O. Karamalak, E. Pozhidaeva, O. Blinova (2022) Russian Students’ Perception of Online Foreign Language Learning during COVID-19 / Eurasian Journal of English Language and Literature, vol. 4(1), 1-19., 2022
The article discusses the results of the quantitative and qualitative survey on the online foreign language (FL) learning in Russian tertiary education during the pandemic that consisted of three parts: personal information, Likert scale and open questions. This anonymous survey includes the responses of 328 undergraduate and graduate students. It highlights main challenges students had to face studying FL online and their general thoughts and concerns connected with the issue. In general, the responses of the students of the Russian universities showed that the transition to online FL classes was a positive experience to them, since they confirmed that the quality of education and assessment seemed to be the same as well as the diversity, interaction and interest. Furthermore, they received more personalized feedback which means that their professors of FL adapted to the new situation quickly and managed to maintain the teaching process. Students seemed to appreciate the use of different platforms in class and for self-study. They mostly complained about the workload of written materials and insufficiency of speaking tasks. This study can contribute to similar research dedicated to experiences and opinions on online FL learning during the pandemic.
ONLINE LEARNING IN THE ENGLISH CLASS: A CASE STUDY OF SLOVAK AND ROMANIAN STUDENTS
2023
The coronavirus pandemic forced universities to move fully or partially online and use online platforms for teaching and learning. This study explores student reflections on online learning compared to face-to-face learning at the Romanian and Slovak universities. A quantitative analysis was conducted on 118 students. The study found that the majority of students expressed their satisfaction with online learning. They considered their online English courses well-structured and clear. Moreover, they perceived they could learn English more effectively online because the classes were more interactive and the online platforms provided plenty of opportunities to practice all skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Most of them appreciated their English online classes due to the variability of learning materials, methods and activities, the comfort, the novelty and attractivity, the support of learner's independence and of speaking confidence. Concerning face-to-face classes, they predominantly appreciated the efficiency, fewer distractions, better interaction and communication, fewer health issues caused by the sedentary lifestyle, more social contact, loss of technical issues, familiarity and better motivation.
Perspectives and Challenges of Online Language Learning: Slovak University Students' Viewpoints
International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning, 2022
Within the span of the past two years, modern technologies have induced major changes in education. It is primarily the Covid-19 pandemic that has altered the way of foreign language instruction. Therefore, this paper attempts to investigate the perceptions and attitudes of Slovak university EFL learners towards online English language learning. Altogether 188 participants completed a survey, indicating their level of agreement on a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire. The research results indicate that the students either agree or are neutral to the majority of statements involving their conditions for online learning and developing particular language skills and systems. However, it should be also emphasized that some challenges of online learning, such as visiting social networking sites or chatting with peers for non-academic purposes, were also detected to some degree. It is necessary to conduct further studies in this area so that the teaching and learning process is facilitated and ultimately becomes more effective.
International Journal of Research in E-learning, 2022
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significant disruption to education. To adapt to new conditions, academics immediately had to restructure their teaching programmes. Not all of them, however, had sufficient skills to be able to deliver effective online classes. Neither did the less qualified have enough time to increase their competencies by getting pre-emptive support coming from peers and technical staff, nor did they have an opportunity to self-direct their training. Yet, to achieve the best effect, to develop an e-learning environment in which they could deliver high-quality teaching that would meet various language needs of their students, they needed general and specific support mechanisms. The former relates to the technological aspect, that is the functionalities of available tools and the affordances they allow. The latter comes from the course structure, educational material, teachers and students. With strong support provided by certified peers, the English teachers at Gdansk University of Technology managed to engage their students in interactive, collaborative and active learning. The ideas shared in the paper are supported by qualitative and quantitative research conducted in 2020 and 2021.
