Optimization of Hybrid Reactive Distillation-Pervaporation System (original) (raw)
2011
Abstract
This work demonstrates the potential of hybrid reactive distillation-pervaporation (RDPV) system for enhancing chemical conversion and selectivity, reducing by-products formation and overcoming azeotropic limitations. The structural and parametric optimization of hybrid RD-PV system is studied and the superstructure problem is modeled and optimized using MINLP formulation. The application is illustrated by the synthesis of tert-amyl ethyl ether (TAEE) from ethanol and tert-amyl alcohol (TAA). The proposed hybrid system effectively removes the water from the system that results in increase in conversion of TAA and enhances the selectivity towards TAEE product. The hybrid RD-PV offers economically attractive alternatives due to simple process structure and better performance. The results were validated by independent simulation.
