship period and academic performance. The multiple regression analysis concluded that past academic performance, English proficiency, lecture attendance and time spent outside the university are significant factors when evaluating the academic performance. The study analyzed hypothesis test in order to determine whether there is a significant difference exist between intern students' and non-intern students' academic performance. The independent sample T-test was used to test the hypothesis and result found that there is no significant difference exists between interns' and no-interns' academic performance. Study concluded that better understanding of factors affects the performance of students in any given course is must in the process of improving students' academic performance.

DYNAMICS AFFECTING THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS, ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND ACCOUNTANCY

Students' academic achievement characterizes performance outcomes that indicate the magnitude to which an individual has accomplished specific goals that were the emphasis of undertakings in instructional atmospheres. Institutional systems mostly define intellectual goals that either apply across multiple subject areas (e.g., critical thinking) or include the acquisition of knowledge and understanding in a specific intellectual domain (Steinmayr, R. et al). The respondents of the study are the Second Year students of the College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy who are currently enrolled with the different program offerings of the College. Since this study attempted to ascertain the dynamics affecting the academic performance of students, the descriptive correlational method of research was used (Fraenkel and Wallen 1993). The descriptive statistics was used to summarize the profile of the respondents like percentages, frequency counts and mean and in the analysis and interpretation of the perception of the student-respondents as regards to the different dynamics affecting the academic performance of the students, the weighted mean, the chi-square and Pearson r were used. A questionnaire was utilized to gather information from the respondents which consisted of two parts: Part 1 consisted of the profile of the respondents and Part II of the questionnaire proper consisted of the respondents' perception on student-related dynamics, school related dynamics, teacherrelated dynamics and home related dynamics. This modified data gathering tool was patterned from Addun, Jackielyn D. et al (Unpublished thesis, 2008). This undertaking positively identifies the factors that greatly influence students' performance and as teachers and administrators, being the key performers and facilitators of learning, it is therefore imperative for us to enhance our weakness and overcome these shortcomings in order to attain the long battle cry and quest for quality education and producing world class graduates.
